"Brothers" Series Review by Suzanne
Airing on FOX Fridays 8/7
This is a real stinker of a show. That's a shame because it's
got a great cast. The show is just not funny. They try very hard, but the script
sounds like it was written by a high school kid. Let's put it this way, if
someone told you that the actors were ad-libbing the whole show, you'd be kind of
impressed. To think that someone actually thought these lines were funny and wrote them down...it's very sad. There were one or two laughs, but the rest of the time it
was like watching a train wreck.
The show stars
Darryl "Chill" Mitchell,
former rapper and actor on "The John Larroquette Show". He was very funny on
that show, but that one must have had better writers. Unfortunately, Mr.
Mitchell was in a motorcycle accident in real life and is now in a wheelchair,
so his character is in one, too, and they mine it for lots of uncomfortable
laughs. I wouldn't mind that if the jokes were funny, though.
Former NFL star Michael Strahan plays the other brother, and he
plays, basically, himself - a former football star. He is not a bad actor
for a football player, and he's very handsome. He and Chill have good
chemistry together.
Their parents are played by Carl Weathers, another former
football player, who is probably best known for the Rocky movies; and CCH
Pounder, a great actress who is the most wasted part of this show. They all
deserve a better show. It's not really a surprise that FOX put this show on
Friday nights. That's where you dump series you have no confidence in. I
don't know why anyone would think it was a good lead-in for the great scifi show
"Dollhouse", though, unless the script was written by aliens (which would
explain a lot). Untalented aliens that don't quite understand our humor.
