Part 6

The next morning, a subdued but calm Marisol
was having a room service
breakfast of café au lait and a Spanish omelet, when an upset Kate appeared
at her door.
Still in a rose-colored silk kimono, Marisol opened the door herself.
“Good morning,” Marisol said calmly. An agitated Kate burst inside without
waiting to be invited. She was stunned by Marisol’s left eye, which was swollen
and already turning black and blue.
“I came.....to ...apologize for last night, and to make sure that you were
all right,” Kate began.
“I’m fine,” Marisol answered, smiling at her friend. “Truly,” she added
when she saw the skeptical look on Kate’s face. “In all honesty, you should be
more worried about yourself than about me. I knew what Sonny was like.”
At Kate’s crest-fallen look, Marisol touched her friend’s sleeve gently.
“Kate, we --the both of us -- knew this was a bad idea from the start. You need to find
yourself another maid of honor and move on with the wedding festivities. I
can’t.... I won’t.... accept any more abuse from Sonny, but neither will I be
responsible for breaking you apart. That is a decision that you have to make for
yourselves. It doesn’t mean that we can’t be friends, you and me. “
“I will make Sonny apologize....,”
Kate began uselessly.
Marisol shook her head sadly, looking at the patterns in the hotel carpet.
“Why? What purpose would it serve? You and I both know he wouldn’t mean it,
and all it would do is drive a bigger wedge between the two of you. Look,
Kate, Sonny won’t hurt you. You are like Adela ... the saint ... the virtuous woman on a
pedestal that Sonny worships and adores. He won’t let anyone hurt you. He
would die protecting you. “
“Just let me arrange a meeting
between you and Sonny. I am sure that we can work something out,” Kate said.
“Kate, I don’t WANT to work anything out! I am done,” Marisol
said quietly
but firmly to her friend. “Truly, the best thing that happened to me was that my
mother didn’t want me. In a strange sort of way, she saved me. Otherwise I
might have ended up as power-hungry and vengeful as Sonny, or as down-trodden
and abused as she was for most of her life.”
Marisol and Kate were both quiet for a few minutes, and then they embraced.
“Thank you for asking me here to stand up for you. I truly will never forget
that you asked me. But there’s an old saying that you need to know when to arrive
and when to leave in life, and this is definitely one of those times, “
Marisol said. She started to say something more but was interrupted by a
knock on the door: It was Sonny.
