Review of "Good
Trouble"

airs Tuesdays 8/7c on Freeform
This is a spin-off of "The Fosters," focusing on young women Callie and
Mariana. I didn't watch all episodes of "The Fosters," but it was much better
than this show. It involved a multi-generational cast in a family-oriented soap
opera.
This new show is about 20- and 30-somethings in L.A. It's nothing
like the other show, which is a shame. It's supposed to take place 5 years after
the end of the other show, but these two women neither look or act like anyone
who has gone through college, let alone law school and MIT. They act very
immaturely, as do most of the people in the show.
I didn't like most of
the premise. I'm from San Diego, and L.A. is not that far away (less than 2
hours), so there's no reason why these two would rent a cheap apartment sight
inseen. I mean, it's idiotic. No one would do that. Maybe if they moved to New
York City, that would be the case. It's very contrived to have them show up
there and find out that their place is a communal living area (does such a place
even exist?).
When each of these women goes to their new jobs, they act
like they're still in high school, rather than at a new job. They are insecure
and have trouble right away. I know they're former foster kids, but they had a
good foster family and went to college. One went to law school and passed the
bar, and the other one went to MIT. These things make you more confident. They
wouldn't act like scared schoolgirls. Particularly disgusting was how they had
Mariana go into a bathroom and cry because someone yelled at her. Come on!
They end up having all of their stuff stolen and live in a mouse-infested
crummy apartment. How did these two ever pay for college? Did they work? Did
they have no credit cards? It's really insulting to the audience to have such
unrealistic stories.
The only good part was at the very end, when Callie
confesses to Mariana that she slept with the guy she liked (who lives in their
building), and they see him having sex with another guy. Then Mariana says, "I
forgive you." That was funny, but it was also stupid. Again, they were acting
like teens, not like career women.
