At Anna’s hideout, EJ watches Sami at her place via her webcam. She watches the video of Sydney and sobs. EJ flashes back to burning the ransom note so that Sami can’t show it to Rafe. He comes back to the present, saying that it’s now time to see if Sami can keep her word.

Sami watches the video and moans, saying that she can’t believe Sydney is still alive. Rafe walks in just then and asks Sami what she said. She looks up, startled.

Nathan heads into his and Stephanie’s cabin at Alpine Valley and explains that the bill has been paid. Stephanie grumbles and continues packing. Nathan shows her a photo taken of her on one of the slopes, but Stephanie thinks she looks demented. Nathan disagrees, saying that she can really ski well. He picks up his coat and notices his lift pass attached to it. He notes that he really hates guys that return from skiing trips with their lift pass still clipped to their jackets, as it seems as if they just want to show off. Stephanie, uninterested, suggests he just tell people he went skiing, but Nathan stops her, saying that he is keeping the pass as a souvenir of the best trip he ever had. He offers to help Stephanie pack, but she says that isn’t the problem. Stephanie then flashes back to ripping up the note Melanie wrote Nathan. Nathan wonders what the problem is. He then admits he doesn’t want to pack, because he doesn’t want admit to himself that they’re really leaving. Stephanie sighs, telling Nathan that they need to talk about Melanie.

At the pier, Carly calls Daniel and leaves him a message, saying that she was wondering if he talked to Melanie, and asking him to call her back, even though she knows he is angry with her. She then adds that she thinks Daniel was right to not tell Melanie that he is her father right away, as they need to be concerned with how much information Melanie can handle right now. Carly hangs up with a sighs and asks herself who she is kidding, as she is really just concerned with what Melanie will think of her when she finds out about another swell piece of her mother’s history.

Melanie wakes up in her room at the hospital to find Daniel sitting by her side. She grins, admitting that she had a dream someone was staring at her. She yawns, admitting that it take a few minutes for her to wake up. Daniel jokes that he felt that way during his first E.R. rotation. He takes Melanie’s pulse. She asks abruptly if his jokes are his way of stalling from telling her something bad. Daniel claims that isn’t true, but Melanie asks if he sure, since he looks so worried--as if he is bracing himself to give her some bad news. Daniel sighs.

Sami tells Rafe that she didn’t hear him come in. EJ chuckles from Anna’s hideout, warning her that Big Brother is watching. Rafe asks Sami what is going on and if something happened. She admits something did. EJ glares.

Chloe heads into the pub and greets Philip, who is talking to Max over the phone about Melanie. He hangs up and Chloe remarks that he seems happy. Philip admits he is, and that Max is, too. Chloe figures he would be, since he is the only family Melanie has other than the mother that shot her. Philip chuckles, saying he thought he had a complicated family. He then asks Chloe how she is doing. She says she is doing much better thanks to him, and counsels him to finish his food, as he can’t just live on coffee alone. Philip jokes about how maternal she is, then stops short, apologizing. Chloe says it’s alright, and begs Philip not to feel as if he has to walk on eggshells around her--especially since he has been so good to her and has talked to her about her problems. Philip asks how things are going with Daniel. Chloe admits that they haven’t had a chance to talk, but she thought about what Philip said, and he was right--Daniel is going through the same thing she is, and he’s also facing that he will never have his own child.

Daniel apologizes for worrying Melanie, explaining that her recovery can actually be categorized as remarkable. Melanie jokes that it’s probably because of all the peace and calm she’s been getting. Daniel sighs, admitting she has been through hell the last few days. Melanie smiles, saying she thought getting shot at her wedding was the most interesting thing that would happen to her this week, but it turns out that Carly was just getting started. Daniel smiles wanly, admitting that she could say that. Melanie, concerned, asks if something happened to him. Daniel says nothing did, really. Melanie wonders why he is still being so serious then, if it’s true that she is fine. Daniel says it’s just because he is a doctor, and they tend to be serious. Melanie thanks God for that, since she wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Daniel. His mouth drops open. Melanie, astonished, asks what she said.

EJ grumbles that Sami just made a very big mistake. Sami stammers that EJ just sent her a video of Sydney that Nicole had taken a while ago. Rafe wants to see it, too. Sami hesitates. EJ growls, “Don’t you dare.”

Nathan sighs, wondering why they have to talk about Melanie all the time. Stephanie claims that the subject seems off-limits with Nathan, and that worries her. Nathan wonders why. Stephanie explains that he wouldn’t mind talking about Melanie if he were really over her, and the way he refuses to discuss makes Stephanie think that things aren’t settled between them. Nathan reminds Stephanie that it is settled, as Melanie married Philip and they’re probably halfway to Timbuktu, or wherever they’re going for their honeymoon. Stephanie grumps that they’ll come back eventually. Nathan assure Stephanie that Melanie is his past, and she is his future. She wonders if he really means that. Nathan vows to prove it to her and pulls her in for a kiss.

Philip is on the phone, shouting at someone that he won’t help them since the guy saved his wife’s life. He hangs up angrily. Chloe asks what’s wrong, and Philip explains that the hospital board wants to take disciplinary action against Daniel for letting Carly into Melanie’s room. Chloe groans, telling Philip that Carly is like a one-woman demolition derby. Philip says he is sorry, but reminds Chloe that Daniel knew about the restraining order. Chloe snaps that Carly did, too, and she can’t believe that Daniel has to pay because Carly broke the law. Philip soothes her, reminding her that they don’t know that. He then promises to do everything he can. Chloe thanks him. Philip then says that he had better get back to the hospital to see Melanie. He asks Chloe not to worry about Daniel, as Philip is sure that he will be fine. Chloe sighs as Philip heads off, saying that if he is, it won’t be thanks to Carly.

Rafe wants to see the video, but Sami shuts it off, saying that she doesn’t think he should upset himself that way. Rafe angrily reminds her that she just watched it, but Sami claims she got too upset and had to turn it off. Rafe retorts that when he walked in it seemed to him as if Sami’s eyes were filled with light and hope for the first time in a long time. Sami claims she was just remembering Sydney. Rafe sighs and starts to head off, but Sami stops him, telling him there is something she has to tell him. EJ glares, snapping at Sami not to dare blow this after she’s come so far.

Daniel sniffles and rubs his eyes, saying there’s something in his eye. Melanie thinks he is in a weird mood today. Daniel gets up, saying that he had better go weird out another one of his patients, but Melanie says she doesn’t buy his excuse that he is a serous man. She wonders if whatever is bothering him has something to do with Carly. Daniel wonders why she would say that. Melanie claims it’s because Carly has ruined everyone else’s life, so Melanie figures she probably had a go at Daniel’s too. She adds that Daniel usually defends Carly when she insults her, but his time he chimed right in. Daniel claims he is just tired. Melanie replies that she knows Carly has Bo eating out of the palm of her hand and wonders if Carly has something on Daniel, too. Daniel says that isn’t it, exactly. Before Melanie can question him further, Philip walks in, glad that Melanie is awake. She asks ruefully if he has gotten any sleep, but Philip begs her not to worry about him. Daniel starts to head off, but Philip asks to speak to him for a moment first. The two head out to the nurses’ station, and Philip explains that he heard the board might discipline Daniel for letting Carly into Melanie’s room. Daniel sighs, asking Philip not to tell Melanie. Philip agrees, and vows to have Daniel’s back, as he knows about everything that Daniel has done for Melanie. Daniel shakes his head, saying that actually, Philip doesn’t know everything.

Carly heads into the pub and greets Chloe. Chloe glares, saying pointedly that she was just thinking about Carly. Carly is surprised at the coincidence, since she has been trying to get in touch with Daniel. Chloe scoffs, saying that she thinks Carly has done enough damage. Carly stares, confused. Chloe snaps at her not to play innocent, as she knows everything.

Rafe asks Sami what happened. She stammers. EJ curses and takes out his phone. He calls Sami and interrupts her conversation with Rafe. EJ asks if she is alone, but Sami says she isn’t. EJ sighs, asking Sami to stay calm. He then tells her that he made the ransom drop, and everything went fine. He adds that he knows she probably has a million questions, but she can’t stay on the phone too long or Rafe will get suspicious. Sami agrees. EJ adds that he knows it’s difficult for her to keep this from Rafe, but they can’t have a repeat of what happened last time. Sami says she doesn’t need EJ to keep reminding her of that. EJ then tells Sami that he has been feeling agitated ever since he made the drop, and could really use someone to talk to. He asks Sami if she can make an excuse to drop by the mansion.

Philip cuddles Melanie in bed and asks her to imagine being on a beach in Greece. Melanie sighs, saying denial isn’t something she’s good at, and she can’t imagine a beach and that crazy woman shooting her at the same time. She adds that she keeps thinking about Carly, and how she has a father out there, and how that infuriating woman won’t tell her who he is. Melanie thinks that can only mean one thing--that her father is worse than Trent, a thing she didn’t even imagine was possible.

Carly tells Chloe that she doesn’t think she knows what she is talking about. Chloe snaps that Carly has a pretty good idea. Carly replies that she didn’t realize that Daniel had already told Chloe. Chloe retorts that Daniel didn’t tell her, as he is trying to protect her. Carly wonders how she found out, but Chloe explodes, asking angrily if that is what really matters to her after she has ruined life after life since her return to Salem. Carly suggests she and Chloe take a walk and talk things over. Chloe replies that she doesn’t like Carly, and has no desire to talk things over with her. Carly sighs, saying that she understands Chloe is upset. Chloe agrees, saying that Daniel has finally found a life he loves after years of pain and suffering and it infuriates her that Carly has come back and destroyed it. Carly doubts that this will destroy his life. Chloe thinks it will, and asks Carly how she can live with herself after what she’s done and demands to know if Carly even gave Daniel a second thought. Carly says that she did, of course, and that she thinks it’s horrible that Daniel only found out the truth after so many years had gone by. Chloe, confused, asks what she is talking about. Carly doesn’t seem to pick up on the confusion and assures Chloe that she and Daniel will be able to work through this. She rambles on about how she believes in a higher power and that she thinks it’s more than coincidence that ‘she’ knew Daniel--knew him and respected him. She reminds Chloe that she saw how hard Daniel worked to save Melanie’s life, and she is sure he loved Melanie long before he knew she was his daughter. Chloe gapes.

EJ asks Sami to be strong for Sydney’s sake. She says she has to go, and abruptly hangs up. Rafe asks who that was, and Sami admits it was EJ. She stammers that she promised to drop Johnny off a little early. Rafe offers to do it for her, but Sami claims that she needs to do this on her own, as it would be good for her to spend some time with Johnny and get out of the house. Rafe agrees and Sami kisses him. She grabs her coat and purse and heads off. Rafe stares after her suspiciously.

EJ cuddles Sydney and tells her that her mother did very well, and did what she was told for a change. He explains that he has to go now, but that he’ll be back soon, and then they’ll be together for a long time. EJ grins, saying that Sami and Rafe won’t know what hit them. EJ calls out for Anna, telling her that Sydney is awake.

Rafe mutters to himself that it doesn’t sound as if that call was about Johnny. He opens her laptop and hunts for the video she was watching, wondering why EJ would send it to her. He adds to himself hat Sami also seemed very nervous. Just then, Rafe gets a call. He takes it, listens, then tells the person they’ve done good work, promising to be right there. Rafe hangs up and heads out the door.

Sami rushes into the DiMera mansion and asks EJ excitedly if he saw anything when he made the drop. EJ says he didn’t. Sami sighs in disappointment, but admits she didn’t think he would. She adds that she knows this is crazy, but she really feels like they might get Sydney back today. EJ reminds her that they can’t be too hopeful, as they aren’t even sure that Sydney is alive. Sami thinks the video proves it, but EJ thinks they need to keep their wits about them. He again reminds her of how important it is that they don’t involve Rafe in this. Sami snaps that she knows that, and doesn’t need to be reminded. EJ apologizes, saying he knows she didn’t tell Rafe anything on purpose, but he needs to know if she thinks Rafe suspects something. Sami replies that she thinks he does.

Stephanie and Nathan lie in bed together. He asks if she thinks Maggie would be disappointed if he gave up being a doctor to become a ski instructor. Stephanie jokes that he should learn how to ski first. He throws a pillow at her. Stephanie giggles, and reminds him of how much they’ve talked about not wanting to go back to Salem. She asks if his fantasy life involves living in the country. Nathan says that his fantasy just involves Stephanie, so the cast is much more important than the location. He then adds that real life is intruding, as they’re going to be paying for an extra night if they stay much longer. Stephanie thinks they should, especially since Nathan doesn’t have to go back to work until tomorrow. She asks him to really think about it as Nathan checks his phone. He gasps, telling Stephanie that he has twelve messages from his grandmother. Nathan panics, sure that something is wrong.

Chloe asks Carly what she just said. Carly stammers that she said that she thinks Chloe and Daniel can work through this. Shaken, Chloe says that she meant the part about Daniel being Melanie’s father. Carly turns white, saying she thought Chloe knew. Chloe replies that what she knew was that Daniel might be facing disciplinary action for letting Carly into Melanie’s room. Carly gapes. Chloe assumes this means that Carly told Daniel that he was Melanie’s father. She tells Chloe how sorry she is. Chloe says she can’t believe Daniel bought it, and guesses angrily that Carly lied to Daniel about it to get in to see Melanie. Carly claims that isn’t true. Chloe snaps that she won’t let Carly con her the way she has conned Daniel. Daniel heads into the pub just as Chloe hisses that Carly will never get her to believe that Daniel is Melanie’s father. Aghast and angry, Daniel asks Carly if she told Chloe. Chloe stares up at him in shock.

EJ shouts at Sami that she has blown it. He adds in a rage that she must have said something to tip off Rafe. Sami yells back that she is doing the best that she can, and that Rafe is suspicious because of EJ, and because of the fact that he is an FBI agent and was just born that way. EJ reminds her of what happened the last time, and says they have one last chance. He wonders if she realizes what that means. Sami says she does, of course. EJ snaps that if this doesn’t work out, and if they don’t see their daughter again, then it will be because of that man.

Nathan calls Maggie and leaves her a message letting her know that they are on their way back. He hangs up with a sigh, worrying about the fact that she didn’t answer. Stephanie is sure she is fine, as they left Maggie with a lot of people around her, but Nathan reminds her that Mickey is gone and Melanie moved out. Stephanie assures him that they are leaving right now, and will be able to get home soon and find out what is going on. Nathan calms down a bit and thanks her, telling her he’s had a wonderful time here, but now they have to go. Stephanie agrees. Nathan heads out the door. Stephanie follows, taking one last wistful look at the cabin.

Philip thinks Melanie’s father might be a great guy. Melanie doesn’t think the odds are good, considering he hooked up with a husband-stealing piece of trash. Philip disagrees, saying the odds are great. Melanie scoffs that he has awful taste in women, and doesn’t use protection, so his track record isn’t good thus far. Philip reminds Melanie gently that she is tough and smart like Carly, but she’s also honest and kind, even if she doesn’t let other people see it. He has to wonder where she gets that from.

Carly explains unhappily that by the way Chloe was talking, she thought she knew. Daniel demands to know who else she told. Carly admits that Bo knows. Daniel asks sarcastically if the two were just sharing a little pillow talk, but Carly explains that Bo has known everything about the situation since she returned to Salem. Daniel tells Carly to get the hell out of here and to keep her mouth shut. He asks in a rage if she can handle that. Cowed, Carly apologizes. Daniel threatens that her life won’t be worth living if Melanie finds out from anyone other than him. Carly nods and heads off quickly. Daniel sits down across from Chloe with a sigh. Tearfully, she snaps that his dreams have come true, and he is finally a father.

Melanie giggles, saying that she was just picturing Mother’s Day, and asks Philip jokingly how he feels about taking Carly, Vivian, and Kate out for lunch. She thinks they’d have to go through a metal detector. Philip admits that he’d go as far as getting a food taster, and ensuring that the silverware was plastic. Melanie chuckles, saying she’ll just take Maggie out. She then tells Philip that she ought to be happy, as she has him and Maggie, and that is a lot. Philip thinks more people than that care about her, and says that he really thinks that Daniel cares for her more than just as a patient. Melanie reminds Philip that she helped save Chloe’s life. Philip jokes that he forgot she was a hero. Just then, a nurse comes in to take her vitals. Melanie notices that she is new, and the two make small talk. Philip heads off to get Melanie a coffee from the café. The nurse notices Melanie’s name and assumes she’s family to the people that run the research center. Melanie nods. The woman thinks she’s lucky to have a fiancée that is both rich and handsome. Melanie agrees and tells the nurse she also used to work here. She asks about one of the other doctors, Nathan Horton, and if he has asked about her, but the nurse doesn’t think she has met him. Melanie explains that he’s young, with dark hair, and is handsome, but the woman doesn’t recognize the description, either. Melanie frowns. The nurse asks if something is wrong. Melanie sighs, admitting that she was just wondering why Nathan hasn’t come to see her.

At the Java Café, Nathan tells Stephanie that he is going to stop by the hospital and keep trying to get hold of Maggie. Stephanie suggests that he check to see if Maggie is at the hospital. Nathan agrees, admitting that he needs to check his schedule and go over his caseloads, too. Stephanie groans that vacation is officially over. Nathan agrees that it is, but that now that Melanie and Philip are gone, they don’t have to leave Salem to be together, and can even indulge in public displays affection. Nathan kisses her. Stephanie wishes he didn’t have to leave. Nathan promises to be back as soon as he catches up on what he missed while he was gone. Stephanie nods and Nathan heads off. She sighs.

Daniel explains that he just found out last night, and has been waiting for the right time to tell her. Chloe thinks he must be very happy. Daniel says that he is actually overwhelmed and furious with Carly. Chloe realizes that Carly was telling the truth, and asks Daniel if it’s true. He thinks so. Chloe asks if he loved Carly. Daniel says it wasn’t like that and that it wasn’t serious between him and Carly. Chloe thinks it is now. Daniel agrees. Chloe tearfully remarks that Melanie was so nice to her when she was in the hospital, and now it makes sense that she was so good at her job, since she has two parents for doctors. Daniel hopes this won’t change things between him and Chloe, but Chloe thinks that remark is a little naive since he is a father now, and things are never going to be the same.

Carly runs into Rafe at the pier. She finds him staring into the water and jokes that she hopes he isn’t planning on taking a dive, as she doesn’t want to have to fish him out again. Rafe thinks Carly looks like she is in about a good a mood as he is. Carly nods, saying that when people talk about having ‘one of those days’ she understands, as she is having one of those lives. Carly then apologizes for complaining and explains that Bo told her about the baby. She asks how Sami is holding up. Rafe isn’t sure. Carly thinks she must be reeling. Rafe admits that one minute she is a mess, and the next minute, she’s a mess. Rafe says quietly that he knows something is going on.

Sami nervously asks EJ how long he thinks he it will be. EJ isn’t sure, but admits that it could take a while. Sami tells EJ how scared she is. He squeezes her arm as she admits that she wishes Rafe were here. EJ recoils. Sami explains that Rafe is her rock, and it’s hard for her to do this alone. EJ kisses the top of her head, smiling and saying that she isn’t alone--she has him.

Philip heads into the Java Café and runs into Stephanie. Shocked, she asks what he is doing here.

Nathan heads into the hospital and over to the nurses’ station. The new nurse asks if she can help him, and Nathan explains that he is a doctor here. He introduces himself, and the woman says that a patient in room 306 was just asking about him. Nathan asks who that would be. The woman says it’s Kiriakis--the gunshot victim. Surprised, Nathan asks if Philip was shot, but the nurse says it was his wife. Nathan dashes over to Melanie’s room and flies inside. Melanie catches sight of him and grins sheepishly.

Carly asks Rafe if he thinks Sami needs to see a professional. Rafe says he isn’t sure, admitting that the last thing Carly needs to be thinking about right now is his problems. Carly says that she thinks Sami is lucky to have Rafe, but Rafe says that he doesn’t seem to be able to take care of Sami anymore. Carly wouldn’t say that, but Rafe sighs, saying that he just isn’t sure of much of anything anymore.

Sami apologizes to EJ, admitting that she should be stronger than this. EJ says he understands the kind of pressure she is under right now. Sami still thinks she ought to try to be strong for Sydney. She adds that she wants to thank EJ. He doesn’t think she has to do that, but Sami realizes that; she just wants to. She adds that it means everything to her to see all that he has done to help bring Sydney home. She adds that it’s also nice to see the guy she has always known was inside him come out again.

Carly tells Bo, “There's only one person who can take care of Vivian, and that's me.”

Daniel rages at Vivian, “Cut the crap. And you listen to me.”

Nathan tells Melanie, “I think you still care about me.”
