One Life to Live Update Wednesday 7/26/06

The sun is going down and Rex and Adriana are soaking wet. Adriana can't help
looking out into the horizon. Rex assures her that no one is out there waiting
for her. She leaves to dry her hair now.
Rex gets on the phone the minute that he is alone. "Hey, it's Rex Balsom. We all
set? Yes, I'm sure. Just leave it by the front door. Because I donít want my
girlfriend to have a clue, that's why."
Kelly can't take the fighting anymore with Kevin. He knows that and thinks that they should set about living separate lives from now on. "Ok. Well, Kevin, we're not engaged anymore. We donít live together. I think we're already pretty much living separate lives. If you donít want to see me, then why are you here?" He wanted to clarify things between them and makes sure they understand each other. "I just want you to respect my space and stay away from me and my family." She can't do that. "I will always be a part of your life. I will always be part of your family's life. Like it or not, we are bonded, and there's nothing you can do about that."
Cristian and Evangeline tell each other they love each other.
Todd comes bursting in.
Cristian finds his timing amazing. Todd ignores Cristian and instead addresses how beautiful Evangeline looks for someone who is sick. Cristian tells Todd to back off. Evangeline hears the arguing starting and she asks the men to stop. She wants to know about the bandages on her eyes. Someone also told her that she had surgery on her spine. "Yeah, you did," Todd says. "And it's all good. You'll be fine. But -- while you were out, I had Dr. Simmons operate on your eyes. And so when those bandages come off, there's a good chance you'll be able to see again."
Antonio is confused. He has to figure out where it is that Nash has taken Jessica and the baby.
Jessica struggles to get free of Nash and Bruce. She wants to have her baby back and be freed. Nash gives her the child. Jessica talks to her baby to make sure that she is okay. "Man, did we get lucky. Nobody in the parking lot or the elevator. Watch it, though. She is spunky. She's not going to give up," Bruce warns. Bruce has to get out of there now. He has a regular job and only works as muscle part-time.
Jessica is confused. There was no doorman when they came in. Nash tells that the man is just gone. "What, did you just pay him to disappear? It's not going to work, Nash. This is New York City. I'm going to find some way to get away from you." He sees her looking around and guesses what she is looking for. "If you're looking for a phone, Brucie took all the phones out of here. The only phone that's left is this one. Hey, this one here. Look at this. Hmm! Guess I need a new phone. You know, the amazing thing about these fabulous New York City penthouses -- you need a special key to get out of here. I'm afraid it's going to be just you and me, honey bunny."
Detective McKeon asks Antonio who he is. "My name's Antonio Vega. I used to be on the job back in Pennsylvania." Detective McKeon realizes something suddenly. He knows that Llanview is there. "That's where Nash Brennan was headed when he left here." Antonio kicked the door in to get into Nash's house. He wants to know what went on there. Detective McKeon tells that the case that was open is now closed. "Guy got in a scuffle, fell on a piece of broken glass, died of his wound." Antonio is not surprised to learn that Nash was involved in this when he realizes that the man who died was George Reston. He is a little surprised that the man believes this story. "Brennan is just one of those guys that rubs me the wrong way," Detective McKeon admits in spite of letting Nash go. Antonio can relate.
"Look, Nash, when I met you, I was really sick, but I'm strong now. And nothing that you can do is going to make me sick again. You can keep me locked up here all alone all you want!" He doesn't plan on leaving her alone. He wants to be there with her. She doesn't want that! "Yeah, well, the -- the Tess side of you does. And nobody's going anywhere till I have a little chat with her."
"You know what Kevin? You should go. You should start living that separate life you've been talking about." He is confused. "Why do you say we're bonded? There is nothing keeping us together anymore." She tells that she was only referring to how they used to love each other very much once. He can admit that, but doesn't want to talk about it. "I donít want to talk about it, either, but I think you're going to find, Kevin, that there's a connection between us, even though we canít be together anymore." He is finding this all too complicated and on that point they can agree. He has been questioning himself lately. "I just keep thinking about my place in all this. I think about why I turned away from you, why I alienated Duke. I just keep asking all these questions, and I'm looking for answers, and I -- and I go to his grave every day, and I look at the headstone with his name on it. And I realize that that's all I have left of him now. And I ask myself -- I say, "Why did you handle things this way? You know, how did we get to this place?" And the only thing I can come up with is that I felt like a life with me alone without a family just wasnít good enough for you."
Evangeline is stunned to know that she just had two surgeries, especially after she said she didn't want it the eye surgery. "Yeah, I know you didn't. I know you didn't, but -- but you were unconscious, and -- and I -- and I saw a chance, so --" Todd got the consent from her mother while she was out of it. "I can see that you're angry, and I -- I predicted that, and I'm ok with it. I'm -- I'm going to live with it. I think I did the right thing here." Evangeline is still reeling from the news. Cristian tells Todd that it is time for him to leave. "No." Evangeline says. "No, you both are staying right here -- till we get a few things straight."
Adriana calls out for Rex when she sees a car starting up. It drives off.
Adriana thinks how Rex didn't tell her that he was going somewhere and that wasn't even his car.
Someone grabs Adriana and she struggles, shouting for the person to leave her alone.
Rex calls to her so that she knows that it is him that is holding her. She relaxes.
She tells that the stalker was there and knows where they are. Rex says that he knows for a fact that the stalker has no idea where they are. He checked the area and there isn't anyone about. She is surprised that he didn't see the car. "The one that left that outside on the mat," she points. "Donít touch it! Whatever's in it is alive." Rex hopes the thing is alive. He asked for it to be delivered. It is lobster. He was hoping to surprise her with her favorite dishÖ "I had the fish market deliver two. I wanted it to be a surprise, so I made the call while you were drying your hair. I told the delivery guy to leave it by the door, not to ring the bell so it wouldnít freak you out. Good plan, right?" Adriana suddenly feels foolish. He doesn't understand. "I just -- when you said that you knew for sure the stalker hadnít been here, I thought, how could you possibly know that unless -- " Rex waits for her to finish her thought. "I told you it's just me being stupid. I'm -- I'm going to go start boiling water.
"Kevin, how could you ever think that you werenít good enough for me?" Kelly waits for her explanation. "Yeah, I donít even know where to start. I could always count on my father and my grandfather. You know, no matter what, they know how to take care of their family. They know how to take care of the people they love. You know, and there I was. I -- I'm in love with this -- this -- as Asa puts it -- this woman, the only decent Cramer woman. And all I wanted to do was take care of you, and be someone you could count on. And at the same time, be the man that my father and my grandfather could be proud of. And I was going to marry the woman of my dreams and -- and have a family with her. And be a man that they could look up to. You know? And God, that felt so good to me. Until I found out that I -- I couldnít be that man." She tries to interrupt but he isn't finished. "And I -- I felt like I failed somehow. And the whole time, I'm watching Duke. And I was surprised by what kind of a man he had become. You know? And the more time that I spent with him and the more I got to know him, I realized that he was everything that I wasnít. And then he told me -- he told me that he was in love with you. I -- I felt like I was so inferior. Like I couldnít -- like, how could I measure up? You know, so I turned away from you and -- and from him. I just wanted to put as much distance between us as I possibly could so that when you finally chose him, it wouldnít be so painful. And I said things -- things that -- that I canít take back, and I wish to God I could. But I -- you know what I'm talking about." She doesn't want to talk about this. "I told you -- have a baby with Duke. I donít know what I was thinking." She knows that he didn't mean that. "Was I trying to -- to hurt you, or to -- or to test you? I asked you to do the one thing that would completely destroy me. And I just -- I thank God that it didnít happen."
"You two are turning my blindness into a handicap. You seem to think because I canít see, I canít manage my own life. But my blindness does not make me stupid or helpless. I am an adult. I make my own decisions, and I will not be treated like a child by two men fighting like children. I find it ridiculous. I almost killed myself trying to run away from that. It has to stop." Todd and Cristian tell that their fighting started long before she came into the picture. She doesn't careÖ "Cristian, Todd is my friend. I get to pick my own friends. And, Todd, you seem to think you owe me something, but you donít. Last night cannot happen again. Ever." Cristian and Todd decide to do as they are told and behave better in future. Todd becomes thoughtful.
"You know, it's not going to work anymore. You canít just say Tess' name and send me out of the room, so just stop trying." Nash can't stop trying to reach Tess as that would be like killing her. "Tess isnít dead, she's a part of me. But I am making the decisions now for both of us. And you know, I used to feel guilty about you, because you didnít know what you were getting into when you met Tess." He feels she shouldn't feel sorry. She was the best thing that ever happened to him. "You blew it. You blew it. Because the second I get my baby out of here, we are going right to the police, and you can kiss all of your visitation rights goodbye." He can't understand her thinking. "You're treating me like a criminal. But just think about it for a minute. If the roles were reversed -- if it was Tess and I bringing up this baby, do you really think that Antonio wouldnít be doing whatever I'm doing?" She doesn't think that Antonio would act this way, and if he did, she wouldn't want to be with him. "The last half of the pregnancy, Tess handled, and Antonio was walking on eggshells around her --" That is only one example of Antonio having an opportunity to screw with Tess's head and not doing it. "Really? Never? Walking on eggshells? Tess was under lock and key before your little integration thing -- an integration thing that I made her do. And now you want me to walk away from her. To walk away from the two people who make my life mean anything." She can't believe what he has done. "You didnít even let me bring a diaper bag." He didn't let her bring a diaper bag for a reason. "Diapers are in the guest room back there. There's everything you need." She looks with horror at the room. "That is not a guest room, that is a full-blown nursery. How long are you-- are you going to keep us here?"
Evangeline can see them do it but she sure hopes that Cristian and Todd are shaking hands right now.
Michael enters. "The nurse told me you were awake. I need to examine her. I'm
going to have to ask you two to leave." Cristian and Todd leave the room now.
"I donít like you Todd. And I'll never be ok with you being in Evangeline's life." Todd finds this rich. "So let me get this straight. You tell her you love her, then you lie to her the next minute? You got a great future with her."
"Hell, Renee wonít let us tell Asa about Duke. She said his heart couldnít take it." Kelly is surprised at how bad things are going for poor Asa. "Yeah. Every time I go to see him, all he talks about is how his favorite great-grandson wonít come visit him." Kelly had no idea. "Kevin, I'm so sorry. I -- I'm so sorry about everything. You have to know that -- that what happened wasnít because of anything you said or because I wanted a baby. I cared about Duke because he was your son. And because he was my friend." Kevin knows that she is telling the truth. "Look, I just want you to know that no matter what -- as awful as it was, I wasnít using him to make a baby." Kevin understands. "Yeah, well, I just -- I just wanted to say that I know I'm not blameless here. And as far as I'm concerned, we never have to talk about it again, ok? I wish you could just block it from your mind." Kelly would like that. "Oh, God, I wish we both could. But I'm afraid that's not possible."
"Look Jessica, I'm sorry, but I didnít know how much to buy, and I wanted to make sure that my baby girl had everything she needed." She doesn't care about all the work that he has gone to in order to make a nursery. "Yeah, well, donít hold your breath waiting for me to thank you. What? What is so funny?" He can't help laughing as he and Tess used to fight a lot when they first met just like he is doing now with Jessica. "Well, that's not surprising, because that's where I kept all my anger." Nash likes the fire in her. "Yeah, well, I donít have any problem getting angry on my own anymore." He isn't finding her as strong as she says she is. "You know, if this integration thing is working out so well for you, then why do I get the feeling that I'm having an effect on you?" She feels her reaction to him is due to the kidnapping. "You know, I donít care what I got to do, as long as I end up with Tess." Jessica has to wonder what he is really thinking lately. "I donít understand why I have to keep explaining this to you. I am the host personality. Tess is gone because I donít need her anymore. I have the life that I want, the life with Antonio, the life with Jamie, the life with my parents, ok? And there is no room in that life for you!" He hears her explaining it all away so neatly but things are not really that way, are they? "You know, Tess and I hopped on a train and went all the way across this country. I bought a vineyard without even seeing it. Now, where in that very neat little life of yours is there space for the part of you that still wants to do stuff like that, huh?" Jessica can do just fine without the vineyard and all that goes with it. "Taking care of Brennan and waiting for Antonio to come home to you?" Her life isn't as boring to her as he thinks. "Yeah, well, it wouldnít be enough for me. And I'll tell you, it sure wouldnít be enough for Tess. You know, Tess could teach you a lot about being in love. Tess and I -- we didnít make room for each other. We gave up everything to be with each other, because that's what love is. I didnít have to teach Tess how to be in love, but if I got to teach you about love, well, I'll be more than happy to oblige."
Detective McKeon comes to Antonio asking if he has found what he was looking for. "No, no. I was kind of hoping that maybe Brennan showed up with what he stole from me, but it's pretty obvious he hasnít been here." Detective McKeon suggests Antonio checking in with Nash's lawyer. Detective McKeon hasn't got the name of the lawyer. He only knows him as some hot shot from the east.
Antonio gets a call. Claudia wants to know how Antonio is doing with his investigation. He tells that he hasn't found anything and that he hasn't reported this to the police yet. "I couldnít. I donít even know if she's Tess again. The last thing we want are cops getting involved. That could make it even worse for Jessica. Why are you calling me?" She has an idea. "I was thinking, I might know where Nash took Jessica and the baby."
Michael sees that Evangeline is in great shape. "Yeah. I just found out about the other surgery -- the one on my eyes?" Michael explains. "It was a tough call, but Simmons is the best in his field and he was available." Evangeline is dying to get the bandages off and check to see if the surgery worked. "Well, Dr. Simmons had to go to Philadelphia, but he called me on the phone. He told me that I could remove your bandages tomorrow." She thinks about how everyone else said that she wouldn't be able to see again. "Well, Todd just kept on looking and looking until he found a doctor that didnít say that." That sounds like Todd to Evangeline. She will have to thank him for all that he has done.
"Simmons, what the hell are you doing? You're in Philadelphia -- terrific. You know, I didnít put all those zeros on your check so you could screw around in Philadelphia right after the operation. That's too bad. Because I donít want Evangeline in the hands of Spencer Truman or some -- some kid out of med. school. I donít care how much it cost me."
Kevin feels like Kelly can't get past what has happened to them. It is hard for
her. She did a terrible thing and he saved her life. It is hard for to accept
that. "Well, I guess I just have to find a better way to mourn my son -- that's
all. I canít think about the way he died. I just -- I just have to remember how
much I loved him. Oh, God, Kelly, I didnít mean to make you cry, I really
didnít. Just -- what can I --"
Jessica has settled in with the baby. Nash hopes that he has gotten everything that they need. He even brought her some of Jessica's things from Napa. "No. I am not wearing those clothes. It was bad enough when I would wake up from a blackout and be in some strange outfit." Nash wants her to relax about the clothes. "Tess is not strange and she's not an illness. We fell in love, we fell in love right here, in this city, and that was real." Jessica her herself to think about. "I'm real, too, Nash -- every part of me. Did it ever occur to you that I'm not just something holding you back from the woman that you love? Is it ok if I use the bathroom? Is that allowed?"
When alone, Jessica thinks to herself that she has to get back to Antonio somehow.
Antonio thanks Claudia for the information that she has provided him.
Claudia thinks to herself how pushing Antonio in the right direction was almost too easy.
Bruce answers his phone.
"Mr. Bartlett, this is Napa PD We're just getting ready to close the Reston case and I was hoping that maybe I could ask your client a few questions." Bruce is surprised to hear someone calling about this. "Well, I was under the impression that was already closed. What kind of questions?" When Bruce hears the questions that the man has are only routine, he is only too glad to comply with the officer's wishes.
"Hey, Rex, where'd you put the extra candles? Hmm. This is Rex's," Adriana is looking around.
Rex finds her snooping around. "I was just looking for some candles. What's the matter with you?" He just thought that she was getting ready for bed and not looking around. "I wanted to make it nice in here. You're acting like I murdered somebody." He really doesn't appreciate her looking through his stuff. She saw the way that he grabbed his laptop to keep him away from it and that disturbs her. She wonders what it is that he doesn't want her to see. "I just donít want you checking your emails and freaking out again." That makes no sense. "No. No. My emails come to my cell phone anyway. You were afraid I'd boot up your computer and see something I wasnít supposed to see. What? Is it a case, the thing with Claudia Reston?" He would really like her to drop this whole issue. "No. You're keeping secrets from me again and I want to know why."
Kevin can't talk about this anymore. Kelly has something to say but he doesn't want to hear it. "I'm just as much to blame as you are. I canít imagine having to make the decision that you had to make. It was an impossible decision. I canít imagine it." Kevin remembers that time. "I just keep telling myself that I believed that you were in worse shape than Duke. And I wasnít acting out on how betrayed I felt. She wishes that she could comfort him now. "Well, you canít, ok? Because every time I try to see Duke's face, all I see is that night at the rectory. And the two of you. I donít know, maybe someday I'll be able to put that memory behind me." She knows that can't happen. "What if you canít? What if something happened and it wouldnít let you? Would you be ok?"
"Just tell me where I could reach Brennan and I'll get out of your hair." Bruce gets suspicious. "I'm not giving out information about my client until I've checked you out." Antonio tells what Nash did and Bruce says that he doesn't believe the kidnapping story. "Look, cut the crap, all right? They're not in Llanview, they're not in Napa." Bruce suddenly gets a clue, guessing that this is Antonio and not some cop on the case. "Look, I'll tell you what, Bartlett -- you're aiding and abetting a kidnapper. So you tell me what I need to know or I'll make sure you never practice law again." Bruce maintains that he has no idea what Antonio is talking about and hangs up.
"It's hard to see the stars in Manhattan. It's because they leave a lot of
lights on at night. But they're there. Ah. Yeah. Your mommy loved them anyway.
We'd go out on the fire escape and we'd pretend we could see the constellations
and I'd tell her all their stories. But your mommy said that any star that
wouldnít shine on Manhattan wasnít worth seeing." Brennan coos at her father as
he talks to her about her mother. "Oh. It's ok. But then I got her out to
California and she saw stars, and she finally admitted that the stars were worth
it. No. It's ok. It's ok. You know what? Your mommy is a little bit like a star
in Manhattan. I know. You canít see her, but it doesnít mean she's not there.
And with any luck, some morning you are going to open your pretty blue eyes and
there she will be, clear as a star in the sky."
"Come on, Nash. Pick up your messages. Listen, Antonio Vega just called me at the office looking for you. He's on to us. Take Jessica and that kid and get the hell out of my place tonight."
Nash explains why he picked up Brennan when he realizes that Jessica has been watching he and Brennan. "No, that's ok. That was beautiful, what you said about the stars, and you're right -- they're always there." Nash surely knows that. "Come here, puddin'. Oh, you get to sleep right next to mama tonight! Yes, you do." Nash tells her they will talk more in the morning. She supposes that she has no choice as he has control of everything anyway. Brennan fusses. "I know, I know. We're going, we're going, we're going," Jessica tells the child. Nash stops her for a minute.
"I was just telling Evangeline that Dr. Simmons told me that I could take her bandages off tomorrow." Cristian and Evangeline have no idea how the surgery really went and the suspense is killing them all. "Because we donít know anything. If it makes you feel any better, I'm praying that when I take those bandages off, you'll be looking up at my ugly mug," Michael says.
A nurse tells Michael that Dr. Simmons called. "He wanted to let you know that he'll be here tomorrow morning to remove Ms. Williamson's bandages." Michael makes a note of that and turns back to Evangeline. "Oh. Well, he's not as handsome as I am, but hopefully you'll be able to be the judge of that Evangeline." Michael leaves now.
Cristian turns all his attention to Evangeline now. "I am better now that you're here. I meant what I said, Cris -- I'm falling in love with you. But if you ever lie to me again, I will walk away and not look back." He isn't sure what she is referring to when she talks about him lying to her. "Come on, Cris. I told you, I'm -- I'm blind. I'm not stupid. You didnít make a truce with Todd. You didnít shake his hand." Cristian tries to explain why he can't deal with Todd, but Evangeline won't listen to any of it. She wants him to just drop the subject. "Ok, well, I'm giving you the handshake I didnít give him. How's that?" Evangeline has no idea how she is going to be able to sleep knowing her bandages are coming off the following day. Cristian offers to tell Evangeline a story. "Well, this particular story is about this strong and very beautiful princess named Evangeline who doesnít take no for an answer, doesnít listen to men, but she is gorgeous." She would much rather be a tiger than a princess. Cristian understands and will let her be a tiger if she wants.
Rex sees that he has overreacted again. "I guess this hasnít been much easier for you than it's been for me." Adriana wants to know what got Rex upset. He doesn't want to talk about it. She gets angry and decides that she wants to go to bed now. He doesn't want her to go to bed angry. "I was right to keep quiet about Todd when he escaped. He was innocent. And the thing with the laptop -- nothing like that." Adriana wants more details but he won't give her any.
Kevin doesn't get what Kelly is trying to get at. She just really wants Kevin to stop being angry with she and her son for what went on. "Well, Duke and I never got to work things out. But the anger I felt -- well, it's just turned into this unbelievable sadness. So I guess in some way this is all over. They tore down what was left of the rectory, so there's -- there's no physical reminder of that night left. So maybe now I can start trying to get past this. Thing is, life goes on, you know, whether you want it to or not."
"Come on, Antonio. I gave you what you need, now you do the same for me. Find Nash and Jessica," Claudia prays.
Antonio is on his way to rescue Jess and the baby.
Jessica sees that Nash is hanging around for some reason. She asks him what he wants. "I just want to show you something. Come here. It's ok, come on. Come on. Come on. Look. Right there. One little star managed to shine through." She sees it but isn't that impressed. "You know what I'd wish for. I wish to be back with my family." Funny, Nash has that exact same wish for himself.
