Review of "Stumptown"

airs Wednesdays 10/9c on ABC
ABC really plastered the airwaves with ads for
this show before it started. It's really not my
favorite show, so I probably won't keep watching it.
The series is based on a comic book (which I've
never read). Coby Smulders ("Avengers") stars
as hard-drinking Dex Parios. She's an ex-marine with
PTSD. She starts working as a private eye to make
money because she has a mentally-challenge younger
brother to look after.
In some ways, the show reminds me of "Jessica
Jones," but that show is a lot better, and Krysten
Ritter is a lot more charming. Both women are
screwed up, drinkin a lot, have sex a lot, and are
PI's. Jessica has superpowers, though.
There have been many TV series in the past decade
about women who are really messed up and drink a
lot. Often, they're very unlikable, such as "Saving
Grace." If they're more likable, they can
still be terrible people (like Annalise Keating in
"How to Get Away With Murder." I just don't
think Dex is quite as good as any of these shows. I
found it a bit boring, and the heroine lacks
charisma.
