Trophy Wife is just one of the many family-centric shows
airing this season. Even though it has a terrible name, and
is being promoted in a very misleading way (similar to
another show of an equally unfortunate name: Cougar Town), I
think ABC has a diamond in the rough here.
Malin Ackerman plays Kate, the young third wife of Pete,
played by Bradley Whitford. Whitford is adorable as the
put-upon, and constantly vexed husband/ex-husband to
Ackerman’s fresher, younger version of ABC’s OTHER trophy
wife, Gloria. While this show does seem to be riding the
coattails of Modern Family, it has enough heart to survive
the first round of cuts. There is not a whole lot of
gimmick, aside from the dysfunction afforded by Marcia Gay
Harden and Michaela Watkins as the ex-wives. Harden plays
Diane, an extreme type-A personality that is tough and cold
and a little scary to Kate. Watkins is Jackie, a hippy-dippy
free spirit that could quickly turn into farce if she
doesn’t keep a tight hold on the reins. But all-in-all, it
has authenticity in the places that count. The family comedy
is here to stay, and Trophy Wife might as well be in on it
this season.
