“Are you going to tell me where you were the other night? Or do I have to root through your scum and find out on my own” Spits Massimo, fists clenched. Jackie watches him in fear unsure what to do next.

“I should have known!” Says Deacon. “You’re never gonna let me be a part of Hope’s life are you?” Brooke asks Deacon to let her explain. “No, I get it Brooke, I get it. I come here expecting to get a fair shake and I get screwed again. I mean, it’s bad enough you got custody of my daughter, now you want to cut me out completely!” “That’s not what this is about.” Says Nick. “No, that’s exactly what this is about!” Deacon says, adding…”You know, the funniest thing is that I thought you were a guy who had some guts. I didn’t see you as the kind of guy who would let some woman just steamroll all over him.” Nick looks puzzled. “Well, what makes you think I am?” He says. “Well she convinced you to adopt her daughter didn’t she?” “No,” says Nick, “this was my idea.” Deacon looks surprised. “Well that must have sealed the deal for you! No more sleepless nights worrying about Ridge winning her back, now she’s indebted to you!”

Deacon says snidely. “Oh come on Deacon, is that all the credit you’re gonna give your daughter up there, that she’s some pawn in all this?” Says Nick quietly. “Well what are you telling me now, that you’ve fallen in love with her?” Says Deacon. “He has!” Says Brooke. “I asked him.” Says Deacon. “Yes he did, and yes I have.” Says Nick. He says the first time he saw Deacon’s daughter she flipped him head over heels. Deacon asks him if he cares more for her than his unborn son. Nick tells him to believe what he likes, but that he is going to make sure Hope has every advantage in this life, and one of those advantages is a full-time father. “Which is a roll I’m sure you’re just too happy to fill.” Says Deacon. “Actually, I was talking about you.” Nick says to Deacon. Who is looking at him a bit speechless.

Eric is just pouring a fresh martini, when Stephanie asks him, “So Mr. Fashion Designer, what color do you think Brooke’s dress should be this time?” “God, here we go again.” Replies Eric bitterly. “Well, I was thinking in terms of some tone of……red.” Says Stephanie. “Stephanie, I don’t want to play.” “Oh come on” Stephanie says waving her hand as if dismissing him, “you’re no fun.” “You’ll forgive me if I don’t share in your revelry, I don’t think I’ll ever see the upside to Brooke marrying Nick.” Stephanie tells him that if he spoke to Nick’s mother she could see the upside.

At the mention of Jackie, Eric asks Stephanie if perhaps she had gone out with Jackie last night to celebrate. Stephanie wonders why she would go out with Stephanie. Eric tells her that Massimo had called last night looking for Jackie. “And he thought she might be with you?” Asks Stephanie. “Yes, and I have no idea why,” Said Eric, “but I hope it got cleared up.”

Jackie attempts to calm Massimo down by saying again that she was with Lauren, “I told you that already, you know that!” She says. Massimo tells her that Lauren was lying, just like Jacqueline is right now. “No I’m not, really!” Says a nervous Jackie. “Look, Lauren Fenmore was in Genoa City that night, ALL night!” Bellows Massimo, causing Jackie to jump. “There was no business meeting; there were no drinks, there was nothing!” Jackie acts like she can’t believe he’s saying such a thing, and asks where he would get such an idea.

He tells her that the next time she decides to make up a story, that she covers all her bases because this one was just much too easy to check on, and asks her to please not insult him with any more denials. He tells her he called Lauren Fenmore, who confirmed all his suspicions. When Jackie hears this, her face falls with the realization that she has indeed been caught. “I’m sorry Massimo” She says quietly. He tells her she wasn’t sorry until she got caught. “Actually I was,” She says, “I really hated having to deceive you like that.” “Then why did you?” Massimo screams, causing her to jump again. There are a few moments of silence as Massimo waits for her answer. You can see Jackie struggling to come up with another story. Suddenly she says, “How would you like it? Walking into your own home finding the police waiting for you, having to explain to them all of your personal business, I was just terrified, I was mortified actually.” She tries to look offended, and weepy. “Mortified? Because you spend the night away from home? Or because you spent it with another man?” Says Massimo bitterly. Jackie looks up in disbelief.

Back at Brooke’s, Deacon tells Nick he’s not quite understanding what Nick’s saying. “You want to adopt my daughter but you want me to be the father?” He asks. “Well that’s what you aren’t you?” Says Nick. Nick goes on to explain to Deacon just how it was for him growing up without a father, how much he missed that. He says he doesn’t want Hope to go through that. Brooke says that she knows how much Deacon has grown in the past year, and that if he keeps his act together, Hope can have it all, she can have a loving family, Mother, father and brother, loving grandparents who dote on her and Deacon too. “What do you say Deacon?” Asks Nick. Nick appears to be seriously considering it.

Jackie is stumbling over her words as she asks Massimo if he believes she was with another man. “Who was it?” Demands Massimo. “Who were you with?” “No one!” Says Jackie, “Please, you have to believe me.” “No more lies!” Screams Massimo. Then, he quiets down, and shaking his fist in front of her face, he very slowly and quietly tells her “You give me a name, and it better be the right name, because I wouldn’t want to kill an innocent man.” “Darling, you’re blowing this completely out of proportion,” Begins Jackie, but is cut off with Massimo shouting, “Don’t try to turn this back on me!” “But you’re not making any sense,” she says, “you’re talking about affairs, and murder!” “What exactly isn’t clear to you?” Says Massimo. Jackie looks down, and around, and nervously says, “Perhaps we should continue this conversation when we’ve both had time to think.” And begins to walk away. Massimo grabs her by the arm, spins her around and says “Don’t take me for a fool Jacqueline, I want a name!”

Jacqueline tells him it doesn’t exist. Massimo asks if it’s Eric Forrester. Jacqueline laughs and tells him no, and reminds him that Eric and Stephanie are back together. “HA” Says Massimo, “and all they do is spend their time arguing about Brooke!” (Glad someone on that show realizes that!) Jackie tells him that “even if Eric Forrester was interested in me, which he’s not, I’m in love with YOU!” And takes his face in her hands lovingly. “Take your hands off me; I don’t know where they’ve been.” Says Massimo. Jackie steps back, and looks at him as he turns his back on her. “Massimo, please don’t do this.” She begs. “You’re my life, you, our son, our grandchild, nothing else matters.” Massimo tells her she should have thought of that before she betrayed him, and walks out to the veranda. Jackie follows and tells him she didn’t mean to hurt him, that what she did she did for him and for their family. “Family?” Says Massimo, “Our family was perfect until you made a whore out of yourself.” “No, no it wasn’t it was falling apart.” Jackie says tearfully. Massimo tells her he doesn’t have any idea what she’s talking about. She tells him it’s time he did. “Massimo, I’ve been keeping a secret, and you need to know what it is.” She tells him.

“So you’re gonna let me be a part of Hope’s life then?” Asks Nick. “We’re not gonna let you, we WANT you to be a part of Hope’s life.”

Says Nick. “It’s a win/win situation. Just then, Hope and the Nanny come downstairs with a picture she’s drawn for her Daddy. Deacon takes it and looks at it with Hope, and they talk about what a nice picture it is. The Nanny explains that it’s Hope, Brooke, Deacon and Nick at the park. Deacon says “Nick’s in there too huh?”

Then Nick picks up Hope and swirls her around on an imaginary plane ride as she giggles with glee. “I’ll sign the papers.” Says Deacon. Nick tells him he won’t regret it, and Deacon says “I better not.” Brooke thanks him.

Massimo says he thinks he knows what Jackie’s secret is, but she tells him he most certainly doesn’t. If you aren’t having an affair he asks, why didn’t you come home last night? “I’ve gotten myself into something that has spiraled out of control.” She says. “What’s that?” He asks. “My drinking.” She says. She tells him the part of her story about getting drunk is true, but that it’s not the first time she’s turned to the bottle – that she’s been doing it quite regularly. “The whole mess started with Brooke, Ridge, Nick.” She tells him that one night she was down stairs, he had gone to bed early, and she was feeling really, really miserable, and so she just poured herself a brandy, and it took the pain away. “So the next night, I poured myself another one, and another one, and another one, and I got pretty good at hiding my little problem!” “Until last night?” Massimo asks. “Yea, last night I drank until I passed out.” She says. “I lost any grip I had on reality,” she continues “and I got into my car, and I dropped the car keys, and it was so dark I couldn’t find them. So I was lucky, I fell asleep in the car – passed out in the car actually, and slept until morning.” “Why didn’t you tell me all this before, why did you have to drag Lauren into all this?” Asks Massimo. “Because Lauren made it palatable.” Says Jackie. She says anyone can understand two ladies going overboard in happy hour. “I’m going to ask this just once,” Says Massimo “Is this the God’s honest truth? There is no other man?” “I have never been unfaithful to you Massimo.” Says Jackie, never blinking as she stares into his eyes. Well, at least she didn’t blink for several seconds, then she looked down quickly, blinked several times, and said “And I never will.” She grabbed Massimo and hugged him, her eyes darting around madly, hoping against hope that he’s believing her story.

“Are we to suppose there’s trouble in Marone paradise:” Stephanie asks Eric. “I’m sure she had a good reason for not calling.” He answers.

Just then the phone rings and it’s Lauren Fenmore. She asks if Eric has spoken to Jackie lately. Eric tells her he hasn’t spoken to her for weeks. Lauren tells him she’s really worried about her. She tells him that apparently Jackie didn’t come home all night last night until morning, and used some sort of excuse that she was with Lauren and they had too many cocktails. “Of course Massimo saw right through that.” She says. “What the hell’s going on with her?” Eric asks. “I don’t know, but I’ll tell you this much, Massimo’s not gonna rest until he finds out the truth.” Says Lauren.

Jackie goes up to her room, closes the door and immediately calls Deacon. Deacon starts telling her about the great news of Hope’s adoption, but Jackie stops him. “Massimo found out that I lied about where I was last night and he’s accused me of having an affair.” She says. “Does he know?” Asks Deacon worriedly. “About you, nooooo!” Says Jackie, as a relieved look floods over Deacon. “But if you start hanging around here he’s gonna figure something out and he will kill you, kill you!” She says. “Jackie relax,” says Deacon, “I’m the last guy on the planet Massimo would ever think you would be with, ok? It’s gonna be fine, just take a deep breath, and I’ll see you tomorrow.” Deacon hangs up. “No wait, don’t hang up,” Jackie whispers, as Massimo quietly slips in her door hearing everything.

Deacon picks up Hope’s picture, and says “Looks like you and I are gonna get a second chance kiddo! I just hope that someday you understand why I’m doing this.” He puts down the picture and picks up the lab results, stares at them, and says “Jackie’s right, Nick’s gonna make a hell of a father.”

Nick and Brooke stroll out onto the veranda. “We’re one step closer to being a family.” Says Brooke. “Strange though how some things never seem to work out, and other things just seem to fall right into place.” Nick is behind her, his hands on her shoulders, kissing her hair. “Deacon did the right thing; he really came through for us.” Nick says.

“Not gonna need these anymore.” Says Deacon, as he holds a flame under the lab results, drops them into a bowl, and watching them burn away to ashes.
