Fresh of the Boat is a comedy based on the memoir of
Eddie Haung and what he experienced when he and his
family moved from Washington DC to Orlando, Florida in
the 1990’s. I wanted to like this show because I thought
it would be different than other sitcoms, but my test
for any comedy is: "Does it make me laugh?" I watched
two episodes of the show when it premiered on ABC, and I
am sad to say that neither of the episodes made me laugh
at all because I knew what jokes were coming. The
writing is too predictable. It’s the standard
fish-out-of-water story of an Asian family trying to
adjust to living in a predominately white community, and
trying to adjust to a culture they are not used, to
while the children want to fit in at school, and still
please their parents by keeping some of their Asian
culture.
The show has the the typical warm fuzzy moments in it at
the end of each episode as the family slowly adjusts to
their new life and struggle to make a profit from their
new restaurant. I'm going to keep watching the show to
see if the writing gets any better; the show has
potential, but they need to improve the jokes. I will
give this show a chance to grow on me. I give it 3 out
of 5 stars. The show airs on ABC Tuesdays at 8 PM
Eastern 7 PM Central time
