"Underground" review by Suzanne

Airs Wednesdays 10/9c on WGNA
This is a really great show. It's
tempting to say it's like an updated version of "Roots" but
with much more interesting characters and better writing.
It's all about some slaves using the underground railroad in
an area near Atlanta.
There are many characters to keep track
of, but it's not that difficult. Aldis Hodge ("Leverage")
stars as one of the slaves, a blacksmith named Noah who's
planning to escape to the "promised land" with other slaves.
He's very smart but secretive. Jurnee Smollett-Bell plays
Rosalee, another slave whose whole family works at the
plantation. She and Noah start up a friendship. Christopher
Meloni ("Law & Order: Special Victims Unit") plays a local
man, August, with an ailing wife, a young son, and some big
secrets. Alano Miller plays Cato, a slave who seems loyal to
the master, so the other slaves despise him. Marc Blucas
("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") plays John Hawkes, a Northern
abolitionist lawyer. His wife, Elizabeth (Jessica de Gouw),
is a little weird and very sensitive to the fact that she
hasn't had any children. They move down to the South to stay
with John's brother, plantation owner Tom, who wants to run
for Governor. There are many other great characters, but you
get the idea. It's a complex drama with many characters.
The writing from Misha Green (who worked
on "Sons of Anarchy" and "Spartacus") is pretty tight, and
as the characters are introduced, the story is carefully
woven. It's a riveting story from the very first ten
minutes. I'm really enjoying it and plan to keep watching. I
don't have much time to add new shows, but this one is going
to my list because that's how good it is. John Legend
is one of the executive producers. You don't want to miss
this one!
