The Spy

Review of "The Spy" 9/10/19 by Suzanne
airs now on Netflix

Comedian/actor/writer Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Eli Cohen, a real spy that was part of the Mossad until he was executed by Syria in 1965. It's a good suspense thriller, and Sacha Baron Cohen does a great job (as do the other actors).  If you thought he was only capable of doing comedy like "Borat," you'd be wrong.

There are other familiar faces in the series, such as Noah Emmerich ("The Americans") and Alexander Siddig ("Gotham," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"). It's a good drama and worth watching.

SACHA BARON COHEN HAS BEEN CAST AS ELI COHEN IN THE SPY ON NETFLIX

Sacha Baron Cohen has been cast as Eli Cohen in the upcoming drama The Spy, a six episode limited series exploring Cohen’s role as a spy for Israel in Syria in the early 1960s. The limited series will debut globally on Netflix (outside of France), and on OCS in France.

Eli Cohen is one of the most legendary spies in the world. Cohen lived in Damascus undercover in the beginning of the '60s, spying for Israel. He managed to embed himself into Syrian high society and rise through the ranks of their politics. His actions, connections and immense sacrifice have had lasting consequences, shaping the Middle East of today.

Gideon Raff is writer and director. Légende Films and Alain Goldman are producing.

Cohen currently appears in Seth Rogen’s Hilarity for Charity, which launched globally on Netflix Friday, April 6.

THE SPY is inspired by the real-life story of former Mossad agent, Eli Cohen, who successfully goes undercover in Syria in the early 1960s. Cohen becomes close enough to ambitious military leaders and their rich friends to earn a game-changing level of trust about Syria’s biggest anti-Israel secret initiatives.

The series stars, Emmy-nominated Sacha Baron Cohen (Who is America?) as Eli Cohen, a man who wants nothing more than to be of service to his country, but he does his job so well that he finds it hard to strip off his double identity. Noah Emmerich (The Americans) plays Dan Peleg, Eli’s Mossad handler who tires to ease his own guilt over the sacrifices Eli makes, Hadar Ratzon Rotem (Homeland) portrays Eli’s wife, Nadia, who is left to raise their family on her own and knows something isn’t right about her husband’s government job, and Waleed Zuaiter (Colony) plays Amin Al-Hafz, a military officer who thinks he’s found the perfect ally in the undercover Cohen. THE SPY is written and directed by Emmy-winner Gideon Raff (Prisoners of War, Homeland and Tyrant) and Légende Films. The series is produced by Alain Goldman (La Vie en Rose). The limited series features 6x60-minute episodes.
