Primetime Show Reviews

"Hawaii 5-0"
season premiere review by Suzanne
Mondays 10/9 c on CBS
The old show Hawaii 5-0 was a solid cop show in the late 60's
and early 70's. It was not fun or all that exciting. The remake is another solid
show, but at least they are doing a good job of making it a little more
interesting. To be fair, shows back then did not have to be as exciting as they
have to now. They didn't have as much competition, and it was just a different
time. Shows moved slower and did not have as much character development. They
centered on the stories.
Both shows revolve around Steve McGarrett (played now by Alex O'Loughlin), an
ex-Navy man who runs a special task force on Honolulu, answering to the
governor. He is aided by Danny and Chin Ho. In the new show, they are also aided
by Chin Ho's niece (or cousin?), Kona. Danny is played by Scott Caan, Chin Ho is
played by Lost's Daniel Dae Kim, and Kona is played by Grace Park (known for
Battlestar Galactica and The Cleaner).
They do a good job of updating the show without changing too much. McGarrett
still says, "Book 'em, Danno" and the iconic theme song is exactly the same as
it was in 1968! I was very happy to hear that. Not only is the music the same,
but visually it is the same. It is very cool.
The pilot shows McGarrett chasing a terrorist, Hesse. Hesse kills McGarrett's
dad, and McGarrett kills his brother. McGarrett goes to hawaii, assembles his
team for the governor, finds Hesse, and Hesse falls into the water after being
shot. I'm guessing he will be back. The pilot seemed a bit like NCIS, but I
think the regular episodes will be more laid back, more like police drama. The
cast fits well together and are all likable.
I loved O'Loughlin in "Moonlight". He was in a terrible medical show last year.
I hope this new one is a big hit. It's a good, worth watching. I hope they let
O'Loughlin's hair grow out again because he is sexier with longer hair, IMHO.
