"The Craigs List Killer" review by Suzanne
Airs Monday, January 3, 2011, at 9PM ET/PT on Lifetime

The Craigslist Killer is a good suspense story, the kind that Lifetime does very well. It's based on a true story of a guy who met women for sex on that famous web site and then killed them. They do a good job of showing the killer and his girlfriend, and letting us peek a little bit into his psyche (as to why he is a killer). It is a good story, which is fortunate for them, with a beginning, middle and end. My only complaint would be that it would be nice to have a little more character development for all of the people in the story. I guess they only had so much time, and they concentrated most of their time on the killer.

The acting is very good. It stars Jake McDorman, whom I've never seen before, as the killer Markoff. He is outstanding in the role as a medical student with lots of secrets. Agnes Bruckner (whom you may know from 24 or Grey's Anatomy) plays his clueless-yet-devoted girlfriend Megan. Daniel Baldwin is completely under-cast as the police detective who investigates the murders. They should have given him more to do.

See, I think the media played this internet angle up because that's what shocks people. However, he was not meeting "regular" women on there. He was meeting prostitutes. So in that sense he is no different than any other serial killer who murders prostitutes. The whole Craig's List angle was pretty meaningless. I'm sure he went on plenty of porn and dating web sites, not just that one. What makes the story interesting is not the internet angle, but the fact that this seemingly clean-cut, brilliant guy, who seemed to have the ideal life, really had this dark life full of secrets, lies, and death. Aside from hinting that he wasn't close to his family, and that he felt he didn't deserve his girlfriend, they don't really answer the question as to why he acted this way...maybe they felt the answer is beside the point, since he's clearly a nutjob.

It is an interesting and compelling story. If you like shows like "Criminal Minds" then you should enjoy this movie. It has a good ending that will not disappoint. It's very seldom that you will find a real life story with such a neat and tidy ending, like they usually have on fictional TV shows.

Press Release:

Jake McDorman (Greek, Live Free or Die Hard), Agnes Bruckner (Private Practice, 24) and William Baldwin (Parenthood, Gossip Girl) star in the gripping Lifetime Original Movie The Craigslist Killer, premiering Monday, January 3, 2011, at 9PM ET/PT.   Based on a true story, the movie tells the story of the shocking double life led by Philip Markoff, the handsome Boston University medical student and National Honor Society member accused of killing a New York masseuse he found through classified ads on the popular website.

Immediately following the movie at 11PM ET/PT, Lifetime will premiere an all-new hour-long documentary, Beyond the Headlines: Catching the Craigslist Killer.  The program includes interviews with people who knew Markoff and his victims, as well as investigators and prosecutors who speak on camera about the case for the very first time.  They tell the story of Markoff’s past and his murderous seven-day crime spree and delve into what caused him to commit suicide a year later.

The Craigslist Killer follows the dark, mysterious life Markoff (McDorman) carried online while preparing for a promising future as a doctor and a life of happiness with his fiancée Megan McAllister (Bruckner).  Seemingly destined for greatness as one of Boston University’s brightest med students, Markoff could do no wrong in the eyes of Megan, his friends, fellow students and professors.  But hidden from those close to him was the violent wrath only he and his victims knew – beginning with his alleged April 14, 2009, first-degree murder of a masseuse who advertised her services on Craigslist.  When police discover the brutal killing and a number of other attacks on women were all connected to advertisements placed on Craigslist, their investigation ultimately leads them to Markoff.  Baldwin portrays the lead detective investigating the case.
