Primetime Show Reviews

"New Girl"
review by Suzanne
Premieres Tuesday, September 20, 9/8c on FOX
I wanted to like this show because Zooey Deschanel is great. I
enjoyed her work when she guest-starred on "Bones". However, this sitcom is not
something I would sit through every week. I keep saying this, but the #1
important thing for a sitcom is to be funny. I just didn't find this first
episode to be funny. Humor is very subjective, so maybe you will find it funny.
I had problems with the premise of the show. Deschanel plays a girl, Jess, who
is cheated on by her boyfriend, and she then she has to find a new place to
live. She finds one with three guys. Now, first of all, Deschanel is very
pretty, but they try to "ugly her up" by putting on big glasses and making her
act goofy. Way too goofy. All of them are trying way too hard. Anyway, the actor
who plays her boyfriend was not nearly good looking enough to be her boyfriend.
Then, we're supposed to believe that she just meets these three guys on the
internet and moves in with them. And they have to think about it, even though
she is very pretty and they are just average-looking (and, you know, they are
GUYS). So none of that was believable. I don't care how goofy or nerdy she is, a
girl that pretty is not going to be in that situation. Then these guys kind of
treat her like their little sister. Please!! And they all act silly and goofy,
trying hard to make me laugh, but it just falls flat.
Sorry, I wish I could say nicer things. I hope she finds a better TV vehicle for
her talents. You can watch the first episode right now, for free, on FOX's
website.
