I Love Dick

Review of "I Love Dick" 5/25/17 by Suzanne
Airs on Amazon now

This is a very good show. It's a comedy-drama about some weird artist people in a small Texas town. Based on a book, the show is about a middle-aged married couple who are falling apart. The wife, Chris (Kathryn Hahn) has been making films, and the husband Sylvere (Griffin Dunne) is a writer. They journey to Marfa, Texas, so that Sylvere can join the artists' gathering of this artist named Dick (Kevin Bacon).  The show is told largely from Chris point of view as a feminist artist. It has many funny but also moving scenes.

I wasn't sure if I would like it at first, but it's very compelling.  The characters are very real, even though they do surprise you a lot in how they act.   They're all very messed-up people. After experiencing a huge disappointment with her latest film, Chris develops an obsession with Dick, which she turns into her art.  She and her husband also use this to spice up their sex life. There's a lot of sex in this show, but it does serve a purpose. A lot of the show is about female sexual expression.

If you're an adult, you will want to check this out. It's only 8 half hour episodes, but it's really worth watching. Make sure the kids aren't around when you watch it. I look forward to season 2.

They also play many wonderful songs, mostly sung by women.

MORE INFORMATION:

Adapted from the lauded feminist novel, I LOVE DICK is set in a colorful academic community in Marfa, Texas. It tells the story of a struggling married couple, Chris and Sylvere, and their obsession with a charismatic professor named Dick. Told in Rashomon-style shifts of POV, I LOVE DICK charts the unraveling of a marriage, the awakening of an artist and the deification of a reluctant messiah.
