I have never seen the
movie on which this show is based, so my review is based on
the first episode of the show, which began airing on Netflix
on Friday, July 31st. It has a great cast of actors,
including Amy Pohler, David Hyde Pierce ,and Jon Hamm. The
series is a prequel to the original movie, which had no box
office success but has gained a cult following of fans. The
show is a parody of the movie "Meatballs," which dealt with
campers (some from a rich camp, and some from a poor camp)
who later had a competition to see which was the better
camp. "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp" does a
good job with the parody. Personally, though, it isn't my
type of show. If you are a fan of the "Brady Bunch" parody
movies, I think you will like this show because it is done
in that same style. If you have never seen this show, then
I suggest you watch the movie "Meatballs" first, in order to
understand the jokes.
It has a great cast of wonderful actors, but this show is an
acquired taste. I really don't think it will attract
too many new viewers, other then its fan base, so it might
not last too long on Netflix. I do have to say, though,
that it is a fun show to watch if you just want to
decompress and watch something that doesn't require you to
think too much. I give this show 3 out of five stars, just
for the great cast. It's wonderful to watch them work
together.
