Garner and Tennant

Review of "Camping" 3/7/18 by Suzanne
airs Sundays on HBO

I really wanted to like this because I love the stars, David Tennant and Jennifer Garner. However, they make her character so over-the-top annoying, that it's too hard to watch. It's supposed to be a comedy, but I don't find it funny.  Like a lot of comedies nowadays, it just has weird, excessively-quirky characters who are more grating than funny.

Garner plays Kathryn, a high-strung wife and mother who has organized a camping trip for her friends and family, to celebrate her husband Walt's (Tennant) 45th birthday. He's what they used to call "hen-pecked." He just lets his wife walk all over him.  Some of the people she invited don't show up, but one of them brings a guest that she can't stand (Juliette Lewis).  I can relate because I just couldn't stand to watch this series, despite David Tennant's role.

Jennifer Garner Leads New Series From Lena Dunham

Award-winning actor Jennifer Garner (Dallas Buyers Club, Alias, and the upcoming Love Simon) will make her return to television in Camping, a new limited series from Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner (Girls).

The half-hour comedy follows married couple Kathryn and Walt, who have planned a delightful weekend “back to nature” for Walt’s 45th birthday. But when the camping trip gathers Kathryn’s meek sister, holier-than-thou ex-best friend, and a free-spirited tagalong in one place, it becomes a weekend of tested marriages and woman-on-woman crime that won’t soon be forgotten.

Garner will star as Kathryn, a controlling L.A. mom who is far less cheerful than her Lululemons imply. Kathryn commands the proceedings with an iron grip until she’s faced with a woman who undoes all her best-laid plans.

Konner and Dunham, will serve as writers, executive producers and showrunners of the series. “We love Jennifer’s restraint and comedic timing, and we can’t wait for the warmth and intelligence she’ll bring to our central character, Kathryn,” said the pair. “It’s truly a dream to have her first on our call sheet. Now we just have to write her some stunts.”

The show is based on the British series of the same name, created by Julia Davis and produced by Baby Cow Productions.

Konnor and Dunham’s production team, A Casual Romance, will be joined by Davis as an executive producer for Hush Ho; Christine Langan as an executive producer for Baby Cow Productions; Ilene S. Landress is also an executive producer.
