Candy Crush

"Candy Crush" review by Eva Diaz  7/10/17
Airs Sundays 9/8c on CBS

I have never played Candy Crush, but since I love game shows, I thought I would watch it, just to see how they would turn the hit game into a game show for television. The way they do this is: they have giant television walls where the game is projected, and contestants (in this case former contestants from "Survivor" and "Big Brother") play the game.  Later on, the teams that are leading, physically get on the game board screens. The team that makes the most money wins $100,000. Mario Lopez (known from "Extra") takes his first turn as game show host and does a great job at it.

The problem is that the game show is missing the participation element from the audience at home, watching on TV - that is what makes a hit TV game show. The home audience has to be able to play along with the contestants somehow, so that they will also want to root for the contestants on the television. "Candy Crush," in my opinion, doesn't have that element.  You basically just watch people play the game, which is boring. The audience in the studio is also shouting at the contestants about what Candy matches they should make, and that is distracting to the contestants, who can't talk to each other because they can't hear over the loud audience. As a viewer, I also found it annoying.

I hope that in future shows they use regular people as contestants rather then reality stars or stars from the CBS shows. If this show can fix these problems, it may have a shot at competing against ABC's Sunday Summer Fun and Games line-up - which is its direct competition, since Candy Crush is also on Sunday night. Still, CBS gets points for having an innovative new show, rather than just bringing back an old show from the past, like ABC has done so many times.  I give this show 3 out of 5 stars.
