Luke Cage

"Luke Cage" review by Eva Diaz  10/13/16
Airs now on Netflix

I enjoy shows about superheroes, so I looked forward to this one because it's yet another superhero I hadn't seen before.  I'm grateful to Netflix for making so many interesting shows about superheroes. Luke Cage is a fugitive from prison and a reluctant hero.  He's out to avenge the death of his girlfriend, Reva, but when he sees the people of Harlem being abused or killed, he decides to use his superpowers to help them. Viewers of the show don't find out what Luke's superpower is until the last 4 minutes of the show (although, comic book readers, or anyone who watched last year's "Jessica Jones" series, will already know).

Luke Cage is very strong and indestructable; he can bend guns, and bullets bounce of his trademark black hoodie. The show is fun to watch, and I enjoy the shows star, Mike Colter, as Luke Cage. However, I have to say that it tends to move slowly; it needs to be more fast-paced because at times it makes you impatient and wondering when it will end. The show has great music from the people who sing at the club where Luke works, but I wish it would focus more on the characters. The show has some memorable dialogue, but the writing needs to be better for with the wonderful cast that includes Alfrie Woodard as Mariah Dillard, a corrupt politician who pretends to want to save Harlem. I think this show could make it to a second season, based on the strength of its cast. I just hope the writing gets better for the second season. I give this show a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
