Donna stares at Katie in the hospital bed. She can’t believe Katie just said that. She’s pumped with all sorts of painkillers, she is not thinking straight. Katie repeats that this makes her sick; she can not look at this as some sort of blessing. Storm’s dead and they are acting like they should be joyful. Pretend that he didn’t kill himself and he’s left her with a life of pain and regret and guilt. “He should have let me die.”

Eric tells Stephanie that Rick has agreed to be his best man. She’s glad that he has someone to stand up for him. Considering the circumstances with Katie, does he think the wedding will take place tomorrow? He relays that is up to his bride. She states that she has been wondering if she should attend. She does bear some responsibility for what is happening here…if she had just turned Storm in, none of this would have happened. And she can’t help it, she does feel guilty. He toys with the idea of her staying and keeping the house and he and Donna will move elsewhere. That isn’t what she wants and now she wonders if he is having second thoughts about marrying Donna. She maintains that she knows him better than he knows himself.

The sisters take turns, both chastise Katie for not accepting this “gift” in the name of love that it was given. They think Katie’s take on things are terribly distorted and she is not being fair to Storm. He gave up his life so Katie could live. Katie cries that they act like his life was disposable. They are asking her to fight, but Storm himself did not stay and fight. “Storm left. Storm’s dead. Coward!” The last things they want to do is upset Katie, but they won’t leave her alone. Donna can’t deal with her attitude….the brother who raised her, who loved her…..he gave her his heart, so she could live. It’s an incredible beautiful thing.

Katie claims there is no beauty in this. This act has killed everything that ever was beautiful. They can’t ignore the horror just because they want to. They can’t make it okay. She’s broken and they can’t put her back together again. Something terrible happened. They call it a gift, but it’s not, it’s a curse! She cries this should not be happening. She should not have her brother’s heart beating inside her. This is wrong. Brooke reminds her she is getting way too upset, just rest. But Katie continues, look at her, she has been ripped apart like Frankenstein, something inhuman. Brooke points out again that this was not suicide, it was a gift and that is how Katie needs to look at it. “Your heart is a gift.” Katie cries that she is wrong. They want her to revere their brother who committed suicide. Donna tells her to stop it….stop calling it suicide. Is she so cold and hard not to see that this was an act of love?

Donna says too bad, because Storm will always be a hero to her. Katie spouts that he shot himself in the head…he blew his brains out. You can’t call it anything else. Donna begs to differ, he killed himself to give life. That makes it completely different. It was a gift. Katie sneers that she is just trying to make this into something beautiful and wonderful, but it is ugly and hateful. She advises them to just go away and leave her alone. She tells Donna go be happy, get married, just leave her alone. Brooke tells her she should not be there alone with her dark thoughts. Katie replies that she will always have those dark thoughts. Does Brooke really think she will ever get those thoughts out of her head of Storm putting a gun to his head? Or maybe it won’t matter. Maybe she won’t be here. And even if she is, what kind of life will it be? Every inch of her body is in pain. She knows she is the villain here. She’s the guilty one. She’s the reason Storm is gone and can’t walk Donna down the aisle. “Just go away and leave me alone. I don’t exist anymore. I am the walking dead. I am an insult to life.” Donna warns her that she’s can’t stay here and listen to this nor help Katie. She’s going to go ahead with the wedding like Katie suggested. They will miss her.

Eric says it’s a little late for him to be having second thoughts. Stephanie says until he says his “I do’s”, he still has time. After all for the rest of his life is not just a fuzzy, far off concept anymore. “At your age, it’s here and now.” Donna calls and informs Eric she thinks they should go ahead and get married tomorrow and he says he will take care of everything since she needs to be at the hospital. He tells Stephanie he will miss her martinis. She quips that he can invent a brand new house drink. Just don’t put any maraschino cherries in it. Then she says forget that, just ignore her. He can do anything he wants to including eating and drinking anything he wants, he’s on his own. They toast to the family – to more wonderful memories and bad ones. As their glasses clink, he says as you step forward toward a new direction, you also tend to look back and reflect. And he admits he has been doing a lot of that lately. She replies that she knows. She has seen it in his eyes. But he better get it all worked out by tomorrow. He remarks yeah, he’s supposed to be the happy-go-lucky bridegroom. She chuckles that he pulls that off so brilliantly, and he should as he has had quite a bit of experience at it. He makes it known that no matter what paths they take, he will always treasure her and all of their wonderful memories together. “I will always love you in my own way.”

Donna has a quick thought – tomorrow she will be Mrs. Eric Forrester. Katie tells Brooke that she can go too. She wants to be alone. Brooke says she won’t be able to get her to go away that easy. Katie pleads with her. She has lost Storm and she probably will lose her and Donna too. She’s even lost herself, so please don’t ask her to see things the way Donna and Brooke do. Don’t ask her to be grateful for Storm’s “gift.” She never will be and if it were her, she’d write her out of their lives. Brooke sits on her bed and tells her she knows this is frustrating, she’s living a medical nightmare, but she’s not going to listen to her say this life is not worth living. Yes something happened to Katie, something that changed her life. And she’s going to have to deal with the physical and emotional challenges, but she has Donna and herself….people around that love her. And that’s a reason to live, so come on and start looking at the things she has and not what she has lost.

Katie says those are pretty words…..but just that….words. She doesn’t want to hear them, and she will never be grateful. How can she? To admit that would mean she is grateful that her brother is dead by his own hand because of her. She just can’t accept that the way Brooke wants her to, so stop shoving it down her throat. More firmly, Brooke says she can be angry and mad and feel robbed. Or she can feel this is a second lease on life, it’s her choice. Does she want to live with all that negativity, or embrace life and live it to the fullest with the heart that Storm has given her? It’s up to her, she has that choice. She will find happiness through acceptance and through forgiveness. Is she going to be able to accept Storm’s gift and really forgive him for what he did? They argue, ”No I can’t, yes you will.” Katie sobs that she can’t, she loves Storm too much. She loves the beautiful, strong person that he was….and she wants him back. She wants him with her, but not like this.
