The Good Witch

"Good Witch" review by Eva Diaz 3/3/15
Airs Saturdays 8/7c on Hallmark

I was not that excited to watch this series because I had seen some of the movies. They were okay, but only something I watched when I was bored and had nothing else to watch. I had not planned on watching the new series at all until I heard that James Denton was going to star in it. I had watched Denton on "Desperate Housewives" in his role of Mike the plumner (who had a hidden secret). Mike was my favorite character on that show, so since I like him as an actor, I thought I would give the show a shot. The movies were good family movies, but to me they were boring because they didn't have much of a plot. Cassie Nightingale (Catherine Bell) fell in love with local Police Chief Jake Russell (Chris Potter).  They got married, and Cassie helped him raise his two kids.  Eventually, they had a child of their own.

Each movie consisted of Cassie helping the people of the town of Middleton, using herbs and potions that she sold in her shop. Cassie's husband Jake and his kids were the only ones who knew that she was a witch. When the series opens, Sam Radford (Denton) and his son Nick move into the house next door to Cassie and her family. Sam is the new doctor of Mifdleton and is a divorced single dad. Cassie's husband has died in the line of duty, and the town misses him very much. Sam can't get any patients to come see him when they are sick because the town doesn't trust doctors.  Instead, they trust Cassie. Dr. Sam doesn't believe in alternative medicine and that makes sparks fly between Cassie and Sam.

I like the show.  It's not wrapped up as neat and tidy as the movies were, and things don't always end happily.  If the writers can keep the show dealing with real problems and still keep true to the characters from the original Hallmark movies, I think that they will have another hit series on their hands. If you are looking for a show the whole family can watch, you can't go wrong with "Good Witch." I give the show 4 out of 5 stars, hoping that the writing of the show will improve a bit and not always give us the neat and tidy happy ending.
