At the pier, Carly gets a phone call from Philip, letting her know that Melanie wants to see her. She hangs up and gives Bo the news, but he shakes his head, saying that she can’t do this. Carly insists on going, but Bo reminds her that her bail could be revoked, and that she could be extradited back to Lawrence’s country. Carly doesn’t care and claims she’ll risk it. Bo again insists that she can’t do this. Carly sighs, saying she knows Bo can’t condone her violating the terms of her bail, so she’ll just go see Melanie alone. Bo refuses to allow that, and agrees to go with her. The two head off for the hospital.

In Melanie’s room at the hospital, Philip asks her to get some rest, and promises to let her know the moment Carly arrives. Melanie closes her eyes and drifts off. She dreams about the moment Carly shot her, and how she collapsed on the ground as Carly screamed. Startled, Melanie wakes up. Philip guesses that she had a nightmare and tells her that he can’t let her do this. He takes out his phone, saying that he is going to call Carly and tell her that Melanie isn’t ready for this, but Melanie grabs the phone away, asking him not to do so.

At the DiMera mansion, Stefano thanks someone over the phone for letting him know. Stunned, he hangs up and stares off into space as Kate breezes in to let Stefano know the good news about Melanie. Stefano buries his face in his hands and sighs. Kate guesses this has something to do with Sydney. Stefano sighs again.

At the police station, Hope works at a desk as a fellow officer greets her. He’s glad Hope is back, but is surprised to see her behind a desk. She explains that she has paperwork to catch up on, and that she’s waiting on a new service weapon, as her old one has been taken as evidence. Just then, Hope’s desk phone rings. She takes the call, listens, and then tells the person that she can’t comment on the Sydney DiMera kidnapping case. Hope listens as the person interrupts. She then gasps, saying that that can’t be true.

In his own office, Rafe flashes back to returning Sydney to Sami, and Sami laughing and holding Sydney in her arms. He comes back to the present and tried to pick up the phone, but bursts into tears. Rafe sobs brokenly over Sydney’s photo as Sami walks in and watches sympathetically.

At her hideout, Anna tells EJ that she can’t imagine what everyone is going through thinking this little girl is--She breaks off, saying she can’t even say it. EJ bounces Sydney in his arms and snaps at her not to say it, then. Anna starts to sink into a chair, but EJ informs her that he needs her to get Sydney’s things ready. Surprised, Anna asks if he is planning to leave now. EJ nods, saying that he and Sydney are leaving this cottage and Salem for good.

Kate puts her arms around Stefano, asking what happened. He stammers, telling Kate tearfully that they found Sydney’s dress in the river, and it was bloody and torn. Kate gasps as Stefano bursts into tears, sobbing that the FBI has finished their investigation, and they believe that Sydney is dead. He bawls as Kate tries to comfort him.

EJ tells Anna that he is going to visit Sami and explain that he needs a little break from it all. He’ll take Johnny with him for moral support, and then he’ll come back here and get Sydney, so the three of them can begin their permanent vacation. Anna sighs, saying that Sami will be permanently heartbroken--never knowing that her little girl is still alive.

Rafe continues to sob. Sami steps into his office and gently calls his name. Rafe looks up and wipes his eyes, sniffling.

Carly and Bo head into Melanie’s room at the hospital. Carly thank Philip for calling, but he replies curtly that it wasn’t his idea. Carly swears not to upset Melanie. Bo suggests that he and Philip give the two some privacy, but Philip refuses to leave Melanie alone with Carly. Carly waves Bo off, saying it’s fine, and he heads off, saying that he will be right outside. Just as he leaves and closes the door, Hope rushes over, thanking God she found him. Worried, Bo asks what is wrong.

Rafe asks Sami how long she has been here. She replies quietly that she has been here long enough to see how wrong she was. She tearfully adds that Rafe is grieving for their little girl, too, and she should have known that he was just trying to be strong for her. Sami bursts into tears, saying again that she should have known.

Shocked, Bo asks Hope how she found out about Sydney. She explains that she was at the station when a reporter called asking about the bloody clothes fond in the river, and the DNA test proving that the blood was Sydney’s. Bo asks if Sami knows about this. Hope nods, saying that she does, as far as she knows. She sighs, saying that she can’t help but think of their ordeal with Ciara. Bo hugs her, agreeing that Ciara is only with them thanks to the grace of God.

Carly takes Melanie’s hand in hers and tells her softly that her mother is here. Melanie snaps at her to never call herself that again.

Bo sighs, telling Hope that all he wants to do right now is hug his little girl and never let her go. Hope suggests that the three of them have dinner together later, and she offers to pick Ciara up after her shift is over. Bo sighs, saying that sounds great, and he wishes he could go, but he can’t, as he has to stay here. Hope guesses Melanie is in the room nearby, and that Carly is with her. Bo doesn’t reply. Hope scoffs, saying that first he posted Carly’s bail, and now he’s helping her break the law, too. Bo reminds Hope of everything Carly has been through, and how she almost lost her daughter a second time. Hope claims that her heart goes out to Carly as a mother, but she can’t understand Bo, as he could lose his job over something like this or even go to jail. Bo doesn’t answer. Hope, aghast, guesses that he doesn’t even care. She adds angrily that Bo would probably sacrifice everything just to ingratiate himself to Carly. Bo scoffs as Hope declares that Bo has been playing hero to Carly ever since she came back to town, and that he has sacrificed everything and everyone to do so. Hope glares, saying that she hopes to hell Carly was worth it. She then storms off. Bo sighs.

Melanie snaps that Carly has never been a mother to her before, and she doesn’t need her to start acting like one now. Carly asks if Melanie called her back here to tell her that, but Melanie says that she wants some answers, and that she needs to know how she came into this world, and who she is.

Sami tells Rafe how sorry she is that she asked him to leave earlier. Rafe riffles through some paperwork as Sami begs him to look at her. She adds that she knows he just wanted to be strong for her, but she was upset because she just wanted him to hold her. Rafe tearfully tells Sami that he broke his promise to her--his promise that he would bring Sydney back home. Sami reminds Rafe that he just did what he thought was right, but Rafe doesn’t think he could have been right if he ended up letting Sami down. Sami tells him that he can’t take this all on his own shoulders, and assures him that they’re all responsible for what happened to Sydney, as the all played a part in it. Rafe nods as Sami adds that guilt and regret won’t bring Sydney back to them.

Stefano sobs that he did all he could to help with the search, even thought his bastard son was trying to push him away. Kate tries to soothe him, saying that of course he did all he could. Stefano tells Kate brokenly that in his heart, he really felt that Sydney would come back, and that whoever had her was taking care of her. Stefano bawls, wondering how this could happen, and how he could have been so wrong.

Anna cuddles Sydney, telling her how much she is going to miss her. EJ wonders where this maternal instinct was when Carrie was born. Anna replies that she always knew Carrie would be better off without her. EJ scoffs, saying that she is probably right. Anna reminds EJ that Sami’s children mean everything to her. EJ admits he knows Sami is a good mother, but he’s not going to have his children torn between two families. He adds that he wants his children to have a very strong sense of what family they belong to--the DiMera family.

Hope heads into the Kiriakis mansion. Victor greets her, saying that he thought she was at work. Hope replies that she is working, and that she has some questions for Victor. Victor assumes they’re about Melanie. Hope nods, saying that Victor had better answer them truthfully.

Melanie tells Philip that she thinks Carly will be more honest if they have some time alone. She adds viciously that she wants to get this over with so that she never has to see Carly again. Philip agrees, and tells Melanie that he will be right outside. He heads outside, where Bo asks him how it is going in there. Philip explains that Melanie wanted to speak to Carly alone. Bo asks how she is doing, and Philip admits that she is still weak. Bo asks how he is. Philip admits he is mad as hell--at Vivian, at Carly, and at Bo.

Melanie tells Carly that she had a mother. Her name was Jane, she was married to her father, Trent, and she died when she was a baby. Carly says she knows that, but what she never told Melanie is that Jane wasn’t her real mother. She adds quickly that she had no idea how much of a monster Trent was until Melanie told her. She swears that if she had known, she never would have let Trent raise her. She sobs, saying that she thought Melanie was safe, and that she could trust Trent. Melanie scoffs that Carly was wrong, and her whole life was a living hell because of it.

Sami tells Rafe tenderly that she can’t get through this or anything else without him. Rafe replies that he will be here for her as long as she needs him. Sami tells Rafe that she wants him around forever.

Kate tells Stefano that it is a terrible tragedy if Sydney is really dead, but she insists that Stefano cannot continue to blame himself. Stefano claims that he had everything planned perfectly, and despite Sami’s deception, he was going to see to it that EJ was able to raise his daughter and that they’d all be a family. Kate asks Stefano if the police know who did this, and why the woman wanted Sydney in the first place. Stefano says no, but he vows to make it his life’s mission to find this twisted, evil monster. He then swears angrily that God only know what will happen to them once he finds them.

EJ tells Sydney that he will be right back, and asks Anna to have everything ready so that he and Sydney can leave when he returns. Anna agrees, and EJ heads off. Anna sighs and cuddles Sydney, saying that her daddy thinks he knows everything, but she has a bad feeling that his plan is going to blow up in his face.

Victor asks Hope what she wants to talk about. Hope says that this is about Vivian, and how she tried to kill Melanie with a poisoned comb, and would have succeeded had Victor not switched combs. Victor thinks that sounds a bit far-fetched. Hope reminds him curtly that he left his receipt behind at the Brady pub--after he assured her that he wouldn’t allow Vivian to hurt Melanie. Victor replies that if he were Hope, he would concentrate on the person that pulled the trigger on Melanie and on her marriage--Carly Manning, her real enemy.

Philip reminds Bo that he knew Carly was Melanie’s mother, and didn’t say a thing to anyone. Bo sighs, saying that it wasn’t his secret to share. Philip wonders why it was a secret at all, and Bo explains that Carly feared that Vivian would come after Melanie if she knew the truth. Philip thinks that is all the more reason that Bo should have told him, as he could have protected his wife had he known she was in danger. Bo claims that he and Carly couldn’t risk anyone else finding out. Philip scoffs, asking Bo to look how well that turned out. Philip then vows that this won’t happen again, because he is going to start making the decisions, and he is going to make sure nothing bad ever happens to Melanie.

Carly claims that she only wanted to do what was best for Melanie, explaining that she was married to a very dangerous man when Melanie was conceived. Melanie scoffs, guessing she is the product of a sleazy love affair between Carly and Trent. Carly stammers, saying that she knows this is no excuse, but she was trapped in an abusive relationship. Melanie is surprised she didn’t realize that before she married Lawrence. Carly explains that Lawrence wasn’t always that way, and that getting sick changed him, making him cruel and paranoid. Melanie scoffs, asking if Carly’s solution was to cheat on him. Carly admits she isn’t proud of it, but that is what she did. She then explains that after Melanie was born, she was forced to give her away, as Lawrence was threatening to kill Melanie if she didn’t. Melanie demands to know how she is supposed to know any of this is true. Carly replies that they used her blood to give Melanie a transfusion. Melanie thinks that could be coincidence, but Carly says that less than one percent of the population shares their blood type. Melanie sulks that that still doesn’t prove anything. Carly agrees, but tells Melanie that she knows something that will prove it.

Kate says that it sounds to her as if there is no real proof that Sydney is actually gone. Stefano admits that there is nothing concrete, but the evidence is overwhelming. Just then, EJ walks in, guessing that Stefano heard the news. Stefano retorts that EJ is swine, and wonders how he could dare to not say anything about Sydney to him, instead letting an outsider break the news. EJ retorts that Stefano is an outsider, and then asks him to steel himself, as he is planning on taking a little trip with Johnny. Stefano curses at him in Italian. EJ snaps that Stefano’s words don’t mean anything and that there is nothing Stefano can do, as he is taking his son away from this place and all its bad vibrations.

Rafe tearfully asks Sami if she thinks she can ever look at him again without wishing he hadn’t gotten involved in Sydney’s kidnapping case. Sami tells Rafe that he can’t do this to himself, and begs him not to. She takes his face in her hands, telling him how much she loves him, and that she thinks that is what matters most.

Carly tells Melanie that after she was born, she was only able to hold her once, but it is her most precious memory, and she can remember it like it was yesterday. Carly flashes back to lying in bed after having given birth to Melanie. Lawrence explains that everything has been arranged, and that Trent is here to take the baby. Carly begs Lawrence to allow her to hold the baby just once, and Lawrence agrees. Carly takes Melanie into her arms and crows over her. She then asks Melanie tearfully to try to remember that she loves her. She then notices something on the baby’s neck and smiles, saying that she will know her anywhere now, no matter what. Lawrence announces that that is enough. Carly begs for more time, but Lawrence refuses. He grins, thinking it’s even more painful now that Carly has gotten to hold her daughter. She sobs as Lawrence takes the baby away. Back in the present, Carly explains that she knew she’d always be able to recognize Melanie. Melanie asks in surprise if Carly’s daughter had a birthmark. Carly nods, saying it was behind her left ear. Melanie’s eyes fill with tears as she tells Carly that she has a birthmark there, too.

Hope snaps that she was in that basement with Vivian and Carly, and she can back up Carly’s story that she feared for Melanie’s life. Victor asks Hope if she really wants her circumstantial evidence to keep Carly out of jail and in Bo’s bed. Hope warns him not to go there, but Victor ignores her, telling her that if she stops hounding Vivian, and lets Carly get what she deserves, then she will be out of all of their lives forever--including Bo’s.

Sami tells Rafe that she wants them to go home. Rafe nods, but tells Sami there is one thing she needs to know, and that is that he is not going to stop searching until he finds the person that kidnapped Sydney. He adds that this is his job, and that he can’t let this go unpunished. Sami admits that she wants justice, too. The two then take their coats and head out of Rafe’s office.

Kate is surprised that Sami is ok with EJ taking Johnny away at a time like this. EJ loftily declares that Sami understands that he needs some time with his son right now. Kate thinks Sami needs him, too, but EJ replies that she has Allie and Will to buoy her spirits. EJ then excuses himself to order Harold to pack his things. Kate sighs, telling Stefano that she knows EJ has been horrible, but she still can’t help but feel sorry for him over Sydney’s loss. Stefano doesn’t answer. Kate asks what he is thinking. Stefano rubs his chin, telling Kate that EJ seems nervous and edgy. She thinks that is to be expected since he lost his daughter and is probably in shock, but Stefano says it’s something else, and that he can tell by the look in EJ’s eyes and the tone of his voice. Stefano adds that he is sure that something is amiss.

Bo gets off the phone and tells Philip that he is having an officer posted at Melanie’s door. Philip snaps that he can take care of his wife, but Bo thinks that Philip could use all the help he can get, since his wife has been shot, and the wacko responsible is still out on the streets. Philip claims that Vivian is the last thing he is worried about right now. Bo tells him to get his head out of his ass, but Philip says he doesn’t need this. He starts to storm off, but Bo says that he can’t go anywhere until he gives a statement about the shooting. Philip shouts that he wasn’t there when it happened, and neither was Bo. He then tells Bo angrily that he is not going to let Bo use him to help the woman he is sleeping with get off. He adds that he won’t let Bo sue him to twist the facts. Bo scoffs.

Carly explains that she lived with Lawrence’s abuse for years, until he finally snapped and threatened to find Melanie and kill her. Carly sighs, saying she had no choice but to stop him. Melanie sobs, saying that Carly killed him, and now a man is dead because of her.

Hope scoffs, asking if, after all the years Victor has known her, he really thinks she’d make some disgusting deal with him, let Vivian off the hook, and let an innocent woman go to jail just to get her husband back. Victor thinks that Hope still loves Bo. Hope claims that that has nothing to do with this case, and that Victor knows that she doesn’t work that way. Victor guesses Hope is right, but thinks it’s a damn shame. He asks Hope to look where her attitude has gotten her--Bo is with Carly, an she is all alone.

Rafe helps Sami get into bed, and asks her to get some rest. Sami sleepily asks him to stay with her. Rafe agrees and gets onto the bed next to her, taking her hand in his. The two end up falling asleep. EJ arrives and knocks on Sami’s door, calling out for her. Neither Rafe or Sami hear him.

Philip snaps that he thought Bo was the one person he could trust, but it appears as if his loyalties lie with Carly. Bo claims that isn’t true, but Philip thinks that Bo was willing to use him to help Carly, and he has to wonder why, and why Bo is so blind when it comes to that woman. Hope walks over just then, telling Philip it’s because Bo is in love with Carly.

Melanie sobs that she is the reason Carly killed her husband. Carly says that isn’t true, but Melanie ignores her, saying that she is also the reason Carly came to town, and the reason Vivian is after her, and the reason Carly was able to ruin Bo and Hope’s marriage. Carly insists that none of this is Melanie’s fault, but she bawls that she is a curse on everyone’s life. Carly ties to soothe her as she wails that it was bad enough when she had Trent’s blood running through her veins, but now she has Carly’s too. She thinks it’s no wonder that she is such a terrible person. Carly tries to explain, but Melanie interrupts, snapping that her mother is a psychopath who had to kill her husband, and her father was just a low-life drunk. Carly shakes her head, saying that that isn’t true. Melanie shrieks that she should know, as she was the one that had to live with it. Carly cries out that Trent isn’t Melanie’s biological father. Melanie folds her arms, demanding to know who is then.

Victor calls Stefano, telling him that they need to talk. Stefano isn’t in the mod, and suggests they do it another time, but Victor claims that it is important, and asks if he can come over, promising not to keep Stefano long. Stefano agrees and hangs up. He then tells Kate that she might want to disappear for a little while, as her ex-husband is coming over. Kate wonders what Victor could want. Stefano isn’t sure, but guesses that they will find out soon enough.

Rafe and Sami sleep as EJ takes the key from the top of the door and lets himself in. He calls out for Sami in the living room, but gets no response. EJ searches through the other rooms and finally finds Sami and Rafe asleep on her bed, their hands clasped. EJ glares.

Victor announces, “Death to whoever did this.” Stefano agrees, “ Death.”

Melanie shrieks, “Carly, leave me alone!”

Vivian declares, “Melanie Layton Kiriakis will die tonight.”
