Nan and Martin

Review of "Downward Dog" 5/27/17 by Suzanne
Airs on Tuesdays, 8/7c on ABC

This is a cute show with good acting. Allison Tolman ("Fargo") plays a young woman, Nan, who works at an advertising agency.  She has a terrible boss who's an idiot, and she just broke up with her boyfriend.  The show is mostly from the point of view of her dog, Martin.  Martin is adorable. Unfortunately, "cute" does not really make a great sitcom. It should be funny as well, and it's really not very funny at all.

Also, the voice they use for Martin is very annoying.  The actor sounds like he's doing a bad Christopher Walken impression. He also says "you know" way too often.  It gets old very quickly.  If you're going to watch the show, turn down the sound. The dog is more fun to watch that way.

TV should stop trying to make shows out of web series. They almost never work.

MORE INFORMATION:

Based on a web series, Downward Dog follows the day-to-day life of Nan (Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Allison Tolman, Fargo), as told by her increasingly lonely and philosophical dog, Martin (voiced by Samm Hodges). Just one session at obedience school makes them realize that even at their worst, they may be the best thing for each other.

Nan attempts to juggle her tumultuous personal life with a stressful career, unjustly supervised by her self-obsessed boss. Having her story told from the canine perspective provides a uniquely unfiltered point of view that helps us laugh and cry about what it means to be a human being in the twenty-first century. It's a show about a dog and the girl he adores, and even at their worst, Nan and Martin just might be best for one another.

Downward Dog stars Allison Tolman as Nan, Lucas Neff (Raising Hope) as Jason, Nan's ex-boyfriend; Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Love) as Jenn, Nan's best friend and co-worker; and Barry Rothbart (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Kevin, Nan's boss.
