Viki knocks on the door of La Boulaie. She scowls when David
answers the door wearing only a towel. He comments that he must look stupid in
such a non-festive towel on Halloween. He invites her in and asks if she has
heard anything about her son-in-law. She says no. He says dealing with a double
murder right before election night must have her chi bound up tight. She tells
him she isn’t in the mood for naked Tai Chi. He says that if this isn’t the time
for sexual healing, he doesn’t know when is.
Rex enters the motel room where he and Natalie stayed the night. He informs her that no one on the day shift recognized Jared from the picture. Natalie wonders how Jared got the motel matches if he was never there. Rex tells her that a maid and a desk clerk have not arrived yet so perhaps one of them will remember seeing Jared. Natalie tells him that the longer she and Jared are apart, the more she feels like she is losing him.
At Gigi’s house, Gigi tells Shane that she doesn’t know when Rex will be home. She explains that he is on a case and that if he could tell them, he would. Shane complains that Rex is missing the Halloween party. The doorbell rings. Gigi sends Shane to the kitchen to get bags so he can start bagging the Halloween candy while she gets the door. She answers the door to John McBain who is looking for Rex. She tells him Rex is out of town. He sees the ticket stub from last night’s concert and asks if Rex left after the concert. Gigi tells him she didn’t go to the concert with Rex.
Schuyler Joplin exits his room at the Angel Square Motel and notices his ticket stub from last night’s concert is still in his jacket pocket. Roxy comes up to him holding a garment bag and asks him if he can do a favor for her kid and his squeeze.
At La Boulaie, Viki warns David to keep his towel on. She tells him that Jared has not been charged with anything yet. David asks her if she will fall into his strong capable arms. He assures her he is only offering his services; he aims to heal. Viki tells him she is there to see Dorian. David asks her when Dorian became such a chick-magnate. Viki laughs.
In the parlor, Dorian berates a personal shopper for bringing her unacceptable shoes for her wedding. David and Viki enter and Viki asks her if she is going through with it. Dorian says that of course she is going through with it. She spitefully says for David’s benefit that she wouldn’t dream of leaving her fiancée at the altar. The personal shopper departs with the rejected shoes. Dorian asks Viki what brings her to the enemy camp. She says she would have thought that Viki would have her hands full with her various family crises. Viki confirms that that is why she is there.
At Llanfair, Jessica answers her phone. Brody says it was too late to call her when he arrived in Michigan last night. She asks him how her sister is, but he tells her to tell him how she is doing first. She tells him they haven’t found Jared yet. He knew that, but wants to know what is wrong with her; he can hear it in her voice. She tells him that her dead husband Nash spoke to her on the telephone last night.
At La Boulaie, Viki tells Dorian that Charlie and Natalie are worried about Jared, and someone is stalking Jessica. Dorian tells her that she has to deal with her wedding preparations and asks Viki what her family crises have to do with Dorian. Viki informs her that she will not participate in the final debate this evening. She says the voters know where she stands on the key issues and she has to concentrate on her family. Dorian tells Viki that playing the tragic family card to win last minute votes will not work. Dorian says Viki may have an alcoholic husband, a daughter with mental illness, and a son-in-law up on murder charges; Dorian still has an out-gay lesbian fiancée. She says she will be the first out-gay, married to her partner mayor in the United States. Viki asks Dorian if, while using this issue as an effort to get elected, she has considered the real people out there who care passionately about their civil rights.
In Kyle Lewis’ room at the Angel Square Motel, Kyle is holding his tuxedo and tells nick he can hardly believe they are really getting married. Nick tells him that in a few hours he will see Kyle wearing the tuxedo and saying those amazing words to him. Amelia says she wishes she were part of a real couple too. Nick says Amelia and Dorian may not be a real couple, but they are the couple that everyone will tune in to see. He says that the whole world will get to see what they believe in because of her. Amelia says he is right, and this is just the beginning.
In the hallway outside of Schuyler’s room, Roxy asks Schuyler to take the Halloween costumes in the garment bag to Rex and Gigi because she is too backed up at the Hair Haven with people getting ready for the big gay wedding. She asks if it would be a problem for him to take them. He says it’s not a problem and he takes the garment bag from her.
At Gigi’s house, John asks her if she knows where Rex was going. Shane comes out and asks Gigi if she will help him find the bags she sent him to get. Gigi goes to help Shane, leaving John alone in the living room. John sees Rex’s credit card statement on the desk, writes down the number, and stuffs it in his pocket before Gigi returns. When she comes back, Gigi asks John if Rex is in trouble. He tells her he just wanted to talk to him about a case he is working on. He turns to leave and tells her Shane looks happy; she and Rex are doing a good job with him. Once outside Gigi’s house, John calls the station and says he needs to trace the activity on Rex Balsam’s credit card.
In the hotel room, Natalie asks Rex what they will do if no one has seen Jared. He tells her they will go home. She tells him they can’t go home until they find him because the police think he is guilty. Rex asserts that Jared is guilty. He says Jared might not be guilty of murder, but he admitted to setting up the beating and the stalking. Natalie insists they find him so he can explain it so they can figure it out. Rex says maybe there is nothing to figure out. Natalie says there is no way that Jared is mean enough or mad enough at Jessica for him to want her to think that Nash is haunting her.
At Llanfair, Jessica is talking on the telephone to Brody. She tells him that John bugged all of their phones, hoping that Jared would try to reach Natalie and he recorded Nash’s call. Brody tells her she knows it couldn’t have been Nash. She tells him that John compared the voice with a phone message from Nash and it was a match. Brody tells her he should not have left Llanview and he is coming back. She tells him she is fine and his sister needs him. She says she will let him know if John has any news.
Brody goes into his sister, Nadine’s house. She gives him the information about the foreclosure on their mother’s house. She thanks him for coming all this way to bail her out of this mess. He tells her he cannot stay. She tells him he has to stay.
At Llanfair, John tells Jessica that they are enhancing the call to try to pick up background noises that may be a clue to where the call originated. He asks her if she has heard from Natalie. She tells him that Natalie left a voicemail message telling Jessica not to worry. She asks John if she should worry. John tells her he thinks Natalie is with Rex chasing a lead on Jared. Jessica says she doesn’t understand Jared hooking up with someone from prison, someone pretending to be her dead husband, Pamela Stewart’s murder, Jared disappearing, or this phone call. John tells her that all of the events are connected by someone or something.
Rex calls Gigi on the telephone from the motel. She tells him that John McBain was looking for him. He asks her what she told him. She replies she doesn’t know anything to tell. She asks him if he can tell her what is going on. He asks her to trust him for a little while longer and he will explain everything as soon as he can. He tells her he is sorry about tonight and he will call her soon. Disgusted, she says, “Whatever.” He tells her he loves her more than anything. After they have hung up, Gigi’s doorbell rings. She opens the door to Schuyler, who presents her with the costumes Roxy had him bring. He tells them he hopes they have fun tonight and turns to leave. Shane tells him he can’t go; he and Gigi need him.
At the motel, Natalie apologizes to Rex for asking him to help her. He advises her that John McBain has already gone to see Gigi. He says Gigi is breaking a whole bunch of laws by keeping the cops in the dark. Natalie admits that John called her last night too, and she knows she should have told Rex sooner. Rex tells her that if John is at his house asking questions, he has no idea where they are, and neither does Gigi. Natalie asks Rex to find Jared before John does.
At Nadine’s house in Michigan, Brody tells his sister that he needs to be with his girlfriend because she is going through some stuff. Nadine says she needs him too. He tells her he wishes she had explained on the phone that this is just a money problem; she made it sound like it was life and death. She tells him it is; she will have nothing if she loses the house. He asks her what she expects him to do; he doesn’t have any money. She tells him she has one last chance to appeal to the bank before they foreclose and take possession of the house. He has to go to the hearing with her and testify for her. He asks her why the bank would care what he thinks. She says the judge will listen to him because he is a former navy seal and war vet. He tells her he doesn’t think that matters. She protests that this was their mother’s house; they grew up here. He demands to know why she refinanced it. She tells him she owed money and they man that came to the door said it would be easy. He asks her when the hearing is. She tells him next week. She asks him to promise to stay until then.
At Llanfair, John tells Jessica that it doesn’t make sense that Jared would be responsible for the call she got from Nash while he is on the run and wanted for questioning in a murder. He tells her that it would have to be someone who knew Nash well enough to put something like this in motion and someone who knew enough about their relationship to know how to get to her. He asks her if she can think of anyone who would want to make her think that Nash was reaching out to her. Jessica says there is someone.
At La Boulaie, Dorian tells Viki that every human being has the fundamental right to marry the person that they choose. She says she wanted to drive that point home during the final debate. Viki says Dorian obviously staged this stunt wedding to take place immediately before the debate because the issue is important to her. Dorian concludes that Viki is determined to stand her up. Viki says, “C’est la vie” (That’s life). Dorian says “no, c’est la Guerre” (This is war). David asks Dorian if she is dramatic much. Dorian tells David to put on some clothes. David tells her clothes make him look fat. He leaves the parlor. Dorian tells Viki that if she doesn’t participate in the debate, she will let everyone know that she was overwhelmed by her family problems and then they can let the media and the voters decide. Viki informs Dorian that she will take her chances and that she has already sent out the announcements so Dorian can save hers. She says her family comes first. The personal shopper returns with more shoes for Dorian to consider. Dorian asks Viki if she will excuse her. Viki tells her that since she doesn’t know if Dorian is the bride or the groom, she won’t say best wishes or congratulations. Viki departs the parlor.
In Kyle’s room, he asks Amelia what this is just the beginning of. He asks if they are planning to do the gay group-wedding thing in towns all across America. Nick suggests that they focus on making their ceremony a success first. Nick observes that a button on Kyle’s tuxedo is loose. Amelia asks him if he has a needle and thread. Kyle doesn’t, so he goes to see if Roxy does. When Kyle leaves, Amelia concludes to Nick that he hasn’t told Kyle everything. Kyle leans against his door once he has exited his room as if he is relived to be out of there. Roxy is a few feet away talking on the phone. He interrupts her to ask if she has a needle and thread that he can use to fix a loose button on his tuxedo. He concludes that she has had a busy day. She tells him that her salon is busier this week than the wax-a-thon before gay pride week. She asks him if he is really going through with this. He says yes. She tells him he looks like a runaway groom waiting to happen. She asks him if he is sure that he is ready for this. He tells her it is normal for a groom to be nervous before his wedding. She tells him she doesn’t know anything about normal or a wedding. She says she doesn’t think the words “normal” and “wedding” should be allowed to be used in the same sentence. He asks her if she could be there for a friend when he says, “I do.” He tells her that he doesn’t have a lot of family left since his sister died so he thought it would be nice to look out into the crowd and see a friendly face smiling back at him. She tells him she doesn’t think he can. He says he gets it if she is busy or not enough notice. She says she doesn’t want to aid and abet. He tells her he thought she supported equal marriage rights. She tells him doesn’t support marriage to the wrong man; that’s a crime.
In the parlor at La Boulaie, Dorian decides on the perfect pair of shoes. She tells the personal shopper that she can’t wait to wear them when she stands next to the woman that she loves and declares her commitment to her in front of her friends, her family, and all the major media outlets in the state.
In the foyer at La Boulaie, Viki asks David if he is going to stay and watch Dorian go through with this. David confides that he didn’t think it would go on this long. He says he thought they would suck face in public a few times and then break up for “personal reasons.” Viki tells him she knows he is hurting. He says he is disappointed; he thought he would get to see some hot action. Viki asks him why he doesn’t tell Dorian how he feels. He asks if she means gypped. She says no, hurt. He tells her to stop using Jedi mind tricks to see through him. He changes the subject and says he knows she wouldn’t have pulled out of the debate if she weren’t worried about her family. She admits that she is worried but is trying to stay optimistic. He tells her he is sorry she is going through it. She says her problems are nothing compared to what her husband and daughter might be facing. David recalls that Viki said something about Jessica being stalked. She tells him Jessica has received some bizarre phone calls and the police are handling it. She says they are lucky Jessica has Brody Lovett by her side now.
At Nadine’s house, Brody tells his sister he cannot stay a week. She says he has to; she can’t go through this alone. She says she is sorry she wasn’t there to help him when he was in trouble but she was scared. She says she didn’t know him when he came back from the war and then the police told her he shot someone. She admits that she was a coward. She says she knows it is not fair that she didn’t come when he needed her and now she is asking for his help. He tells her he will help her. He suggests that he helps her today, goes back to Llanview tomorrow, then returns for the hearing next week. She agrees and says one day at a time. He tells her that every day away from Jessica feels like a lifetime.
At Llanfair, Jessica tells John that she knows Nash is not alive. He apologizes for making her bring it all up. She tells him he is just doing his job and she wants him to find out who is doing these things to her and her family. He tells her he is going to go and will be back when he knows something more. She assures him that she is ok and can handle it. She tells him that Nash never really talked about his past so she has no idea who would want to impersonate Nash. John’s phone rings. He asks the person when Balsom last used it.
Rex opens the motel room door. A bellman shows Rex the picture of Jared and says he understands he is looking for him. Natalie asks the bellman if he has seen him. The bellman confirms that Jared was there.
In the foyer at La Boulaie, Viki tells David that he knows she loves him and worries about him. She says she knows he has serious issues with Dorian’s wedding. He tells her it will be a couture nightmare with all the ties and bouquets clashing. Viki tells him he still cares about Dorian. David says it does not matter if he cares. If Dorian wants a wedding, Dorian gets a wedding. Viki asks him what he will do after the election. He tells her that depends on who wins. He tells her that if there is anything he can do… Viki thanks him and hugs him. Dorian enters the foyer from the parlor and sees David and Viki hugging. She says oh, no and observes to Viki that she is not gone yet. Viki tells David to take good care of himself. He assures her that he always does. Viki leaves. Dorian observes that David is still in his towel. David replies that she is still in her little ninja outfit. He makes his way toward the stairs and she stops him. She asks him why Viki had her arms around him. He asks her why she cares.
At Gigi’s house, Shane tells Schuyler that they need someone to wear the third costume. Gigi tells her son that Schuyler probably has plans. Shane protests that they need three people or it won’t work. She tells him the two of them will do fine. He reminds her that they need three people to win and Rex said to find someone. Schuyler tells Shane that he is sure he will find somebody better. Shane says the person has to fit the costume and tells his mother to make Schuyler say yes. Shane says if Schuyler doesn’t stand in for Rex, there is no point in going. He says he has been waiting forever for this. Gigi asks Schuyler could do it.
At the motel, the bellman tells Natalie and Rex that their friend came in looking for a room yesterday. A cop car pulled up outside and he looked a little nervous. The bellman says he could tell the man was on the run. He says the cop went to the coffee shop next door and the man said he changed his mind; he didn’t want to stay here after all. Natalie asks if he said where he was going. The bellman says no, but the man asked if he could use a computer so he let him use his laptop. Rex asks the bellman why he would be so helpful to someone he thought was on the run from the cops. He says he believes in being kind to strangers and the man didn’t seem dangerous. He used the computer and left. He doesn’t know where he went. Natalie asks if they can see the computer.
At Llanfair, John disclosed to Jessica that Rex used his credit card at a gas station but he cannot tell her where. Jessica asks him if he is going after him. John tells her that if Natalie and Rex are on Jared’s trail, he probably wants to find out what they are doing. Jessica asks him to make sure nothing happens to her sister. He tells her that whoever made the call wasn’t Nash. She says she knows.
At Nadine’s house, Brody asks his sister if she had no idea that her payments would triple after twelve months. She guesses she wasn’t listening when they explained that. Brody’s phone rings. It is Jessica. Nadine listens intently to Brody’s conversation. Brody asks Jessica if John told her how the caller imitated Nash’s voice. She tells him no, but they are analyzing the recording. Brody asks to speak to John. She tells him that John left to go after Rex because apparently Natalie and Rex got a lead on Jared and left town without telling anyone. Brody says he doesn’t like this. Jessica insists that she is ok. He tells her everyone is gone and asks who is going to watch out for her. Jessica repeats that she is ok. Brody tells her he is coming home first thing in the morning. Upon hearing that, Nadine snaps the pencil she is holding in half.
At La Boulaie, Dorian tells David it doesn’t matter what Viki does now; she has practically handed Dorian the election by backing out of the debate. David tells her he wouldn’t pop the champagne just yet. Dorian says the city is facing crucial problems and Viki says her family needs her. Dorian asks if the voters are supposed to put confidence in Viki. David tells Dorian she has made an excellent point; Viki is cooked so Dorian can cancel her wedding. Dorian is surprised at the notion. He says if she is guaranteed to win the election, why not cancel the wedding. That way she can support all the real gay and lesbian couples who want to commit to each other and she doesn’t have to wake up tomorrow as Mrs. Amelia Bennett. Dorian tells him she is not a quitter; she cannot disappoint her public. He asks her what about her privates. He corrects his phrase and says he means the people who matter to her the most.
Nick and Amelia are alone in Kyle’s room. Amelia considers what Kyle might choose. Nick tells her they can wait until later to think about it. He tells her it is pointless to talk about hopes, dreams, and what-ifs until they are actually ready to take that step. Amelia says that if she has anything to do with it, it will be a reality soon. He asks her what time it is. She says it is time to put phase three of her plan in motion.
In the hallway a few feet from Kyle’s door, Roxy asks Kyle if his fiancé knows he is in love with another man. Kyle asks her to stop saying that. Roxy tells him he knows she is right. She says she knows Fish was here last night. She asks if it was a last little dip before the big wedding. He tells her it is not like that. The truth is that he and Oliver are never going to happen. She asks him if he is trying to convince her or him.
At Gigi’s house, Schuyler asks Gigi if she is sure about this. Shane asks why she wouldn’t be. He apologizes to Schuyler for being a jerk before; he didn’t know he was just trying to help his mom get the goods on Aunt Stacy. He says he thought he was trying to move in on his mom. Schuyler nervously laughs. Shane asks Schuyler if he will do it. Schuyler agrees.
The bellman brings his laptop to Rex and Natalie’s room. Rex asks him if he has used it since Jared did. The bellman says no. Natalie says the last searches in the Internet history should be Jared’s.
At Nadine’s house, Brody tells his sister that his flight leaves in three hours. She protests that he said he was going to stay. He tells her he cannot wait until tomorrow because Jessica is all alone and needs him. He tells her he will bust his butt on the foreclosure from Llanview and come back for the hearing if things are cool. She says ok and tells him that it means a lot that he came all this way. She says she hasn’t been much of a sister and will never forgive herself for not being there when he had his breakdown. He tells her he is fine now and they will make it through this together. He tells her he should get going. She says she made him breakfast. She takes his cup to refill his coffee and puts something in it. She brings the cup back and hovers over him as he drinks the spiked coffee.
Viki returns to Llanfair. She assures Jessica that John will figure this out. Jessica tells her mother not to worry about her; she should be with Charlie. As soon as Viki departs, Jessica’s phone rings. When she answers it, she hears Nash’s voice saying, “Jessica, it’s me. I need you.”
At La Boulaie, Dorian tells David with great power, comes great responsibility. He tells her he thinks she just quoted a cartoon superhero. She tells David that she cannot put her personal life ahead of the citizens of Llanview. Amelia enters, sees David wearing a towel, and asks if he isn’t cold. He says he is getting there. Amelia says she just came from checking on some of the wedding preparations. David says he will leave the two lovebirds alone and goes upstairs. Amelia asks Dorian if David is alright. Dorian says he is just a little upset about the wedding. Amelia asks he is will cause a problem. Dorian doesn’t think so but he has developed a rather odd quirk. He now believes that marriage should only be for people who are truly in love.
Kyle is sitting at his desk in his room, sewing the button on his tuxedo. Nick puts on his jacket and says he’d better go get ready. He asks Kyle if he is nervous. Kyle asks him what he thinks. Nike assures him that it will be fine. He kisses the top of Kyle’s head and leaves.
Dorian and Amelia go into the parlor at Llanfair. Dorian says she doesn’t know why David is being so melodramatic; it is not as if this is a real wedding, it is merely symbolic. Amelia tells Dorian it doesn’t have to be.
At Gigi’s house, Batman and Robin leap into the living room and run in slow motion. Catwoman slinks across the room. Shane says they look badass. Gigi scolds him. Schuyler says in his Batman voice that Robin meant bad, just bad. Shane asks Schuyler who Robin is without Batman. Gigi says they should go. Shane says his dad told him to take pictures. Gigi and Schuyler hesitate. Shane sets the timer on the digital camera and the three of them pose. Shane says dad will love it. Gigi and Schuyler groan.
In the motel room, Rex discovers that the last websites visited on the bellman’s computer were map websites. He was mapping driving directions in Yountville, CA in the Napa Valley. Natalie tells him that is where Nash’s vineyard was.
At Llanfair the voice on Jessica’s phone says, “You have to come to the vineyard.” Jessica says the vineyard is gone. The voice says, “The first one – Napa.”
In the motel room, Natalie tells Rex she doesn’t get it. She wonders why Jarhead would be headed to Napa. Rex tells her there is only one way to find out. He jumps up from his chair and goes to grab their things. He and Natalie bolt out of the room. The bellman extends his hand for a tip. Rex slaps the bellman’s hand and says he owes him one.
At Llanfair, Jessica asks the mysterious voice on the phone if he wants her to go to California. The voice says “The vineyard. I need you. Now. If you love me you’ll come and tell no one.”
John McBain goes to the motel that Natalie and Rex have left. He shows the bellman a picture of Natalie and Rex and asks if he has seen them. The bellman says yes, they left a little while ago. John asks if they said where they were going. The bellman says they said they were going home to someplace called Llanview. John shows the bellman a picture of Jared and asks if he has seen him. The bellman says like he told the other two, he has never seen this guy in his life.
At Nadine’s house, Brody is woozy. He takes out his phone and says he needs to call Jessica. His vision is too blurry to see the phone. He looks at his sister and asks her what she put in his coffee. She doesn’t answer. Brody collapses to the floor. Nadine takes his phone and calls someone. She tells the person that she had to go through with the emergency plan. She says she hated having to do that, but it is done. She tells the person not to worry. Brody won’t be able to get anywhere near Jessica anytime soon. “She’s all yours.”
