Continuation, same day of Thursday’s Episode

At University Hospital, Nick is on the phone to Brooke at her house. She is listening intently and in a panic when he tells her Hope is in the hospital….and she’s still unconscious. And they don’t know when she will awake….probably depends on how long she was under water…..and there could be brain damage. Long silence and when he calls her name, there is no answer. We see a view of the open patio door.

At the Forrester house, Stephanie is sitting on the couch going through a table full of photograph albums. The table has a couple of champagne glasses on it as well. Eric lets himself in and first thing he does is touch some leftover wedding flowers in the foyer. He spies Stephanie to the side and remarks that he didn’t see her there. She retorts that where would she be? Out visiting the children? He tells her he came by for the rest of his things and then she can have the whole house to wallow in self-pity. She rises and says she will miss him, 20% of the time….”you were never more than 20% here.” He turns back to her and asks what does she want from him? Sympathy? Didn’t she get enough of that lying in her trumped-up hospital bed? She asks how about a little loyalty….she had spent 40 years of her life propping him up. She wags her finger at him, couldn’t he have stood up for her just one time? “Stood up for you? Let’s see how that would go. ………Stephanie is really, really sorry that she lied to all of us…that she sealed it with a million dollar bribe and that she left two small children without a father. And she’s going to try really, really hard never to do it again.” She replies that no more than she’s done for him. She says, “a heart attack that never happened…. doesn’t compare to the lying of a father and a husband, the genius who was never there.”

Massimo is in his study as Jackie knocks on his door. He gets up and speaks her name and asks her to come on in. She says she would have called first but she thought he might say he was busy. He buttons his suit coat and says yes he does that sometimes; he’ll have to work on that. She comments that the other night, he didn’t seem himself. He says likewise that he thought Stephanie’s comeuppance would please her more. She smiles and says that’s funny, the person she was hoping to please was him. As foolish as that sounds now, did she really imagine he would be so grateful to hear something so shocking about a woman that once meant so much to him? “Did I think you would say, “Jacqueline, you are right. All is forgiven.” He says something of that sort had crossed his mind that it crossed hers. She admits she knew that night this would make no difference in the outcome of things between them….and now she’s wondering if anything can. She walks closer to him and speaks softly that she needs to know - if a second chance, that she wants SO badly for them, is attainable or is it just a fantasy. She continues that she can wait, but only if she knows there is something worth waiting for (think this fell on deaf ears, he looks pretty bored to me).

Back at the hospital, Brooke rushes out of the elevator and asks the desk clerk where is Hope Logan’s room? The lady points to the Intensive Care and she goes there. She opens the door to find Nick sitting by and leaning over an empty bed. He sees the concern on her face as she asks for her baby. He tells her they took her for an EEG. She wants to know if something else happened? He tells her no and she twirls to go look for the doctor. He tells her that the doctor will be right back. She turns again to face him and says she left her baby with him; she told him to watch her. In anguish, he says he only turned his head for a minute. She lashes out that Hope is only four years old and you can’t turn your head for a second while she’s in the water. Tears are welling up. The doctor comes in and tells her that he’s sorry but there’s been a new complication. They bring Hope in and Brooke turns all of her attention to her as they set her up for machines, tubes, etc. Brooke rubs where her chest and tummy is hidden beneath the blanket and repeats that Mommy is there.

Mass stands by his fireplace with a photograph of himself and Jackie from the mantle and says she was the love of his life and no woman could compare to her…….and when he’d found her again and learned they’d had a son…..a son he could be proud of…..it seemed like a dream. He has his back to Jackie but she adds it felt that way to her too. He starts to ask then what…….puts the picture back and turns and says no, they aren’t going to re-visit that today. She uses her hands for emphasis and says she has asked herself that a thousand times – why - a joyless affair that she knew she would regret before it even started. He throws up his arms too and says he doesn’t know if an answer would even help. He says what he is trying to say is - that WAS their second chance and he’s just too realistic a man to lull himself into thinking that three or four more would come out with a different outcome. He sighs, “but, that’s the way it is. Our time came and went. I know myself, Jacqueline, I can’t take the risk of you again.” She nods as if she understands.

Eric descends the stairs with garment bag in hand and adds it to the other stuff. He starts picking at the flowers again. Stephanie asks if he’s not afraid she will sell the house out from underneath him? He turns toward her and says everything is insured and inventoried. She retorts that’s right, he relates so well to objects. She should have known that….she wishes she had known that about him when she first met him. She clasps her hands in mockery that she wished she knew that was the real meaning of the ‘artist’, selfishly secreting himself away with his designs, his sketches and his fabrics. He stops what he’s been doing, the nit-picking of the flowers and throws them back and confronts her and asks how was work supposed to get done? And that he had supported her very nicely for a long time…..very nicely. She looks at him askance rather skeptically, points her finger and says, “let’s remember it the way it was…..I made you…..it was my father’s money that started this company….our company. And I am the one (she points both fingers to herself) who wrote the press releases that called you ‘the self-made man.’” (she makes the symbols of the quotation).

She turns away and he wags his finger and says she’s right. He never could have made Forrester Creations the international success it is today without a lot of help. She beams and says, “you’re welcome.” He offers he couldn’t have done it without Brooke. She shakes her head in disbelief. He goes on, “which is why I’ve asked her to assume co-CEO duties with me…..and I gave her your office, which you are not going to be needing.” Taken aback, she looks him in the eye and asks if it feels good to kick her while she’s down? He answers he knows she used to prefer it when he just stood there and took it. She shakes her head that this is absurdly adolescent, “and you sweeping her into that GRAND ‘Gone With The Wind' kiss in front of me, that was so déclassé. I always thought better of you than that!”

He seems to take great pleasure in saying that he asked Brooke to marry him. She lowers an eyebrow and retorts that he would. She also seems to take some pleasure in saying that Brooke doesn’t want HIM; she left there with her prize on her arm – Ridge. Eric tells her that Brooke isn’t with Ridge. Her son had his chance and he didn’t take it. She looks skeptical and asks if he’s going to be content to settle for second best? He says he knows he’s not Brooke’s first choice, but what did being Stephanie’s first choice ever get him except to be bullied, and nagged, and being lied to? She comes back, “oh, oh, as opposed to Brooke who never lied to you. Never cheated on you (she folds her arms across her chest)….I know, she makes you feel….. 45 again.” He replies that makes him feel like an old fool, doesn’t it? She shakes her head in agreement. He twists the knife more by saying maybe being with a woman of warmth and feeling is worth that to him. Stephanie tells him not to keep her in suspense, tell her Brooke’s answer. The silence speaks volumes and she chuckles that she is so sorry. Without missing a beat, Eric says he’s going to ask her again, and again, and again. And if she ever says yes, and it only lasts six months, it will be wonderful. Her face goes through all sorts of contortions as she asks, “are you standing there – are you telling me that…..(she folds arms again and whispers) you’re still in love with her? He asks is she just now figuring that out? He walks away with bewilderment on her face, mouth agape.

Jackie tells Mass thank you for being so honest and he replies that he never meant to mislead her, if he had. She tells him until today, she actually thought there was hope. He says she makes it so difficult – not her, but the fact of loving her. And she finishes it for him that he decided that wasn’t enough. Mass tells her a man can’t control his heart. All he can do is protect it; protect himself from it. She shrugs and says she doesn’t see how any marriage can survive if there isn’t forgiveness. Husbands and wives slight each other, wound each other every day. Sometimes they mean to do it, most time they don’t. And, if they don’t forgive, how do they go on? He shakes his head, he doesn’t know. He only knows what he requires to go on. And, he says he’s sorry. She slowly turns away and says she has her pride too so she’s not going to beg. She can live without him; she has. She simpers that she just wishes she didn’t have to. She says she will never stop loving him. Because he’s the father of her son… a man she so admires, and, (she points at him) the ONLY man in her whole life that made her be larger, not smaller (she cups her fist). She turns and says, “goodbye, Massimo.” Mass sinks into his chair.

Dr. Sobel explains to Brooke that an EEG would give them a picture of Hope’s brainwave activity, but they couldn’t complete it because she had another seizure. Brooke is shocked; she didn’t know she had any seizure. He tells her it could be just that the hypoxia – oxygen deprivation – had lowered her seizure threshold temporarily. The radiologist didn’t see a focal lesion on her CT scan, which was normal. Brooke takes that as a hopeful sign; no brain damage, right? He tells her further that there are some positives – her blood oxygen’s up and they’d seen some neuromuscular movement. What would make them the happiest is if she would wake up. Brooke asks if there is going to be a problem; what will it be? Dr. Sobel tells her it is impossible to say, but, chronic pain, behavioral changes, paralysis, persistent seizure disorder. Brooke covers her mouth and says, “oh, my God.” He reminds her those are just the possibilities; no probabilities right now. They just don’t know, but he’s upped her anticonvulsive dosage. And if they can just keep her stable and get a normal EEG reading, that would be a very good sign. And a clean scan in 24 hours. Brooke wants to know what they can do until then? He offers just to stay with her; talk to her. Keep saying her name. Hope is a word they can’t hear too much of right now.

Nick is sitting by the bed stroking Hope’s hand and calling her kiddo and himself Uncle Nick and that he knows she can’t hear him right now but, he wants her to know the doctors and nurses are doing everything they can to make her better. And he and her mother are going to be right there for her, and she’s going to be fine. Brooke tells him she thinks he should go now. He looks at her; he’s devastated. He tells her they can take turns sitting with her. Brooke says no, she doesn’t want him anywhere near her daughter. His hearts sinks again as he looks at Brooke.

Back to the War of the Roses….errrr Forresters. Stephanie dramatically gestures that what a fool she has been. Knocking herself out all these years to protect the dignity of the Forrester name, for what? Just so he could turn around and make a joke of it again, with Brooke? Eric wants to know who named her guardian of the Forrester family name? She spits they had four children in this house! Who are they supposed to look up to for standards? Him? He rails back that at least they weren’t afraid of him; they didn’t live in fear of him. She tears into him more that he NEVER once led by example, NEVER! If he had (she points at him), she would never have been driven to the extremes that she was driven to keep the family intact. He scoffs, intact – where are they now? Her daughters had run screaming into the night the first chance they got. She shoots back, and the first chance he and the boys got, they were at Brooke! He smiles that if there were never a Brooke, she would have driven them all to somebody else. She accuses him to don’t dare (with fist/finger for emphasis) tell her she didn’t know how to love him. And he answers back that the only thing she is in love with is the idea who they all should be. He continues, “you have nothing to say to all the living, breathing, people standing right in front of you except that we don’t measure up, and it’s made you into a bitter, angry woman.” He turns to go, “ I deserve better. Our family deserves better.” She throws an album at him; he catches it. She shouts here’s his family; what’s left of it because of his philandering and his indifference. She chides, “take that; (gesturing in grand style) take that into your ‘bright new day’ with Brooke.

He opens the album as in deep interest and makes mention that this is the Forrester family album and gee, he hopes she took all of her pictures out (we’re hitting below the belt here) because it is his family now, and he’s leaving (he smacks the album closed!). She shouts, “you bet your sweet ass (gritted teeth) you’re leaving! I’m glad you came by. Thanks for coming by and giving me a purpose.” He coughs yeah for making his life a living hell and she’d been able to do that all her life without any practice. She seethes as he opens the door to leave, “well, hang on to your sewing machines and your new CEO, if you can!”

Nick’s not budging but his eyes plead with Brooke and she says she doesn’t want to discuss it; she wants him to please leave her alone with her little girl. She takes his place beside the bed or Hope. She clasps her hand; strokes it over and over and tells her that her mommy is there; not to be frightened. She has good doctors looking after her and God will hear them; he always does. She strokes her hand, her hair, her forehead as Nick peeks through the window at Brooke singing the lullaby, “Hush, Little Baby”……. Gonna buy you a mockingbird…gonna buy you a diamond ring. Suddenly Brooke gasps as she realizes Hope is squeezing her hand slightly. She whimpers, “yes, honey. Honey, it’s me. It’s mommy. I’m right here.”

She clasps her hands tighter and sobs.
