I like time travel shows, and I loved the original "Time
After Time" movie with Malcolm McDowell, David Warner and
Mary Steenbergen. This show is not as good as that movie.
It's your typical broadcast TV show, dumbed down for the
masses. It's light and airy, and you won't think about it
two minutes after you see it. There are many good time
travel shows on TV right now. This isn't one of them.
I like the actors who play H.G. Wells and Jack the
Ripper, but they're a bit lightweight for this type of
drama. Freddie Stroma was great in "Unreal," but he's not
solid enough to be the lead of this show. He just comes over
as too silly. Josh Bowman (Daniel from "Revenge") is better
as Stevenson (Jack the Ripper), but the writing just doesn't
support them. Genesis Rodriguez is fine as Jane.
I'll
give you an example of the bad writing: In one scene, H.G.,
after taking a shower, has trouble using the electric razor
(he can build a time machine but can't figure out a razor?
Okay...). Jane shaves him. That's fine, but then she shaves
off his mustache without checking to see if that's okay. He
just sits there as if nothing is going on. What??? I found
that scene to be ridiculous. You try shaving off a man's
mustache without asking him and see what happens!
The show was created by Kevin Williamson, who created
Dawson's Creek, Vampire Diaries and other shows. I'm
surprised that something he did is so flawed.
MORE INFORMATION:
Travel through centuries,
decades and days with a
young H.G. Wells in the time
machine he created. Using
creative elements from many
of Wells's classic stories,
Time After Time
creates a fantasy world
surrounding the events that
inspired these great
literary works. We look at
the world of today through
the eyes of yesterday while
fully charged with danger
and centered in thrills,
satire, humor - and most of
all - an epic love story.
