Mexico City, August 2nd, 2017 - During the “Vive Netflix” event in Mexico City, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos announced a new original production set to film entirely in Mexico, Diablero, produced by Juan Gordon and Pedro Uriol of Morena Films. The executive producer and director for the series, J.M. Cravioto (El Chapo, Sr. Ávila, El Más Buscado) and director Rigoberto Castañeda (Paramédicos, Hasta que te Conocí, KM31) join a growing slate of Latin American original productions that Netflix has brought to audiences around the world.
With 50 new and returning original productions* emerging from Latin America through 2018, Netflix is investing in local voices who are expanding the range of stories being created. In turn, these truly Latin American stories are captivating members globally with dystopian thriller 3% from Brazil and the fast-paced political drama Ingobernable from Mexico generating unexpected fandom in countries like Korea, Italy, Turkey and Australia.
“Local creatives are breaking the paradigms of what storytelling has traditionally looked like in Latin America,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “As part of our expanded investment in the region, we’re looking for innovators who are excited about redefining the boundaries of Latin American entertainment, which makes the opportunity to push into an underserved format like stand up even more exciting. It’s also why a unique and high quality story like Diablero feels so compelling”.
Netflix’s continued investment in content and talent from Latin America also extends to stand-up comedy specials, with 21 new comedians from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil hitting Netflix throughout 2017 and 2018. These specials are in various stages of production featuring talent such as Natalia Valdebenito, Ricardo Quevedo, Sebastián Wainraich, as well as a new wave of sets from Sofía Niño de Rivera and Carlos Ballarta.
Netflix’s latest series out of Mexico, Diablero, is a horror fantasy thriller centered around Father Ramiro Ventura, a fallen priest who finds himself seeking the aid of legendary "diablero" or demon hunter Elvis Infante. With the aid of Nancy Gama, a modern day superhero, this improbable trio sets in motion a series of events that could determine the fate of mankind.
Diablero also has a comedic twist and it’s based on the book “El Diablo me obligó” by F.G. Haghenbeck. Alongside Cravioto and producing company Morena Films, the writers include Pablo Tebar, Veronica Marza, Gibrán Portela, Luis Gamboa and José Rodríguez. Netflix members everywhere can expect front row seats to this supernatural battle between demons and angels in 2018.
Along with the new stand-up specials, Diablero joins a larger slate of original productions being filmed in Latin America including Ingobernable, Club de Cuervos, La Casa de las Flores, Edha, Narcos, Samantha!, O Mecanismo, O Matador and 3%, among others.
*Total number refers to present and future projects, including branded licensed and original productions set to launch from now through 2018.
