At the docks, a young John and Marlena meet. John reaches out for her. He can’t believe it’s her. Marlena flashes back to the present. She hears a noise and turns around quickly, “John?”

In Stefano’s hospital room, Tony brandishes a bottle of wine. He bought this to have with John and Marlena, but it’s more fitting if Stefano takes it. He can celebrate his brother’s murder. Stefano sighs.

At the church, Bo and Hope show up to find John’s casket draped in an American flag. It’s flanked by two pictures of John and Marlena. The chapel is filled with flowers. Hope gasps. Who did all of this?

At the pub, Shawn, Sr. puts out the ‘closed’ sign and pulls the blinds. Inside, Julie and Kayla set out food. Julie asks her about her parents. Kayla says Caroline is dealing with the news, but her father isn’t handling it very well. Steve grunts. He should have killed Stefano when he had the chance. If he had, none of them would be here now. Kayla frowns, “And neither would you.”

A few feet away, Belle frets. She tells Sami she is worried about Marlena. No one has seen her since last night. Sami thinks she just needs some time alone. Belle chews her nails. What if she misses the funeral? Sami assures her Marlena would never miss it. Belle gets a call from Brady and walks away to take it. Shawn hopes he can make it. Belle really needs her family here with her, and her mom not being around isn’t helping. Sami worries. Marlena is usually the strong one. She isn’t sure how she will handle this.

Marlena begs John to answer her. Roman walks around the corner. He tells her thy have been looking for her everywhere. The funeral is set to start pretty soon. Marlena chokes back tears. She can’t do this. She can’t say goodbye.

Stefano tells Tony to go away. He doesn’t have time for his insane accusations. He has his own problems. Tony tells him John is his only problem. He may have thought he finished something last night, but he just stirred up a hornet’s nest. When the Bradys’ tears are dry, they will come after him with everything they have. Stefano sarcastically replies that he is glad Tony cares. Tony smirks. As far as he is concerned, Stefano is dead. Stefano groans.

Marlena asks Roman how he knew she was here. He says John told him about the night she came back to Salem. She just appeared on the dock, like a miracle. That was a long time ago, but Roman thought she might be out her waiting for another miracle. Marlena sniffles. She just keeps waiting for John to reach out for her, like he did in the coma. She sobs. There is just so much pan and suffering. All because of one man--that DiMera. Roman tells her they have to go. Her family needs her. She panics. What if she isn’t ready? She spent the whole night here, because she couldn’t go home. He knows she can do this. She is strong. She has Belle’s strength, and the strength of every Brady. They will be with her every step of the way.

Hope walks up to the casket wonderingly. Everything is perfect. It’s incredible. Bo wants to know who did this. Father Kelly walks in. He apologizes for their loss. Bo asks about the funeral. He tells them it all arrived this morning, along with a check. Bo asks who the check was from. Father Kelly says it came from a V. Alamain. Bo grins, “Vivian.” Hope says that she is John’s aunt. Father Kelly says she won’t be coming, something about how she wasn’t welcome back in Salem, but she did want to make sure John had a proper farewell. Father Kelly excuses himself. Hope admits she had almost forgotten about Vivian. Bo thinks it’s pretty clear she never forgot about John, though. Hope whispers, “How could she? How could anyone?”

Kayla apologizes for snapping at Steve. Steve says they are all on edge. Julie adds that it’s no wonder, with Benjy dying, and now John. Doug thinks this whole vendetta is just insane. Steve agrees, but it’s a conversation for another day. Steve reminisces about John. He was the one that brought John back to Salem in the first place. He flashes back to meeting John. Back then he was just a paycheck. Steve never figured John would end up one of his best friends. Kayla hugs him.

Stephanie greets Abe, Celeste, and Lexie as they enter the pub. Stephanie gives her condolences to Abe. Celeste wishes he was at peace. Stephanie is startled. She doesn’t think he is? Celeste says she thinks that John’s soul will be very restless.

Jett and Chelsea chat a few feet away. He asks about Nick. She says he’s at home with the kids. He didn’t know John that well, anyway. Jett didn’t know him either, except of course, by reputation from the ISA. He wanted to come anyway, though. Chelsea is glad he did.

Belle tells Shawn and Sami that Brady and Chloe can’t make it. Innsbruck got twelve feet of snow and they can’t get a flight out. Shawn is sorry. Sami comforts her. Eric isn’t able to make it either, but they always have each other to lean on. Belle knows, but her dad would have really wanted them all together. Sami says they will all be together in their hearts. She hugs Belle. That’s what really matters, anyway.

Lucas walks up outside the pub with two larges shopping bags. EJ comes up behind him and asks if he can give him a hand. Lucas wants to know what the hell he’s doing there. EJ came to offer his condolences. Lucas drops his bags and punches EJ in the gut EJ goes down. He screams at him to get up. Kate runs up and asks him what he’s doing. Lucas says he’s just taking out the garbage. Sami, Doug, Abe, and Steve rush out. Sami asks what he’s doing there. EJ wipes his mouth. He came to offer his condolences. He wishes this could be different. Sami glares. This isn’t about him or her or Lucas. This is about John. She tells him to show some respect and heads back into the pub. Kate agrees. She tells Lucas he shouldn’t have behaved that way. Doug glares at EJ. He has a lot of nerve coming here. Steve tells him to leave. Abe tells him not to think about pressing charges, either. EJ just came to give a message. He has done that, and he will leave. He walks off.

Stefano thinks Tony has expressed a very heart-warming sentiment. Perhaps he will get his wish soon enough. Tony says it won’t be soon enough for his brother. Stefano asks why he keeps calling John that. Tony barely knew him. Tony sneers. He was banished on an island. He didn’t get to know his sister at all, either. Stefano suggests he give it a shot. He and Alexandra should get long famously, since they are both a disgrace to the family name. Anna comes in. They need to leave before they’re late for the funeral. Tony tells her he is quite finished here and walks out. Anna tells Stefano she can’t believe she pitied him. He is getting everything he deserves.

Lucas apologizes to Sami. He couldn’t help himself. When he saw EJ he just had to hit him. He’s the reason John is dead. Sami understands. But there is only one way to end the violence. They both know what that is.

At the church, Belle thanks Shawn for bringing her. She heads over to the casket to talk to John. Belle thought she could do this, but she was wrong. She needs him. They all do. She loves him and she always will. She knows he will be with her in spirit, but she really just needs him to hold her right now. She sobs. Shawn holds her. Hope comes over and asks if she can do anything. Belle says no; it’s just hard. Hope hugs her. She knows it is.

Lexie lights candle and joins Jett and Abe in the pews. Phillip walks in with Chelsea and Billie and pays his respects to Belle. Marlena comes in with Roman. Sami and Belle both hug her, and go sit in the front row. Father Kelly begins the service. He begins the eulogy, but is interrupted by Victor, who walks in and walks right up to the front. He apologizes as he knows he wasn’t invited, but he has something he has to say. He tells them he considered John a friend up until recently, and he takes full responsibility for it. He should have handled the situation differently, as he knows John would have. He never wavered from what was right, which was remarkable, considering he didn’t even know who he was for most of his life. Victor smiles, “This man with no name taught us what one human being with a belief in truth and justice could do if he was willing to back up that truth and justice with action and courage. I will miss him.” He asks Marlena for her forgiveness for interrupting. He only wishes he could make this right. Marlena thanks up. Shawn, Sr. walks up to him, takes him by the hand, and thanks him. Victor leaves.

Stefano takes out his cell phone and makes a call. He needs the limo right away.

Caroline gives her eulogy as she flashes back to meeting John for the first time. John was like a son to them-- in fact, they thought he was their son for a while. He fit right in with the Bradys, and they couldn’t have loved him more if he had been their own son. He is considered an honorary Brady. He brings honor to the name, and they will miss him.

Hope takes her turn. She thinks John was everyone’s hero. He came between her and disaster more times than she can remember. John always made her laugh. She breaks down and weeps. She apologizes to Belle and Marlena. She wanted to be strong for them, today, but she can’t do it. This never should have happened. He should be alive and here, holding his granddaughter. Belle sobs. Hope weeps. John always told her not to give in to the darkness, but she can’t be strong. Not today, when she has lost her brother. She breaks down. Bo rushes up and hugs her.

Anna goes next. She says she spoke with Carrie for several hours last night. It broke her heart that she couldn’t be here today, because John was like a second father to her. While Roman was gone, and Anna was off seeking fame and fortune, John helped raise Carrie. Anna only wishes she was around to be a part of it. The truth is, he raised her better than Anna ever could have. Anna smiles, “Thank you, my friend, for taking care of my little girl.”

Abe tells the group he saw John’s courage, determination, and love for his family. He is proud to call him his friend. As Shakespeare said, “I shall not look upon his like again.” John was never officially a police officer, but in recognition of his service, he will buried with full police honors. Abe salutes, “Farewell my friend, my partner.”

At the pub, EJ and Kate drink. EJ asks why Kate isn’t at the funeral. She thought he would be there, gloating over his victory. She knows very well EJ wanted John dead. That’s why he put a bullet in him last year.

Belle props a child’s drawing on John’s picture. Claire made it for him last week, and was so excited to give it to him. She promises she will tell Claire all about John. Belle breaks down. She just knows Claire will be as proud of him as she is. Shawn comforts her and leads her back to her seat.

Sami tells the group that if someone had told her six months ago that she would be eulogizing John Black, she never would have believed it. Not only because they didn’t get along, but because she thought John was invincible. She also thought John would never forgive her, but he did, because he is compassionate and caring. He was a good fried, a devoted husband, and a heroic father. She was so lucky to have two wonderful fathers. She thanks John for always being there for her and her sister, and especially her mom. She says now she will be there for him. His death will count for something. She swears it. Roman and Lucas sweat.

Roman says all of the words said today show how special John was. His relationship with John was strange. They shared a name, a family, and a life. He came back to town years ago to find another man had unwittingly taken his place in town. That man was John Black. Roman was upset, but John did something pretty incredible. He said he would step aside, and he did. That showed class. If anyone was ever going to have his name, he’s proud that person was John.

EJ says he didn’t shoot John Black. It must have been Andre or Bart. Kate says it always easy to blame the dead guys. Her point, is that he was always taught to hate the Bradys. Then he met, and even fell in love with one of them. Since that time, it must have occurred to him that they didn’t deserve this vendetta. And if that hasn’t occurred to him, then he is an idiot. He needs to take it from someone who knows. You can be so blinded by hatred that you don’t even see what’s right in front of you until it’s too late.

Marlena thanks them all for coming today. John touched so many people and affected so many lives. Marlena leans over the casket and talks to John. She hardly knows what to say to express what he means to her. He knew he was her life. She sobs, “You were my everything, my friend, my confidant, my lover, my champion. And were there such a thing, you were my knight in shining armor. When I think of all the dragons you slayed for me... I don't know if I'm ever going to feel safe again without you. I'm not sure anybody will.” The church door flies open. Stefano wheels himself in.

Stefano tells Marlena, “I've come to pay my respects.” Marlena screams, “GET OUT!”

Phillip yells at Steve, “My son has been poisoned and you're worried about your wife's hurt feelings? Get out of my face.” He pushes him aside. Steve punches him. Kayla yells, Steve!”

Sami asks, “What are you saying?“ Lucas her, “I'm saying you're right. I guess you have to marry E.J.”
