“Prepare to die.” Says Massimo to Deacon.

Brooke answers her door to find Eric there. “Eric! What a nice surprise! Please come in.” She says. Eric says he supposes that Hope is exhausted due to her very busy day. “Word travels fast!” Says Brooke. “So you and Nick did it? You signed adoption papers?” Says Eric. “Yes, as soon as Nick and I are married, Hope will be a Marone.” Says Brooke. “Well I have to admit, I was hoping that you and Hope would always be Forresters, and this little one as well.” Says Eric.

Brooke tells him that’s what she wanted too, so much so that she had convinced herself that was what was happening. “How’s Ridge.” Asks Brooke. “I think you know the answer to that.” Says Eric. “I just keep hurting him, and I just don’t want to do that anymore.” Says Brooke. Eric says that Ridge is back at Forrester, and he has his family there to help him. “And so do you.” Adds Eric. “Yea, the Marone’s have been great.” Says Brooke. “I’m not talking about the Marones. You will always be a part of my family as far as I’m concerned.” Says Eric. “Really?” Says Brooke. “Yea, and I think I can prove that right now.” Says Eric, heading for the door. “Pat?” He calls to someone outside. A gentleman steps to the door carrying an item on a hanger. “Now I don’t hand these out to just anyone.” Says Eric as he brings the mysterious item to Brooke. As he unzips the garment bag, Brooke gasps in delight.

Jackie is pacing the living room, wondering what is going on between Massimo and Deacon in the study. “Quite a day, huh?” Says Nick. “It’s not over yet.” Says Jackie wringing her hands. “Do you realize that since I’ve met Brooke, I’ve become a Marone, I’ve gotten engaged, I have a son on the way, and now I’ve adopted a daughter?” Nick says with obvious pleasure.

“That’s nice Nicky.” Says Jackie, distracted. “Nice? Says Nick. “The drapes are nice Mother. This is my life, I was expecting at least a ‘swell’ out of you. Isn’t this what you’ve always wanted?” “I’m sorry darling; it’s what I’ve dreamed for you and more. Says Jackie. “I thought you’d be a bit more excited about this.” Says Nick, a bit disappointed. “I am excited, I’m just……just…..” Says Jackie, trailing off as she walks away. “What? What? You’re just what?” Says Nick. “I just don’t want anything to go wrong.” She says, as she attempts to peek in toward the study. Nick looks at her with a worried face.

“Massimo please!” Begs Deacon. “You scared?” Says Massimo menacingly. “Good. Feel it! Remember it! This is what happens if someone tries to cross me.” Says Massimo as he continues to hold the gun to Deacon’s head. “I haven’t done anything to you…I…..” Says Deacon, stopping mid-sentence and waiting to see what Massimo will do next. “I know.” Says Massimo as he takes the gun away.

“And now you never will!” He says, adding “Welcome to the family.” Deacon gasps with relief and shock.

“You made this for me?” Asks Brooke as she gazes at the dress. “Yes, I did.” Says Eric. “I hope you don’t mind.” “Mind? No, I don’t mind, it’s stunning!” Says Brooke. “Good, then I must say it’s fitting.” Brooke remarks that the way she’s growing she hopes it does fit. “Not to worry, I left lots of room for expansion.” Says Eric, adding, “Maybe not quite enough, but some.” Brooke laughs. “Eric, you didn’t have to do this.” She says. “No, but I wanted to.” Says Eric. “I know how it must have felt when Stephanie turned against you. But for what it’s worth, you still have my support. You and Ridge have gone your separate ways, and I think that’s really sad, but it doesn’t change how I feel.” “Me either.” Says Brooke.

“I love all of you, and I always will.” Eric takes her in his arms and they hug warmly.

“Wrong?” Says Nick, “What exactly do you see going wrong here, Mother?” “Nothing, for you and Brooke, nothing.” Says Jackie, turning to look at him. “Oh, says Nick, this is still about the old man being mad at you for staying out all night.” Says Nick. “What do you think he’s gonna do? Make you wear a big scarlet “A” to the wedding?” He adds. “Please don’t joke!” Says Jackie, and walks away again. “You are really upset about this!” Says Nick. “Nicky, I just found him! It’s…..” She begins. “It’s not like your marriage is coming to an end or anything. He’ll get over it, he’s just making you sweat it out a little bit.” Says Nick. “Yea, I wish it were that simple.” Says Jackie. “Well it will be, where is he?” Says Nick. “He’s in the study,” Says Jackie. “With Deacon.” “What’s that all about?” Asks Nick. “It’s not like they have anything in common. Probably just asking him for another chance.” He adds. “What?” Says Jackie. “For a job.” Says Nick. “Oh! Yea probably.” Says Jackie. Nick says he can’t help but feel sorry for Deacon, but Jackie tells him not to, that he’s nothing but trouble. “Mother, what is this all about, what do you think he’s a bad influence?” Says Nick. “The old man can handle a small fry like Deacon Sharp, in fact Deacon’s the one you ought to be worried about!” He adds. Jackie says she can’t understand why Nick had to invite him there in the first place. Nick tells her he’s just trying to fit in and to cut him a little slack. I think you’ve done enough of that for everybody. “What were you thinking? Welcoming him into the family?” She protests. “He’s Hope’s father, and I want him to be part of her life.” Says Nick. “I know, it’s just that you don’t know what he’s capable of. He could just turn our whole world upside down.” Says Jackie, exasperated. “When did you become such a pessimist? Asks Nick. “The bottom line is, I didn’t know my father growing up, and I don’t want that for Hope. Now I love you, but you’re just gonna have to get used to it. You’re gonna be seeing a lot more of Deacon Sharp.” Jackie rolls her eyes.

“That’s how you treat your family right?” Says Deacon, nudging the muzzle of the gun away from his direction. “I need to know that I can trust you.” Says Massimo. “You could’ve just asked!” Says Deacon, “I’ve told you over….” “WORDS!!!” Screams Massimo, then adds quietly, “are meaningless, actions are what matter.” Then he slams his briefcase closed and says to Deacon, “Today’s your lucky day, Deacon.” Shaking his finger at him. “Because I’m gonna show you how you can prove your loyalty. I’ve got a job for you, a very important job.”

“What?” Says Deacon. “A job?” “You did say you were willing to do anything to be a part of my organization, right?” Says Massimo. “Well, that was before you put a gun to my face, yea.” Says Deacon sarcastically. “Ok, this is your one and only chance, Deacon. This assignment is one of a very sensitive nature. It is gonna require cunning, discretion, and above all, loyalty.” Says Massimo, pointing his finger. “See it struck me today that maybe you were the right man for this job. But, if you are not interested….” Begins Massimo. “Go on, tell me about the assignment.” Says Deacon. “Huh uh.” Says Massimo, “You tell me, are you in or are you out?” “I’m in.” Says Deacon. “Congratulations Deacon, you’re one of us.”

Says Massimo, extending his hand. Deacon shakes it, with a worried look on his face.

“What is it with Deacon? He’s charmed even you!” Says Jackie throwing her arms around with resignation. “Don’t be so hard on the guy Mother, you barely know him.” Says Nick. “I know all I need to know.” Says Jackie walking away. “Now you sound like Eric Forrester!” Says Nick. “What has Eric Forrester got to do with this?” Says Jackie. “Well obviously he’s colored your opinion of Deacon. Eric was never able to give that man a second chance. I just happen to think this family’s a bit more charitable. Aren’t we Mother?” Says Nick. Jackie rolls her eyes and looks at the floor. “I’ll see ya.” Says Nick, and walks out. Jackie begins pacing again, and says to herself, “What could they be doing in there?”

“One hell of an initiation ceremony you’ve got there Massimo.” Says Deacon. “I trust I made my point.” Says Massimo. Deacon asks him about the job. Massimo tells him it’s about his wife. “What about your wife?” Says Deacon. “Well you two are already friends, sort of.” Says Massimo. “I wouldn’t go that far.” Says Deacon. “You’ll go further.” Says Massimo. “I want you to get her confidence. I want you to get her to be able to confide in you. And then I want you to come and report back to me.” He says. “What the hell do you want me spying on your wife for?” Says Deacon. “Why do you suppose? She’s been lying to me. She stayed out all night, claimed that she was drunk, too humiliated to come home and face me.” He says. “It could happen. God knows I’ve done it before.” Says Deacon. “I have no doubt that she was drunk, she seems to be making a habit of it these days, but there’s more to it see. She wasn’t alone. And I want you to find out who…..” Begins Massimo, but Deacon cuts him off. “Whoa, whoa, I’m not your guy!” Says Deacon. “Well I suppose I could hire a detective, but I think I’ve got the right guy.” Says Massimo. “Massimo, your wife went to bat for me! Now you’re asking me just to turn on Jackie?” Says Deacon. “So much for unbending loyalty.” Says Massimo. “Wait a second….just…just…” Stumbles Deacon. “No.” Says Massimo. “Don’t worry about it, I’ll get someone else.” “Wait a minute!” Says Deacon. “Get someone else?” “I have a lot of associates who would be only too happy to help me out says Massimo. “You bring me in here, you put a gun to my head, now you can’t just ask me to…..” Begins Deacon. “YES I CAN.” Bellows Massimo. “And I will.” Massimo heads for the door to show Deacon out. “Alright Massimo, I’ll do it. If this is the only way I can prove my loyalty to you, then I’m your guy.” Says Deacon. “Good!” Says Massimo. “Maybe this is the start of a real profitable association.” “Alright.” Says Deacon quietly. “Who do you think she’s running around with?” “You’re acting as though you don’t already know.” Says Massimo. “Massimo, how would I know who your wife’s running around with?” Says Deacon. “Well, she hasn’t exactly been subtle.” Says Massimo. “Who?” Says Deacon. “Eric Forrester.” Says Massimo. “That’s who you think?” Says Deacon. “Look, I don’t have any proof, but that’s where you come in.” Says Massimo. “Just out of curiosity, once I get this proof, what are you gonna do with it?” Asks Deacon. “You leave that to me.” Says Massimo. “That’s what I’m afraid of.” Says Deacon. “No, no, no, just remember one thing alright? You don’t say a word of this to Brooke, Dominick or anyone else.” Says Massimo. “I get the message, I definitely don’t want to be on your bad side.” Says Deacon. The both walk out of the study, as Massimo says “Nice talking with you Deacon.”

Just loud enough for Jackie to hear as she downs another glass of wine. “Yea, thank you so much for everything.” Says Deacon as they shake hands. Deacon walks over, takes Jackie’s hand and thanks her for her hospitality, and heads for the door. Massimo and Jackie both watch as he leaves. Then Jackie turns to Massimo and says, “So darling, what was all that about?” “What? That?” Says Massimo nodding to the study. “Uh huh.” Says Jackie. “I just did what everyone asked me to do, I welcomed him into the family.” Says Massimo with a smile. Jackie smiles like a deer caught in the headlights as Massimo walks away.

“Is Shirley taking her nap?” Asks Nick between kisses. “Shirley?” Says Brooke. “Seriously, don’t you think Hope looks a little like Shirley Temple?” Says Nick. Brooke laughs. Nick suggests since they’re doing all the name swapping, they change her first name too. “How bout we stick to Hope?” Says Brooke. “Ok, suit yourself.” Says Nick. “What’s in the bag?” “A wedding dress.” Says Brooke. “Do you like it?” “Yea, but I’m not supposed to see that am I? Before the big day?” Says Nick worriedly. “Only if it’s on me.” Says Brooke. “Yea, it’s nice, beautiful.” Says Nick. “Eric Forrester made it for me.” Says Brooke, looking at Nick to see his reaction. “I should have figured there would be a Forrester infiltrate this ceremony somehow.” Says Nick. “Well I don’t have to wear it.” Says Brooke. “Do you want to?” Says Nick. “Yes.” Says Brooke, nodding. “Well, then you should.” Says Nick. “Does it bother you?” Asks Brooke.

“I wouldn’t tell you if it bothered me. Let’s make a rule ok? This’ll be our first rule. If I’m doing something that ticks you off, you make sure and tell me. Got it?” Asks Nick. “Got it.” Says Brooke, asking where his attitude is coming from. “My mother, I don’t like the way her and the old man are getting along. They’re just not communicating. That’s the key to relationships. Communicating!” Says Nick. “Otherwise you have all this misunderstanding, and hurt feeling underneath it, and they should be happy right now.” He blurts out. “And they’re not! So you promise me…you make sure if you have to say something to me, if I’m doing something that you get it off your chest, ok?” “Are you sure?” Asks Brooke. “You might be opening Pandora’s Box.” “Well I can handle it.” Says Nick. He proceeds to tell her that if he’s ever being annoying, that she’s to tell him. “Just let it out!” He says. She says she will. “Promise?” “I promise” “Swear?” “I swear.” “Double Swear?” “Ok, now you’re being annoying!” “That’s my girl.” Says Nick. They then discuss how “Nice” the day has been. Nick tells her no one has ever used the word nice to describe his life before, and now both she and his mother used it in the same day. “Yea, my life has never been nice before either. It’s been scandalous and shameful, never nice.” Says Brooke. “I gotta give you the nod on this one kid. You’ve gone through a lot.” Says Nick. “I just made wrong decisions.” Says Brooke. “Well, now you’re gonna start making right ones, right?” Asks Nick. “Right.” Says Brooke. She takes his hands, and says “Thank you.” “For what?” Asks Nick. “For just always being sure about everything.” She says. “It doesn’t seem to drive you crazy the way I’m always being pulled in opposite directions. You’re always on an even keel.” “I’m the captain, that’s my job.” “Well, thank you, for being my captain.” She says. They smile, and he kisses her hand.

Jackie sneaks out to the garden to call Deacon on her cell phone. Deacon answers with a curt “Yea.” “What happened in there?” Asks Jackie desperately. “You’re not gonna believe this.” Says Deacon. “Try me.” Says Jackie. “Well Massimo and me, we had a little heart to heart. I don’t think he really believed your story from the other night Jackie.” Says Deacon. “What? He confided in you about that?” Says Jackie, flabbergasted. “Is he playing some kind of game?” She asks. “Yea, it’s called I spy.” Says Deacon. “What?” Says Jackie. “Jackie, he’s hired someone to keep an eye on you. Says Deacon. “No!” Says Jackie. “My God! Do you know who?” She asks. “Yea.” Says Deacon quietly. “Me.”
