Review of "American Gods" 5/27/17 by Suzanne
Airs Sundays, 9pm eastern time on Starz

I don't generally like shows on Starz because they tend to be very violent. This show, however, is very good and you can easily look away when it gets too bad. It's based on a book by Neal Gaiman, which I haven't read.  Some of the series is slow, but it's not unbearable to watch.  It gets better as it goes along.

It's about some supernatural beings that call themselves Gods. They came to America a long time ago and find that people don't worship them as they used to. Now they're being replaced by some newer Gods. They're all preparing for war. You don't learn all this at first. We see most of the action from the point of view of a young man in prison named Shadow Moon. When he's about to get out, he learns that his beloved wife is dead. He's approached by a strange older man (Ian McShane, who's always great) who offers him a job. He gets sucked into the Gods' world and their politics.

The show has a fantastic cast, including Gillian Anderson, Beth Grant, Cloris Leachman, and many more.  Bryan Fuller and Michael Green co-write and run the show.  "American Gods" seems very strange, but you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. Don't miss it!

MORE INFORMATION:

When Shadow Moon is released from prison, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday and a storm begins to brew. Little does Shadow know, this storm will change the course of his entire life. Left adrift by the recent, tragic death of his wife, and suddenly hired as Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard, Shadow finds himself in the center of a world that he struggles to understand. It’s a hidden world where magic is real, where the Old Gods fear both irrelevance and the growing power of the New Gods, like Technology and Media. Mr. Wednesday seeks to build a coalition of Old Gods to defend their existence in this new America, and reclaim some of the influence that they’ve lost. As Shadow travels across the country with Mr. Wednesday, he struggles to accept this new reality, and his place in it.

Starz announced today it has picked up a second season of its deity-driven, critically-acclaimed original series "American Gods," produced by FremantleMedia North America (FMNA), following its premiere on STARZ on April 30, which has garnered more than 5 million multiplatform viewers to-date and growing.* Adapted from the award-winning novel, "American Gods" posits a different kind of war brewing - one between Old Gods and New. The traditional Old Gods, with mythological roots from around the world, fear irrelevance as their believers die off or are seduced by the money, technology, and celebrity offered by the New Gods. Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) is an ex-con who, left adrift by the recent death of his wife, becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to conman Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). But in truth, Mr. Wednesday is a powerful old deity, on a cross-country mission to build an army and reclaim his lost glory.
