Sheperd and Bell

Review of "Bless This Mess" 4/17/19 by Eva Diaz
airs Tuesdays, 9:30/8:30pm

I like to watch new comedies, and I was excited to watch "Bless this Mess," judging from the comercials I saw. It still needs a bit of work, but I hope it gets better in future episodes. The show stars Dax Sheperd as Mike and Lake Bell (also the co-creator for the show) as Rio. The two play a newly-wed couple who leave their jobs in the city for a quieter life on a Nebraska farm (which was left to Mike by his deceased aunt). The couple has never worked on a farm in their lives, but they're eager to learn and to grow their own food. When they arrive on the farm, they discover that the house and farm are in need of major repairs. Despite being afraid that they're in over their heads, they decide to stay and make the farm work.

I enjoyed Lake Bell, even though I've never seen her in anything before. Her comedic style reminds me of Kirstie Allie (and she looks a little like her, too). Dax Shepard and Lake Bell have great chemistry and are great as a couple. Ed Begley, Jr., is also great as next door neighbor Rudy, who is an old friend of Mike's aunt.

The problem I had with the show is that the physical comedy is predictable. For instance, when they walked inside the house, I knew they were going to fall through the floor. I also knew that when Rio was being chased by the cow, she was going to climb on the roof to get away. There are a lot of scenes like that in the episode I saw, but the end also gave me a warm fuzzy moment when the townspeople came to get Rio and Mike off the roof. The show also reminds me of Green Acres, which I'm sure you can probably watch episodes of on Youtube or your favorite straming service. The show has a litle work to do, but I will continue to watch, hoping it works out its minor problems. I give this show a 4 out of Five stars because it is worth watching.
