Episode # 9625 ~ The Jury Reaches a Verdict
Provided By Suzanne
Proofread By Emma
Sharon: There's no proof that I killed Skye, because I didn't. Maybe they believed me all along, and that's why they came back so quickly.
Adam: We can't count on that, Sharon. That's why I made the arrangements.
Sharon: No, that's too risky. That's way too risky. Adam, they're gonna find me innocent.
Adam: And if they don't, I am going to help you escape.
Nick: You sure you want to stick around for this?
Noah: Yeah, I should stick around for Mom.
Nick: She told me you went to see her.
Noah: I did, but I didn't exactly make things better for her.
Nick: What happened?
Noah: I laid into her about all the stuff she's done lately. I mean, I still love her, but...
Jack: Phyllis already in the courtroom?
Billy: No, she's at work. Haven't you talked to her?
Jack: No, she's been busy.
Billy: Yeah, well, she'll be here soon, hopefully with something that'll out-scoop everyone.
Phyllis: "Sharon Newman's jury is done pondering. Within the hour, we will know if they decided if Skye Newman took a topple into that volcano or if she was lobbed into the lava by her hubby's lady love." (Chuckles) (Sighs) Hey, Malcolm. Me. Okay, so how's your forensics guy doing? I just--please--nope. Before you say anything, please just tell me that he found the video of Sharon and Skye. Okay. No, it's--it's fine. Just keep on it. I'll call you later. "Deets to come."
Tucker: I need to see you. It's urgent.
Michael: Last time I checked, you weren't one of my clients.
Tucker: But Victor is.
Michael: What is this about?
Tucker: I'll be expecting you.
Michael: (Mutters) Hey.
Kay: Oh, well, hello, my dear boy.
Kay: I was expecting to meet your mother at the door. Are you two visiting?
Michael: Well, that was the plan and some lunch, but, uh, she's nowhere to be found, and, uh, I've got some business to deal with.
Kay: Well, too bad you can't, uh, stay-- join Nikki and me for--
Nikki: I just heard a news bulletin about Sharon. The jury's about to deliver the verdict.
Michael: What, already?
(Cell phone rings)
Michael: Oh, hold on. Excuse me. Hello, Victor?
Victor: There's a new development we need to discuss, okay?
Michael: I'll be right there. Bye. Excuse me, Ladies.
Diane: How was Sharon when you saw her earlier?
Victor: She's holding on.
Diane: Maybe it'll be good news.
Victor: Mm, I doubt that, not after such short deliberation. Let me hear what they say.
Man on TV: We've been allowed exclusive courtroom access, and we'll bring you up-to-the-minute live coverage as Sharon Newman is either found innocent or condemned to spend the rest of her life in prison.
Sharon: (Whispering) Why did you set this up when I told you I wasn't gonna do it?
Adam: (Whispering) I had to do something. You're not going to prison because of me.
Sharon: Adam, this wasn't your fault.
Adam: And you didn't kill anybody, but we just need time to prove that.
Sharon: (Sighs) Oh, gosh. When Noah came to see me, he was so disappointed in me. What's he gonna think if I run?
Adam: I don't know what he's gonna think. But perhaps if you find what you need to find to prove yourself innocent, he will think that you are courageous, and Faith will, too.
Sharon: You make it sound so simple.
Adam: Well, I don't know if it is, Sharon, but it seems like it could be, because it's no longer in the jury's hands. It is in your hands. This is the moment. You have one moment, and you have to seize it. If not... (Snaps fingers) It's gone.
Vance: (Clears throat) Time to go.
Phyllis: They tried to keep me out there with the rest of the freaks. Can you believe that?
Jack: So how did you manage to get by security?
Phyllis: Mm, how do you think? (Chuckles)
Jack: Lucky guy.
Phyllis: So it's all in the name of journalism. What are you doing here?
Jack: Oh, I wanted to squeeze some time in with you.
Phyllis: Mm, and you were hoping you'd see Victor?
Jack: Well, Victor is the one that brought all this trouble to Sharon. I'm kind of curious to see how he's gonna get her out of it.
Billy: Haven't you heard? The guy's all about bailin' these days. I wouldn't trust him if I were Sharon.
(Cell phone rings)
Billy: (Groans) The office again. I'll see you guys in there. Hello.
Jack: So it's beginning to look like you're Sharon's only hope.
Phyllis: (Exhales) The pressure's on.
Jack: Still haven't come up with the scoop of the century?
Phyllis: Honestly, I'm really trying.
Jack: I wouldn't expect anything less.
Phyllis: Let's go in there.
Nick: I'll be right back.
Phyllis: So Noah's back. When did he get back?
Nick: This morning.
Jack: How's he handling all this?
Nick: Well, he's worried about his mom. The press gave him a pretty rough ride this morning outside.
Phyllis: I'll talk to him.
Nick: Off the record?
Phyllis: Yeah, off the record.
Jack: So have you talked to Sharon today?
Nick: She's a wreck. I feel like I want to hit somebody.
Jack: Like your old man?
Nick: It never should have gotten this far.
Phyllis: So repeat after me, "No comment."
Noah: When they write stuff about who my mother's sleeping with and accuse her of being a killer, what do I do then?
Phyllis: Noah, honestly, you don't even know those people. You just gotta shrug it off, unless some of those comments have been written by your ex-stepmother.
Noah: At least you don't write lies about her.
Phyllis: The truth hurts sometimes, doesn't it?
Noah: Yeah. I mean, everyone's, uh, embarrassed by their parents at one time or another, but this... I mean, Adam takes my sister away from Mom, and she lets him move back in with her. And don't even let me get started on grandfather. It just makes me... I don't know.
Phyllis: Yeah, you do.
Noah: Ashamed. Yeah, I'm ashamed of my family.
Jack: How's it going, Noah?
Noah: It's been better, Jack. And, uh, thanks for being here. I didn't think my mom had any friends left.
Billy: Hey, there, Counselor. Would you like to make a bet on how the jury's going to vote?
Vance: Tell your readers we're expecting a positive outcome.
Billy: How about you? Anything to share?
Adam: (Sighs) Billy, talking to you is not gonna make anything better for Sharon.
Billy: Well, if you'd just leave town for good, that would make things a whole lot better for a whole lot of people.
Nick: I'd like a moment alone with her, please.
Nick: You don't look so good.
Sharon: (Sniffles) Yeah, I feel even worse. I didn't know Noah was gonna be here. Nick, he's-- he's so angry with me.
Nick: Sharon, he loves you. He wants to be here.
Sharon: A-Amy-- is Amy gonna bring Faith?
Nick: I'm sorry. I know how much you wanted to see her.
Sharon: Nick, I-- I need to hold my baby.
Nick: Look, I just-- I didn't think I should bring her. I mean, with all the press and the craziness, I didn't know how she'd react.
Sharon: Nick, this could be the last time I get to see her before I go to prison. (Sniffles)
Vance: Nick, I think you should step away.
Nick: I don't want to leave her like this.
Vance: I don't want her in tears with that camera rolling.
Adam: You heard the man. Back off.
Nikki: Nicholas still isn't picking up.
Kay: Oh, come on, he's probably turned his off because he's in court, Darling.
Nikki: Maybe I should go down there.
Kay: Oh, would you stop worrying about your son? Come on. Let's sit down. Come on. Come on. He's a grown boy. He knows where to find you if he needs you. (Sighs) I mean, you should be very, very proud of him.
Nikki: Oh, I am.
Kay: You don't know how lucky you are.
Nikki: What has Tucker done now?
Kay: Same old thing, only he's going after Victor's company now. But I assure you, I'm never gonna let that happen.
Nikki: You're a very good friend, Katherine.
Kay: I wish I could say the same about you. Have you talked to Victor?
Nikki: No. Why should I?
Kay: Well, I mean, if Sharon's convicted, I think it's going to go very hard with him.
Nikki: Yeah, it probably will. And I-it's all his fault. He created this whole thing. Do you know that he was in Hawaii when Skye died? He was a witness.
Kay: I-I didn't know anything until his testimony.
Nikki: Victor didn't tell anybody the truth until he had to. He was forced to.
Kay: He chose to, and the only reason he came forward was to protect Sharon, for heaven sakes.
Nikki: After everything that he has done to Sharon and the grandchildren...
Kay: (Sighs) Well, he must be feeling rather guilty right about now. Come on. If you talk to him, you'll make him feel better, Nikki.
Nikki: Katherine, the man has a perfectly good trophy wife. That's her job.
Kay: Ridiculous. Diane? For heaven sakes. All she will do is hold his hands, make those cooing noises, and assure him that he's gonna make all of this all right. Well, he wouldn't believe her. You... you he would believe.
Diane: The news has gone live in the courtroom. The verdict's about to be read.
Judge Salazar: Ladies and gentlemen, you've reached a verdict?
Woman: We have, your honor.
Judge Salazar: How do you find?
Woman: We find the defendant guilty of murder in the first degree.
Sharon: No! No! No! (Sobs) Oh, God, I'm gonna be sick.
Nick: Help her!
Judge Salazar: Come to order! Everybody sit down and be quiet.
Judge Salazar: Ms. Newman, you've been found guilty of murder in the first degree by a jury of your peers. You will be remanded to custody pending sentencing. Guard.
Vance: With all do respect, your honor, my client is ill.
Judge Salazar: Escort Ms. Newman to the restroom so she can collect herself before returning to custody. If she needs medical attention, see that she gets it. I want to thank the jury for their service. You are excused with the gratitude of the state of Wisconsin. (Bangs gavel) Court is dismissed.
Adam: Sharon. Sharon. I'm so sorry.
Man on TV: Again, Sharon Newman has been found guilty.
Diane: You had a feeling this might happen.
Victor: Unfortunately, yes.
Diane: It's awful.
Diane: Wasn't that her son sitting in the gallery?
Victor: Yeah, Noah was there.
Diane: Her poor kids.
Victor: (Sighs) Vance Abrams didn't handle this correctly.
Michael: He's one of the best.
Victor: I don't think he is. He is inept. (Sighs) What evidence did the D.A. have, for heaven's sake? A little audio tape. A videotape where you could hardly make out who the hell was on it.
Diane: But she'll be able to appeal, won't--won't she?
Michael: Well, that's the next step. But there's no guarantee things will go differently.
Victor: Sharon needs to be represented by the best lawyer possible... and that's you, Michael Baldwin. Will you take her case? I can't imagine her saying no to you.
Michael: All right, uh, there is another matter that we need to discuss.
Victor: All right.
Diane: Well, I have some errands to run, unless you want me to stay.
Victor: No, that's all right. Okay.
(Front door closes)
Michael: I got a call from Tucker. He wants to meet with me. How do you want to proceed?
Victor: As far as Tucker is concerned, give him anything he wants with interest.
Nikki: I have to go. I have to go to Nicholas.
Kay: I'll say prayers.
Nikki: Thank you.
(Cell phone rings) (Ring) (Ring)
Kay: Yes? Uh, Mr. Harrison, if this is about my portfolio, please, I-it's gonna have to wait. Another time. Would you repeat that, please?
Kay: That's very interesting information. Thank you for calling.
Tucker: Hello, Katherine. How are you?
Kay: Wipe the grin off your face. It's very offensive.
Tucker: You know, you'd think my own mother would be happy for me. I'm in love. I'm gettin' married.
Kay: And you just bought all of Adam Newman's stock options. How much did you offer Adam to sell out his family?
Tucker: He came to me. It's the easiest deal I've made in years.
Kay: Are you proud of what you've done to the Newman family?
Tucker: Why shouldn't I be?
Kay: Oh, you act as though this is just a simple matter of profit and loss.
Tucker: Isn't it?
Kay: Destroying a family.
Tucker: (Scoffs) They destroyed themselves.
Kay: Victor's my friend, and I'm your mother.
Tucker: And friendship and family trumps all?
Kay: It should.
Tucker: You expect me to buy that coming from you?
Kay: Oh, God. Here we go again. Oh, you got a bad start in life. Um, I gave you up, let you down, broke your heart, ruined your life. I've given you more apologies about that than I can count, and that is no reason--that's--
Tucker: Those apologies mean nothing.
Kay: Why are you so ungrateful?
Tucker: Why are you so hypocritical?
Tucker: Huh? You're my mother. When has my being your son ever made a difference to you? Hmm? Consistently, you place other people's families, business, feelings, and profit above mine. Where's your loyalty?
Kay: Loyalties are not inherited. They're earned. And Victor Newman has earned mine.
Tucker: Well, he's lucky you gave him the chance.
Kay: Well, you've stuck your foot in the door with getting Adam's stock. Now let me tell you something right now, it's going to end right there.
Tucker: Okay. You're threatening to sabotage me? Don't you get that this is business?
Kay: Yes, I do get it. And you listen to me, I was in business a lifetime--I was in business a lifetime before you could even spell the bloody word!
Tucker: I offered to go in on a Newman purchase with you, and you turned me down, so I did it on my own. I don't understand you.
Kay: You don't understand why I'm wary of making a deal with you since you've treated me so fairly in the past?
Tucker: You don't like how I operate or what my plans are to get more of Newman? That's too damn bad. I'm gonna do this my way, and don't delude yourself into thinking you can stop me.
Kay: Oh, you underestimate me.
Tucker: You... overestimate yourself, old woman. You're past your prime. So you go on. You enjoy your rockin' chair and your loyalties. I'll be busy makin' my next billion.
Nick: Let's go talk to Vance, see when we can see your mother.
Noah: I can't, Dad. I gotta get out of here.
Jack: Sharon is not the only one that that jury condemned today.
Phyllis: It's a good thing the kids have Nick.
Billy: I'm gonna post the verdict online.
Phyllis: Yeah, we-- we should write the article. We should go.
Jack: I'll see ya.
Phyllis: You're not coming with us?
Jack: Well, y-you're gonna be busy, and I got some phone calls to make. I'll--I'll see you, and maybe we can have some dinner together?
Billy: (Clears throat)
Spencer: I'm headed out to see to the press, unless you want first crack at 'em.
Vance: Spencer, I will appeal this case, and I will win.
Spencer: Isn't that what you were trying to do here? Win?
Vance: Next time, we'll have a less lenient judge who will require you to present evidence as opposed to hypotheses and conjecture.
Spencer: Just doin' my job. And if the situations were reversed, we both know you would have handled it the same way.
Adam: So what do we do now?
Vance: (Inhales deeply) I'm gonna have my law clerks go over every line of the, um, prosecution's case. If we can nail Walsh with a technicality, it'll go much faster. If we can't... it'll take months.
Vance: I'm sorry, Adam. I will turn this around for Sharon. This is not the end of the line for her. I promise.
Adam: No, it isn't.
Sharon: (Gasps) Can you please tell them to hurry? I think I'm gonna be sick.
Woman: Yeah. Lou, what's takin' so long?
Sharon: (Sighs) (Breathing heavily)
Lou: Just bein' thorough. The room's all clear.
Woman: All right, come on.
Sharon: (Breathing heavily) Oh, please hurry.
Woman: Yeah, yeah.
Sharon: Oh, my goodness. (Whimpers) (Breathing heavily) (Whispering) Oh, God, oh, God, oh, God.
Woman: You okay in there?
Sharon: Uh... yeah, I-I'm fine. I just--I need a minute.
(Faucet turns on)
Nick: Noah. Noah. Wait, just hold on.
Noah: Dad, I-I can't stay here. I'm leaving. I'm going back to New York.
Nick: What, were you planning on walking there?
Noah: No, I was gonna go home and grab a cab to the airport.
Nick: Something tells me your bags are already packed. So this is not just about the--the trial and court. You just don't want to be here, right? You don't want to be home.
Noah: No. (Sighs) Look, d-did you know that Summer and I practically talk every day? That we talk about music, my gigs, her friends?
Nick: Son, I love it that you and your sister are close.
Noah: When I'm there, Dad, away. But when I'm here, it's always what's goin' on with Mom, what I should do to be helping her.
Nick: You really like New York then? You're making yourself a nice life there?
Noah: Yeah. Good or bad, at least it's mine. (Sighs) But look, if you need me to stay, I'll stay.
Nick: Noah, your mom and I want the same thing, and that's for you to be happy. Sounds like New York is what makes you happy, so... when's your flight?
Noah: I don't know, whatever I can get. (Clears throat)
Nick: Then do me a favor-- will you call me once in a while? Just let me know how you're doing?
Noah: Yeah, I will.
Noah: Hey, look, I-I-I know its rough between you and Mom because of the divorce. But could you try to keep lookin' after her?
Diane: I heard about Sharon, and I needed to see you.
Nikki: Where is your wife?
Victor: I beg your pardon. What business is that of yours?
Nikki: Well... (Clears throat)
Victor: I am not in the mood, okay?
Nikki: But you see? That's the good thing about divorce is your moods no longer dictate what I do. I have some things to say to you.
Victor: If you are here to talk about the verdict against Sharon, save your breath. You have no right to judge me, nor does anyone else, all right?
Phyllis: So how's this? "The Sharon/Adam relationship is twisted. It's crazy. It's dark. Call it love, lunacy, lust." Just... "They have something powerful."
Billy: (Vibrates lips)
Phyllis: What is wrong? Why do you not like it?
Billy: (Sighs) I don't like the villain. I was all set for it to be Adam. The guy is such a donkey.
Phyllis: I know he's a donkey. He's a donkey in love. That's what I'm trying-- but he's not really the villain. It's Victor. He's the villain with this whole "Skye's dead, Skye's not dead. Oh, wait, wait. She's lava melt."
Billy: Okay, write the story. Make "Adam the donkey" the hero for once.
Phyllis: All right, I will. But believe me, Boss, he is not gonna be the hero for long. He's gonna do something sociopathic soon.
Billy: I hope so.
Jack: Waitin' for someone?
Adam: Waiting for something, something to help her. Some idea that can turn this whole thing around.
Jack: Yeah, well, we're on the same side today. Sharon didn't deserve this. (Sighs)
Adam: Well, I'm not done fighting for her.
Woman: (Muffled cries) (Grunts)
Sharon: Oh, God.
Tucker: Have a seat.
Tucker: We don't have to make this unpleasant.
Michael: I'm going for the quick option, since you claimed it was so urgent.
Tucker: All right. I've purchased a large quantity of your boss' stock.
Michael: Okay. I'll bite. Who from? Uh, one of the kids? Abby.
Michael: You could have told me this over the phone.
Tucker: You need to see the confirmation so there aren't any doubts.
Michael: Uh, I would have had that information by the end of the business day, and yet you wanted to do this face-to-face.
Tucker: I needed to send a message. You're the messenger. Tell Victor I'm interested in purchasing more of his magnificent company.
Michael: (Chuckles) Victor has no desire to engage you in any transactions whatsoever, Tucker.
Tucker: Well, maybe not. But if he's gotta sell, he's gonna want to sell to someone who can pay him far above market price.
Michael: It's never gonna happen.
Tucker: We'll see.
Kay: Yes, yes, yes. I am well aware that, uh, the S.E.C. is committed to stomping out poor business practices. That's why I'm compelled to make this call. Um, he's a reprehensible businessman named... Tucker McCall. Who am I? I'm his mother.
Diane: If there's anything I can do to help...
Nick: There isn't, but thank you. I have to go.
Diane: Nick, there's something else that I wanted to say to you. Wh-when I was leaving the house, Michael was there, and Victor told him to start right away on Sharon's appeal. So I want you to know that Victor's gonna do everything he can to help her.
Nick: Well, you just had to bring him up, didn't you?
Diane: I just wanted to give some h-hope to you and to your children.
Nick: Okay, well, don't do that, all right? Don't talk to me about my father and how he suddenly cares about Sharon's fate and the welfare of our children. Don't do that. Don't defend him.
Diane: That's not what I'm doing.
Nick: That's what it sounds like to me.
Jack: You seem upset.
Diane: Uh, the--the verdict. It's awful.
Jack: Well, let's see. The verdict was announced about an hour ago. Nick just walked away ten seconds ago. My guess is whatever's bothering you has something to do with him. (Laughs)
Diane: What's funny?
Jack: I can almost see the wheels turning. "Do I lie, or do I come clean?"
Diane: Which will get rid of you faster?
Jack: Maybe if you tell the truth.
Diane: Nick, uh, he upset me.
Diane: I told him I was sorry about Sharon, and he didn't want to hear it.
Jack: He doubted your sincerity?
Diane: I am trying to make my marriage work. It's important to me that I get along with Victor's children.
Victor: You're in no position to criticize me for anything, all right? Not after the missteps you have taken.
Nikki: Are you done?
Victor: Yes, and you can go.
Nikki: Not until I've had my turn.
Victor: (Sighs) Spare me.
Nikki: When I came here, I intended to let you have it.
Victor: (Sighs heavily)
Nikki: But I changed my mind.
Victor: I said, "Spare me."
Nikki: I changed my mind because I saw how frustrated and sad you were.
Victor: Well, now you're feeling sorry for me, or what?
Nikki: Hardly. I don't care about your excuses or your explanations. But I do care about what you did. You went on the stand for Sharon, and that was very admirable.
Victor: But what?
Nikki: But it wasn't enough.
Victor: Really? No kidding.
Nikki: Look, you need to listen to me on this. Your first try at fixing things didn't work, but the next thing you do will work. You will make things work for Sharon and for this family.
Victor: (Sighs) What the hell has happened? (Sighs) What has happened with my family?
Nikki: You have always come to your family's rescue, and you will do it again.
Victor: Sometimes I don't know anymore. But I will defend Sharon to the last, and I won't allow her children to suffer or our son to suffer.
Nikki: I know. I know.
Phyllis: I have good news.
Phyllis: (Clears throat) Remember the memory card I told you about that fell out of Sharon's camera?
Billy: Yeah, it had, uh, video of Skye and Sharon on it that Adam said...
Billy: Would prove Sharon's innocence. Yes, I remember.
Phyllis: Well, listen. I'll tell you a secret. After Adam left Thailand, I stayed around looking for it. I came home with, uh, probably a thousand memory cards.
Billy: Well, um, tell me that one of them has, uh, the video on it.
Phyllis: Well, the thing is, is that Malcolm put me in touch with one of his friends who works in--
Billy: Okay, do we have the video? Or do we not have the video?
Phyllis: (Whispering) That was Malcolm on the phone. His friend might have just come up with something.
Man: Mr. Newman, can you give us a comment?
Adam: Yeah. I have something to say. Sitting in that courtroom listening to that jury find Sharon guilty-- it's been one of the worst days of my life. Sharon did not kill Skye. She is innocent.
Sharon: God. You said the bars would be loose. (Sighs) (Sighs)
Adam: But this won't end here.
Sharon: (Muttering) (Grunts) (Sighs)
Adam: We're gonna appeal Sharon's case, and believe me, we will win.
Sharon: (Grunts) (Grunts) (Breathing heavily)
Next on "The Young and the Restless"...
Victoria: Dad gave Adam a payday. I knew it!
Sharon: You really thought of everything, Adam.
Phyllis: If it was premeditated, then she had help. I'm gonna find "Team Sharon," and I'm gonna come back tonight with an exclusive.
