"Hardcore
Pawn"
review by Suzanne
Tuesdays 10pm on TruTV
As I keep saying, I don't watch nor like reality shows. And this
type I particularly hate. Still, I am not the one that you should go by because
many people love them.
Hardcore Pawn is about a very large and popular pawn shop in
Detroit. I'm sure that it's way more interesting to be there than to watch the
show. Any big city pawn shop is probably a great place to go through, especially
in a bad economy. Personally, I tend to stay out of areas that have pawn shops
because they are usually in "the ghetto" and not safe (not always, though).
In a show like this, they take advantage of people at their
worst moments (poor people who are desperate, in this case) and put them on
camera so that we can laugh at them. The people who work in the store are
kind of jerks, and they use the camera to further profit as well as make
themselves famous. On the face of it, it's not more interesting than any other
retail store, except you have the type of people you see on "Cops". Instead of
getting arrested, they're trying to sell their stuff (or buy it back). It
kind of makes you want to take a shower after watching it.
Still, the show is apparently successful, since they have
brought it back for a new season. I read that it is TruTv's most successful
show. If you love this kind of cheap voyeurism, have fun! I'm guessing it
is a "guilty pleasure" for a lot of people.

truTV Rings Up Another Season of Hit Series
HARDCORE PAWN
truTV is heading back to Detroit for more
adventures in the world of pawn. The network has ordered a second season of the
hit series HARDCORE PAWN, an inside look at one of the country’s largest
pawn shops and the family that runs it. HARDCORE PAWN, which in August scored
truTV’s biggest series launch ever, is produced by Zodiak USA. The network has
ordered eight episodes, slated to begin in December.
HARDCORE PAWN takes viewers behind the scenes at American Jewelry and Loan,
where customers bring in everything from alligators to prosthetic limbs. Each
pawn ticket has a story, and there are more than 45,000 stories in the warehouse
to tell. At the center of American Jewelry and Loan are owner Les Gold and his
staff, including his son, Seth, and his trusted manager, Rich. They have to be
ready to deal with the unexpected when people’s personal items are on the line.
As each episode of this fascinating series reveals, haggling over a price can
quickly escalate into an all-out conflict.
“This summer, truTV viewers fell in love with HARDCORE PAWN, from the Gold
family and their staff to the incredible array of customers who come through the
doors of American Jewelry and Loan,” said Marc Juris, executive vice president
and general manager of truTV. “We look forward to seeing what new surprises
HARDCORE PAWN has in store.”
This summer, the Aug. 16 premiere of HARDCORE PAWN scored truTV’s biggest series
launch ever, with 2.1 million viewers, more than 1 million adults 18-49 and
602,000 men 18-49. The series has averaged 1.8 million viewers; 1 million
adults 18-49; and 546,000 men 18-49. It has frequently ranked among cable’s Top
5 entertainment programs in its timeslot with key male and adult demos.
HARDCORE PAWN is executive-produced by Natalka Znak, Claire O’Donohoe, Mike
Gamson and Richard Dominick. For truTV, Robyn Hutt serves as executive in
charge of production and Anthony Horn is executive producer.
