Review of "Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists" 3/15/19 by Suzanne
airs Wednesdays, 8/7c on Freeform

You don't have to have seen the original "Pretty Little Liars" to enjoy this show. They do make occasional references to the show, but you won't be lost. This is an entirely new show, with a few of the same characters in a new town.  The show's heroine is Alison (Sasha Pieterse), who arrives at Beacon Heights University as a new "teaching assistant."  I'm not really sure what that means in this case. Universities get their TA's from their graduate students. From what I can tell, she's not a graduate student. Although she's at a university, it seems more like a high school, in many ways. That is the only complaint I have about the series, though. It's an interesting show with a lot of mystery. Alison meets Mona (Janel Parrish), whom she knew in the previous series.  Mona seems a little crazy, talking to herself all the time (but we find out something different about her at the end of the first episode).  Mona tells Alison that this student, Taylor, killed herself a year ago.

Alison finds that some of her students are cheating. One of them ends up dead. The students and professors apparently all live there in houses supplied by the university (which is not very realistic), and there are cameras everywhere to spy on everyone. It's a very weird show, but I like it.  Like most suspense shows, "Things Are Not What They Seem."  If you liked PLL, you will no doubt enjoy this show. You may like this one even better.

Kelly Rutherford, who starred in the daytime soap "Generations" and has been in "Melrose Place" and other shows, plays the dead girl's mother. She also appears on the WGN show "Gone" as a mom.  Hayley Erin, who played Kiki on "General Hospital" and was previously Abby on "The Young & The Restless," plays Taylor. I don't recognize the rest of the actors, but they do great work on this show.
