Primetime Show Reviews
"Brothers & Sisters"
Review by Suzanne 9/25/06

This is basically a primetime soap opera. It's not like
"Dynasty" or "Melrose Place"...more like last season's "Sisters" or last
season's "Related". However, it's not as good as either of those shows (at least
judging from the first episode). It's about a family with grown-up kids, and
their relationships, both with each other and significant others.
It stars Calista Flockhart as Kitty, the sister who is a right-wing Republican,
unlike most of her siblings. She has to decide in the pilot whether to come home
and take the big talk radio job, or stay where she is and marry her boyfriend.
She doesn't get along with her mom. She has a bunch of brothers and sisters,
some of whom work in the family business.
The other actors in the show include Sally Field, Tom Skerrit, Balthazar Getty,
and Ron Rifkin--all actors whom I love. Unfortunately, Skerrit will not be a
series regular. I also have trouble with "Kitty" being a right-winger, so I will
have to see how that turns out. I think it's interesting, though, that earlier
in the show she has an attitude about her sister's working and handling
marriage, but then later she has to make a choice between being engaged and
having career advancement. That's a worthy dilemma.
The show started slowly, but did get more interesting as the episode went on.
The father is cheating on the mother. The mother and daughter have "issues". One
of the brothers is a drug addict. Something happens to the father at the end of
the episode. The grandfather (uncle?) or father may be cheating the family
business. We still don't know if she is going to marry her boyfriend or not. I
just don't know if I like it well enough to keep watching. I may check out a few
more episodes before I decide.
