TV Show Reviews

"The
New Normal" review by Suzanne
Tuesdays 9:30/8:30pm on NBC
I really enjoyed this show, even though it's not the
funniest sitcom I've ever seen. I really like the
characters, and the show is very "cute". They should have
made it an hour long "light" drama like Parenthood or Royal
Pains because it's really more like one of those shows,
although sometimes it veers into farce territory, like Glee.
In fact, when the pilot's half hour was up, I wanted more
and was surprised it was already done.
The show is about a young woman, Goldie (Georgia King)
with a little girl Shania. She has a boyfriend and a
dead-end job, but her boyfriend cheats on her, so she leaves
town with Shania on the spur of the moment and drives to
L.A. She has a bigoted, shrewish mother, Jane, that she also
leaves. Jane is played masterfully by Ellen Barkin, who
still looks great.
Goldie needs money, so she offers to be a surrogate for
this gay couple, David (Justin Bartha) and Bryan (Andrew
Rannells). These are two really good-looking and fun guys.
Everyone on the show is very likable, and they make a great
extended family. Some people may find Jane to be too
obnoxious. I think she's pretty funny.
It's great to have more shows about different types of
people, like the two gay guys and their African-American
transvestite friend, Rocky (NeNe Leakes). It's also great to
show young single moms, and people who are bigots. The world
is made up of many different types of people--not just the
ones you usually see on sitcoms.
Check it out! I think it's worth watching.
