Bones Final Chapter

"Bones" review by Suzanne 12/31/16
Season 12 premieres Tuesday, Jan. 3 on FOX

I've always loved this show, and I'm sad that it's ending. I guess 12 seasons is "enough" and many fans stopped watching in past seasons. From what I can tell, there are only 12 episodes this season, which is not enough. However, I'm glad they get a chance to end things right.

I will really miss it, just like I also miss "The Mentalist" and "Castle," two similar shows that I also loved. Yet Bones was the first before those others (it began in 2005), and it's also outlasted those other two shows. It also disproved the idea that once a TV couple gets married that it becomes no longer interesting. I've never believed that, myself, but I know a lot of people do. They made it work on "Bones," not only with the leads, Seeley (David Boreanaz) and Temperance (Emily Deschanel), but with the second leads, Jack and Angela. Not only have they all been married for a while, but they've had kids, and survived many challenges.

The stories on "Bones" are usually pretty solid, but it's really the characters and their interactions that are the best things about it. Throughout the 12 years, they've all grown, just like real people.  We've watched Seeley become more rational and calm, more at ease with the scientific world and less of a screwed-up human being (he was beaten as a child, and also went to war, so he had a lot of issues).  We've watched Temperance become a little less full of herself, a little less nerdy and a little more familiar with pop culture as well as more secure as a wife and mother.

I only started watching this show because I loved Boreanaz so much in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," but I was delighted to fall in love with him as Seeley, and with the rest of the show.  Also, the cast (especially Boreanaz and Deschanel) has always been really good about meeting with me and other website writers online for conference call interviews, which we really appreciate. For years, it seemed like the show was always in danger of being canceled, until it became a sort of sleeper hit for a while.

I was honored to watch the first three episodes of this season! No real spoilers here.

Temperance and Zack in the premiere

"The Hope in the Horror"

In last season's finale, Temperance was kidnapped by former lab assistant Zack Addy (Eric Millegan), who's been in a mental institution for years after confessing to a murder. The premiere episode this year does show what happened and why Zack kidnapped her. Frankly, I found the whole episode and the answer to the cliffhanger to be a bit of a letdown, but there are some good moments, and it propels stories into the rest of the season. Throughout all of the episodes, Cam and Arastoo plan their wedding. I really hope that they get Hodgins out of the wheelchair, but it's not looking too good at this point.

"The Brain in the Bot"

The second episode is light and fun.  A guy who's developing robots is murdered. There's some really fun stuff with Temperace and her dad, as well as the others. Also, there is a little hint about her dad that I wasn't too thrilled to see.

"The New Tricks in the Old Dogs"

The third episode is even more fun. It stars some legendary TV actors, such as Hal Holbrook and Ed Asner. A man who was living in a retirement home is murdered. The team all talk about whether to have more children or not. I hope you enjoy these episodes as much as I did!

SEASON OVERVIEW

BONES, the long-running comedic procedural beloved by millions of fans around the world, will return for a final farewell 12th season on FOX.

When the standard methods of identifying a body are useless, law enforcement calls on DR. TEMPERANCE BRENNAN (Emily Deschanel), a highly skilled forensic anthropologist employed by the Jeffersonian Institute in Washington, D.C., who writes novels on the side, for her uncanny ability to read clues left behind in the victim’s bones. While most people can’t handle Brennan’s intelligence and her drive for the truth, FBI SPECIAL AGENT SEELEY BOOTH (David Boreanaz) is an exception. A former Army sniper, he mistrusts science and scientists – the “squints,” as he calls them – who pore over the physical evidence of a crime. But even he cannot deny that the combination of his people-smarts and Brennan’s scientific acumen makes them a formidable duo, both professionally and personally.

Over the course of the series, Brennan has devoted herself to her career, to Booth, with whom she has two children, and to her team at the Jeffersonian. They include best friend ANGELA MONTENEGRO (Michaela Conlin), an artist who specializes in reconstructing facial features and crime scenes; Angela’s husband, DR. JACK HODGINS (TJ Thyne), a conspiracy theorist and expert on insects, spores and minerals, who is affectionately known as “the slime and bug guy”; DR. CAMILLE “CAM” SAROYAN (Tamara Taylor), the street-smart and centered coroner; and Booth’s most recent colleague at the FBI, SPECIAL AGENT JAMES AUBREY (John Boyd), a young, intrepid agent with a voracious appetite for solving crime, junk food and career advancement.

The final season’s 12-episode run will celebrate the inventive series and bring the storylines of Brennan, Booth and the Jeffersonian-FBI team to a close, allowing the show’s loyal fans to say goodbye to these indelible characters. Over the course of the farewell season, fans will experience deaths, a wedding, epic serial killer storylines and an undercover episode.
