Primetime Show Reviews

Cast of "Glee"

"Glee" Series Premiere Review by Suzanne
Airing on FOX Wednesdays at 9/8c

I love Glee. I saw the first episode back last Spring when they first aired it. It's a very good show and should be around for a while.

For one thing, I love music, and I used to be in a lot of choirs in high school and college (no show choirs, though). That is also a drawback, though, because of course TV shows are not reality. You never see the kids in Glee actually learning music or rehearsing in any realistic way. That's fine because it is a TV show and not real life. I was also a teacher, so I have to just forget that Glee is not set in a real school, either.

This show is pure fantasy, in a good way. It's a comedy/musical/drama/soap opera, if you must classify it (which is hard to do). The characters do not burst out in song for no reason (it would be fine with me if they did; I love musicals, too). They sing mostly for the show choir numbers. Occasionally they will sing in the shower, or in their heads, or something. It works, though.

The actors do a great job in not only their potrayals, but in their singing and dancing. There is a lot of talent here. The writers are from "Nip/Tuck", another great show, albeit darker than "Glee". Glee has you rooting for the geeky choir kids and their teachers.

It's really hard to describe the show. Suffice it to say that it's funny, and well-written, and entertaining. If you don't like musicals, or music, then you shouldn't watch it. Anyone else should love it.

The first episode had a few old-school tunes for old fogies like me (i.e. songs from the 70's). In the second episode, they briefly sang a disco tune and also part of a 60's song. The others were modern songs. I hope they continue to do a mixture of tunes for all of us, of all ages.

You should definitely check it out because I guarantee you that most people you know will be watching this show this year.

You can download many of the Glee songs from iTunes as well. An album should be out soon, too.
