Somewhere, some critic has been throwing around the phrase,
“Sex and the City for men,” when talking about the CBS show
We Are Men, but I think that is a bit of stretch. SATC
offered us a look at four women we haven’t seen before,
offering an interesting and fresh look at the female
character on TV. We Are Men doesn’t quite get there. The
show centers on the lives of four, newly-single men all
living in the same apartment building, played by (in no
particular order) Tony Shaloub, Jerry O’Connell, Kal Pen,
and Chris Smith. While there is nothing too exciting or new
about this show, and the humor relies on us accepting the
stereotypes and clichés it is peddling as fresh observation
and intuition, it has charm and the characters are likeable.
The cast is no stranger to the rhythm of television;
collectively having racked up a dozen or so sitcoms
collectively, so it could find its stride, if given the
opportunity. This show was much better as an hour-long
drama, when it came on TNT as Men of a Certain Age, but this
format allows us to laugh at the characters instead of with
them, which I haven’t decided if that is a good thing or a
bad thing. I am going to give it another shot to show to me
they can look past the old gender stereotypes and show me
something new and insightful, but its on a pretty short
leash.
