TV Show Reviews

"Belle's" review by Suzanne
Airs on TV One Fridays 10/9c
I had never heard of this show (or its
network) until I read about it on some website that was
talking about upcoming TV shows. It's got a great cast, and
the writing sometimes reminds me of the Cosby Show. That's
probably because it's created by Ed Weinberger, who created
the Cosby Show, Amen, and Taxi, as well as wrote many
sitcoms such as Mary Tyler Moore.
Two actors that you will definitely
recognize are stars Elise Neal and Keith David. The
actors do a fine job, but the writing is very uneven. Some
of it is truly awful. One episode I saw online has Jill
(Neal) dating this "perfect" guy.... until he finds out that
he's an atheist. Her family treats him like he just said he
was a Nazi. Worse, the guy is a liar and a cheat. It was a
horrible episode full of stereotypes.
On the other hand, I've seen much worse
shows on cable. The characters seem very real and
3-dimensional, for the most part (not so much Jill's
daughter, who is just sitcom-cute). They need to work on
their jokes a bit and not lean so much on stereotypes and
bad story ideas.
I didn't know that TV One was a new show for
African-Americans. I have DISH and we don't have this
channel. Sounds like it has a lot of great old sitcoms.
Their slogan is "Where Black Life Unfolds". It's about time
another channel came along to give BET some competition!
