Primetime Show Reviews

"The Secret Circle"
review by Suzanne
Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW
The Secret Circle is about some witches in a small town - most
of them teenagers. I love shows about witches, but this one is not as good as
Charmed or Eastwick, or even Vampire Diaries. It's overly-serious. The best
shows have a hint of humor.
The actors are very good. They have one of my favorite actors, Gale Harold, but
unfortunately they have him playing this very serious oaf. He showed in past
roles how great he is at being funny and sarcastic, so this is a real waste of
his talents. I also love Thomas Dekker, who plays one of the teenage witches.
He's doing a great job as the earnest young man.
I am still watching the show, but I keep hoping it gets better. The story is
okay, but nothing special so far. It has some twists and turns that you don't
expect. It's not completely boring or stupid, it's just not that great compared
to other shows of its type. I guess my main problem with it, besides the lack of
humor, is that I don't really care about the characters that much. It means they
have not done a good job of making me care.
The other CW supernatural shows like "Supernatural" and "Vampire Diaries" are
fantastic. This one isn't even as good as "Smallville" (which I loved, but it
was not the best show, writing-wise). If you're going to cancel Smallville or
Hellcats, then why not replace it with something better, not worse?
