With dread, Stephanie remembers what Taylor told her. If she wants to save her marriage, she needs to go to Chicago and confront her mother. Reluctantly she picks up the phone and calls. She speaks to Pam and tells her she had to end the conversation yesterday abruptly and she assures her it wasn’t anything Pam did or said. Pam tells her that she told their mother that Stephanie called and she was surprised but pleased. Stephanie says she is coming to Chicago on business and thought perhaps a visit was in order. Actually she was thinking of coming to see their mother. Later today, she is going to fly in on the company plane. Will Pam tell her mother? She says she will. Stephanie plops down on the sofa and thinks to herself, “in a few hours, oh God!”

Ann seems to be happy that Stephanie is coming, but wondering why the visit? Stephanie makes arrangements with the pilot, no Mr. Forrester is not coming. Taylor walks in and announces Stephanie knows why she is here. Stephanie says to make sure she is going to confront her mother. Taylor tells her yes, but when they spoke yesterday she really wasn’t sure she would do it. Stephanie offers that getting on the plane will be the first step. Taylor replies, “no, telling your mother what it did to you when she didn’t protect you when you needed her is the first step.” Stephanie laments that she’s already done that in the past and her mother didn’t hear her. Taylor suggests that Stephanie will make her hear her this time. Does Eric know yet? Stephanie tells her there is no reason for him to. Taylor advises her if she’s wanting honesty in their marriage, isn’t that what intimacy is all about? There was no reason for her to come to Taylor and ask for help if she didn’t intend to be truthful. Her mother is alive. That is a huge thing to keep from your husband. She knows Eric would understand. He comes in and hears the last remark and asks what will he understand?

Ann asks Pam why she would ask such a question? Of course, she wants to see her daughter, especially if she comes to make amends. And what other reason could there be? What kind of mother would she be if she didn’t forgive?

Stephanie tells Eric that she going to take a day trip to Chicago to see her mother. He thinks she means at the cemetery until she says no, in person. He reminds her that her mother has been dead for thirty years. She confesses to him that no, she’s alive. He tells her he remembers it, Stephanie had a funeral, she cried. Taylor begs him to let Stephanie finish the story. She says it’s true, she is alive. Disgusted, he tells her this is just one more secret….a marriage filled with one deception after another. She apologizes and says she knows he feels betrayed once again. He lashes out that he doesn’t feel betrayed, he feels furious! Furious that he’s ever believed anything she has ever told him. Again Taylor intercedes and asks him to please let Stephanie have a chance to explain. She had a very good reason to keep this secret. Please listen to her. She urges Stephanie to please talk to her husband. Eric states that she better tell him right now or he’s walking out the door and never coming back. What is this all about?

When Stephanie can’t or won’t speak, Taylor tells him this is about a little girl, that little girl was his wife. She adored her father, but she had no voice. All she wanted was his love and approval, but all she got was his anger and abuse. Yes, as a child, Stephanie was abused…physically by her father. He’s aghast. Stephanie speaks up and says he knows as she does that parenting was different back then. It wasn’t unusual for a parent to use a belt on a child. Eric says not all parents, not his. Stephanie still maintains it wasn’t that unusual in order to get a child to behave. He asks is she saying that is the only way John Douglas could get her to behave? She points out that her father loved her, but he did lose his temper when he had a little too much to drink. Eric is still horrified. That is NO excuse for any parent to take out his anger on a child. Taylor tells him Stephanie is just beginning to realize that. Abuse is about control. And as a little girl, Stephanie never had any control, which is why she is always needing it now. Because, if she can control everything, no one can hurt her again.

Still skepticism from Eric, Stephanie tells him not to look at her that way. She knows in the context of everything what her father did was wrong. But, she survived and any marks from the belt have long been gone. But he tells her the emotional scars from something like this last a lifetime. Taylor adds that her mother bares as much responsibility as her father and tells a shocked Eric that she knew about it but never helped. Stephanie asked for her help, she begged for it and it fell on deaf ears.

He walks to a dejected Stephanie and states that no wonder she has been dead to her for thirty years. Wow. And her mother, that any mother could know this was going on with their little girl and not do something to help stop it. “So this is why you’re going? To confront your mother?” Stephanie grimaces and confesses she is going because Taylor thinks she has to figure this out….this thing about control because if she doesn’t, she knows she will lose him and that is the last thing in the world she wants to see happen. So she’ll go and talk to her mother, she’ll talk about what she did and didn’t do. She shrugs and that will be that! Eric tells her that he’s going with her. Stephanie is adamant – no. He is adamant too. He touches her and says he is her husband. No arguments. He loves her, “and I’m not going to let you go out that door and face this thing alone.”

Ann sits on the couch by Pam with a box full of happy memories, pictures of her beautiful daughters. And their father. She asks was there a more handsome man? And John loved them all so. And now her daughters were going to be together again. Oh how she wishes he could be here now too.

In going, Stephanie thanks Taylor, gives her a pat and tearfully tells her that she’s been thinking about Ridge and Thorne and the girls. And it might be good for them to know about this, but she thinks it would be very difficult for her. She says normally she wouldn’t do something like this, but she asks if Taylor could perhaps tell them? It was hard enough telling Eric. Taylor nods that she will. Eric pops in and says the car is ready. Taylor reaches for Stephanie’s hand and tells her that she wants her to remember that no matter what happens today, that all of them love her and support her. It doesn’t mater what her mother does or doesn’t say. “She can never take our love away from you. You are going to be fine.” Stephanie seems pleased as Taylor gives her a good pat on the back before heading out the door.

Gleefully, Ann remarks about the happy memories. They should have a chocolate angel cake when Stephanie arrives. It was always her favorite…..of course tastes change….just like people. She says Stephanie certainly did. Pam asks if she is thinking about the last time Ann saw her, how unpleasant it got? Ann opines that things were said that never should have been said. And they better not be said again. She won’t allow it.

Eric tells a glum Stephanie that it’ll be just a few more minutes before they take off. Is she alright? At first she replies yes, then bows her head and confesses no. She is sorry. He takes her hand and tells her that he is the one who is sorry. Her mother should have held her father responsible. Stephanie tells him that she did go to her when she was little. She tried, but her mother turned her back on her. She can still see her, just like she was standing there. She started humming that stupid song. And then when she finally turned and looked at her, she said, “shame on you. Shame on you.” And not to say anything like that about her father ever again. So Stephanie had kept quiet. Until she had gone to see her that last time thirty years ago. Eric says they were married. She says yeah, and she guessed she needed to understand in some way why she didn’t stand up for her. She really doesn’t know what she was expecting. Eric opines that what she was expecting was her mother to hold her father accountable for what he had done. She lifts her eyebrows in an amusing way and states that she went to see her, all grown up with children of her own. And when she got there, she remembers thinking that here she was a little girl all over again. Her mother did the same thing all over again. She turned her back on her again. So Stephanie thought, “okay, okay, that’s the way it is. Okay” And that was the day her mother died as far as she was concerned. “I walked out that door and never looked back.”

She sighs and tells him that she tried to push all those things deep, deep inside her brain. So you don’t have to face them or think about them, but you can’t do that. They are from your childhood and with you every breath you take, every minute you live, every beat of your heart. They really affect your whole life. They have affected her, their marriage and their children. And she is so tired of being this person with all this rage and anger. “Well go see her. I’ll talk to her, and she won’t listen.” Eric says yes she will. He’ll see to it. She needs to be heard. Every child that has ever been abused needs to be heard. “She’s going to listen to you this time. I’ll be sure of it.” They smile at each other.
