Primetime Show Reviews
"The Mountain"
Review by Suzanne 9/27/04
This is not a bad show, but after watching the premiere, I have to say it's
not a very good one, either. I just found it very bland and boring.
Everything was okay, and slightly interesting, but it just didn't grab me.
I was watching the clock while I was tuning in, wondering why I was wasting my
time, and waiting for something to happen.
The actor who stars in the show, Oliver Hudson deserves better. He was
great on "Dawson's Creek" as the tortured writer. Barbara Hershey plays
his mother here and it's sad to see a great film star reduced to playing "Mom"
on a WB show. I was annoyed, too, that they killed off Chad Everett's
character before the show even began, since he is one of my favorite actors from
my childhood. There are plenty of fresh, new faces, to be sure, but maybe
it's because I'm too old, I had trouble telling them apart. Oh, and the
guy who played Mulder and Scully's boss on "The X-Files" was on the show, too,
but I'm not sure if he will be a regular character or not.
The show is about this family that owns a mountain and a ski lodge on the
mountain. The grandfather dies in an avalanche and leaves the mountain and
the business to one of his sons. He doesn't leave it to the son that has
been learning the business and basically running it for years, nor to his
daughter who loves the mountain. He leaves it to the other son, who is not
really interested in the business at all. But of course, the sons end up
working together to make sure the company is not taken over by another company.
There is also a sister who snowboards a lot, and she almost got raped by this
other guy, so her brothers had to save her. And the bad guys (the ones who
wanted to take over the company) have a daughter that slept with the hero,
presumably trying to get an in with him so he would sell (which didn't work).
The whole thing seemed like some bad '80's movie, but not as colorful. I
half-expected them to have a ski-off at the end to decide who gets to keep the
mountain.
If there were nothing else on during this time slot and I was bored, I might
watch the show, but that's not likely to happen.
