Episode # 9598 ~ Adam's Lies Dismay Sharon
Provided By Suzanne
Proofread By Emma
Ashley: So, Honey, have you thought any more about getting married at Katherineís? What do you think?
Tucker: Well, I think, uh, things have been better between us. It could maybe help keep 'em that way.
Ashley: (Sighs) Our family's coming together. Another one is being torn apart.
Tucker: It doesn't look good for Victor.
Ashley: This isn't good for anybody.
Tucker: Well, now Abby stands to gain a lot more than when she started this lawsuit.
Ashley: Honey, come on. All the money in the world isn't worth losing her father.
Tucker: Why don't we wait and see how things shake down? It might not be as bad as you think.
Phyllis: That's yesterday's news. You're never gonna guess who attended the arbitration meeting with Victor.
Jack: Okay, I'll bite.
Jack: Why would they join forces?
Phyllis: We both know what Victor stands to lose, right? Now what kind of carrot would have Victor dangled in front of Adam's face to do what he wants? Sharon.
Jack: Victor agreed to testify for Sharon.
Jack: Boy, I hate to think what Adam agreed to do in return.
Phyllis: Yeah, there's only one way to find out.
Jack: Well, I-I thought Billy didn't want you covering this story.
Phyllis: No, I'm not gonna cover the story. I'm just gonna see what's going on.
Jack: Call me. Stay in touch.
Phyllis: Of course I will.
Jack: Damn it.
(Cell phone vibrates)
Judge Phelps: (Speaking indistinctly) Mr. Newman, do you stand by your statement that you forged Victor Newmanís signature on the trusts upon which this lawsuit is based?
Adam: Yes, your honor.
Judge Phelps: You realize you are confessing to a crime.
Nick: He's lying. My father drew up those trusts and signed them.
Michael: Your honor, my client did draw up the original trusts. But as he explained, when Adam was in control of the Newman estate, he rewrote the trusts, falsifying his father's signature on the new documents.
Victoria: Why didn't Dad mention this before he filed the suit?
Nick: Because he just came up with it, that's why.
Michael: Your honor, my client had just suffered the traumatic loss of his wife before resuming control of his company. During his absence, Newman Enterprises had suffered tremendous upheaval. My client is still trying to sort out all the things his son did while he was in charge. The fact that this forgery went undetected is completely understandable.
Victoria: This is outrageous! You can't let him get away with this.
Abby: What, so we're gonna get nothing?
Judge Phelps: All-- all of you sit down.
Nick: The hell we're not.
Judge Phelps: All of you are about to be in contempt.
Nick: You're both lying bastards, and you deserve each other.
Judge Phelps: Quiet!
Nick: This is ridiculous.
Judge Phelps: I want order...
Nick: He's clearly lying.
Judge Phelps: In this room. Everyone sit down.
Judge Phelps: The next person who speaks without permission will be cited for contempt. Mr. Baldwin, do you have proof of what your witness is saying?
Michael: Yes, your honor. I have the original documents signed by Victor Newman.
Leslie: Your honor, this claim should be dismissed for what it is-- a last-minute stunt to stop you from ruling in my clients' favor.
Judge Phelps: That may be, Ms. Michaelson, but it is a matter that warrants further investigation, not only in my opinion, but according to the law.
Nick: You are seriously giving weight to the word of this convicted felon?
Judge Phelps: Mr. Newman, you and your sisters are suing your father for $3 billion. I am not about to render a decision without thoroughly investigating every bit of information that's brought to light. Your brother...
Victoria: (Scoffs) Half brother.
Judge Phelps: Has just confessed to a crime. That is a very serious matter, whether it's the truth or not. And, Mr. Newman, believe me. I will find out.
Ashley: Wow. Jabot's first quarter earnings look better than I thought they would.
Tucker: Take a look at Beauty of Nature's numbers.
Ashley: How did you get a hold of these?
Tucker: You underestimate me, Darlin'.
Ashley: Are you kidding? I'd never do that. (Gasps) Wow. Impressive.
Tucker: Can you imagine if we were able to merge the two companies?
Ashley: Mm, I can only imagine it, 'cause Victor's never gonna sell Beauty of Nature.
Tucker: Well, if Newman goes public...
Ashley: Well, it's not gonna happen. Victor won't let it.
Tucker: He may not have a choice.
(Knock on door)
Jack: We got a big problem, Tucker.
Ashley: What's that, Jack?
Phyllis: Hey, Sharon, what a surprise.
Sharon: (Sighs) Go away, Phyllis.
Phyllis: Oh, my goodness. For weeks you've been trying to get me to help you prove you didn't kill Skye. Now you don't want me around. Did you secure your freedom some other way? Your lapdog in there trying to do that for you right now?
Judge Phelps: Thank you, Mr. Baldwin. You may be seated, Counselor.
Judge Phelps: I will allow these new documents to be entered into evidence. The signatures on them will be compared to the ones on the trusts originally submitted. Adam Newman will provide a sample of his handwriting also for comparison purposes.
Leslie: I'd like our own forensic handwriting expert to analyze the signatures as well, your honor.
Judge Phelps: Fine. Adam Newman will also give a full and truthful deposition by the end of business tomorrow, and, Mr. Newman, if you are lying, you will be prosecuted. Is that understood?
Adam: Yes, your honor. It's understood.
Judge Phelps: Very well. We are adjourned.
Abby: I'm sorry. What the hell just happened?
Nick: Well, Dad convinced Adam to lie for him. That's what happened.
Victoria: So what did he promise you? Did he promise you a piece of his company? Maybe a place in his heart? Well, don't count on getting it, 'cause when he's through with you, he's just gonna toss you aside, too.
Adam: Dad and I have a different relationship than the three of you do.
Nick: You're right. We actually meant something to him. Imagine what he's gonna do to you.
(Knock on door)
Sharon: Adam, I need to speak with you.
Adam: Sure. Listen, everything is fine, okay? You're just gonna have to trust me on this.
Sharon: You said you had a meeting. You lied.
Phyllis: That's a shock.
Sharon: Adam, why are you here? This lawsuit has nothing to do with either one of us. If you won't tell me, I'll just ask someone else who will.
Nick: Oh, it's gonna be all over the press soon.
Sharon: What will?
Nick: Adam just confessed to forging Dad's signatures on our trusts, the one's we're suing Dad over.
Phyllis: What does that mean?
Nick: It means the whole case could get thrown out based on Adam's testimony-- his false testimony.
Sharon: You didn't do this. I know you didnít.
Adam: I did do it. I drew up the trusts, and I signed Dad's name.
Leslie: So I will check on that handwriting expert. Okay?
Leslie: All right.
Phyllis: Hi, Victor. What did you offer to do for Sharon in exchange for Adam's testimony?
Abby: Wait, what is she talking about?
Michael: Uh, coffee's on me.
Michael: Come on. There we go. How about some decaf? That's the spirit.
Adam: You're gonna have to trust me on this one.
Sharon: Let's go home. We'll just talk about it there.
Adam: I can't now. I have some things I have to do.
Sharon: Adam, don't do this.
Adam: Sharon, it'll be okay. I'll explain later.
Sharon: You canít.
Nick: You know, I wanted to settle this, to end it, but you turned me down. I knew you were up to something, but I never thought you would stoop this low.
Victor: Don't know me that well, do you?
Nick: I don't know you at all.
Victor: You brought this on yourselves.
Nick: No, you did. You forced us out of your life, because no matter what happens after this, I'm done with you.
Victoria: We all are done.
Victor: Come on, Son.
Abby: Why would Adam help Dad?
Nick: There's only one thing Dad could have used to get Adam to lie for him, and that's Sharon.
Abby: Well, what if the judge believes Adam? Or--or--or what if these handwriting experts say that he really did forge our trusts?
Nick: That will not be good for us.
Abby: Th-that won't be good? That won't be good? We would lose.
Abby: Oh, donít. Donít. Don't talk to me like I am kid. We are going to lose this lawsuit, and I am going to end up with nothing. Admit it.
Victoria: It's possible.
Abby: All of the settlements that Dad wanted me to take. I mean, he--he was offering me twice what I was originally asking for, a-and not even the money-- he wanted to make peace. He wanted to have a real relationship with me. Right now, I could have my trust fund and a relationship with my dad, but I have nothing, because I listened to you and Uncle Jack and Vance and Leslie, and I listened to everybody except for myself.
Victoria: Hey, listen, I know you're hurt, okay? Nick and I, we're really upset about this, too. Dad used Adam to win the suit.
Abby: And you used me. What's the difference?
Victoria: Abb-- Abby.
Phyllis: You know Adam's lying. I know Adam's lying. We all know Adam is lying. You know, I used to think that Sharon had this unique hold that was only specific to Nick, but she's doing the same thing to Adam. I mean, he's willing to perjure himself in order to get her out of her murder charge.
Michael: What do you care? You're not married to Nick anymore. This has nothing to do with you.
Phyllis: This is my-- this is my family. It's my family. Victor is my daughter's grandfather. I mean, if I just sit back and do nothing, it's like telling my daughter that I condone what he's doing, and I don't want her to think that.
Michael: So you think its right that Nick is suing his father.
Phyllis: It's not illegal. It's better than what your client is doing.
Phyllis: I'm just gonna write what I know.
Michael: Oh. Oh, then I suppose you'll be writing that Jack is the one who initiated this whole lawsuit to begin with. You did know that, didn't you?
Phyllis: Of course I did. Of course I did. Mm-hmm.
Michael: Of course you did. Of course--you're a big liar.
Tucker: Ms. Dupre is in charge of the biodiesel project. Well, she was on personal leave, but she's back now. Yeah. I'll have her call you. So, Jack... (Sighs) What's the urgent problem?
Jack: Our major distributor in Bulgaria is now threatening to cancel a major contract.
Tucker: Well, I'll call the buyer, stall for time.
Jack: Okay, and I'll call you as soon as we have a scheduled delivery date.
(Cell phone rings)
Ashley: That's Abby. Hold on a second. Hey, Sweetie. What happened with the arbitration?
Abby: It was awful.
Ashley: Why? What happened?
Abby: Adam showed up. He said that he forged the trust documents. The original ones give Dad complete control over our money. The judge is gonna throw out the case, and I am gonna lose everything.
Ashley: Where are you, Honey?
Abby: I'm at your place. I thought you'd be here.
Ashley: Okay, I'm on my way.
Jack: Ash, what happened?
Ashley: You know, only Victor would use one of his children to hurt his other children.
Ashley: Yeah, Adam's claiming now that he forged the trusts. Abby thinks that the whole thing is gonna be thrown out because of his testimony.
Jack: She could walk away with nothing.
Ashley: (Sighs) I gotta get out of here.
Tucker: Okay. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you or Abby.
Ashley: Okay. All right, Honey. Thank you.
Ashley: Bye, Jack.
Jack: Bye. This man has no problem screwing over his own kids.
Tucker: And you. If Victor wins, we'll never get our hands on Beauty of Nature.
Ashley: Aah! Really?
Abby: I hate him. I hate him so much. He is a lying, manipulative jerk!
Ashley: Okay, what happened at the hearing?
Abby: This was all his idea.
Ashley: What was, Abby?
Abby: The lawsuit. The lawsuit. Uncle Jack. Uncle Jack convinced me that this was gonna-- this was gonna finance my TV show. It was gonna prove to Dad that I was my own person, and every time that I got cold feet, every time that Dad made me an offer, it was Uncle Jack. Uncle Jack told me not to quit! He said that everything was gonna just work out, but nothing has worked out!
Ashley: Okay, I'm sorry. I'm sor--
Abby: No, I don't want a hug. I don't want a hug. I don't want to cry. Honestly, I just want to do this to Uncle Jack.
Ashley: Okay. I don't blame you for being angry with him. But don't worry. I'm gonna handle Uncle Jack.
Jack: Even if Victor wins this lawsuit, it doesn't mean you and I won't get our hands on Beauty of Nature.
Tucker: You're an optimist, Jack. I gotta give you that.
Jack: Well, I have a way of making things happen, particularly when the end result is me running this new conglomerate.
Tucker: Oh, really? Well, we have nothing in writing guaranteeing that. In fact, as you reminded me, the only contract that exists between us is for you to run Jabot. And that was predicated on your delivering Beauty of Nature.
Jack: Whoa, whoa. What are you saying?
Tucker: I'll tell you. "Item 14, paragraph 2-- failure to secure said company will result in immediate suspension."
Jack: I haven't failed. This lawsuit hasn't been decided yet.
Tucker: You come up with a way to bring me Beauty of Nature, and I'll reinstate you. Until then...
Victoria: (Sighs) Can I get you anything? Coffee? A drink?
Nick: If I mix alcohol with anything right now, I'm liable to hurt someone.
Victoria: (Sighs) This is such a huge mess. I feel like I'm partly responsible.
Nick: You know, if you want to play the blame game, let's do that. Let's start at the top. Dad, Adam... hell, I could even throw Sharon into the mix.
Victoria: Oh, gosh, it doesn't matter who's responsible, at least not to the people who lost their jobs because of this fallout from the lawsuit. You know, I ran into one of them today. She had her little boy with her. I never meant for this to happen. And Abby--did you see her face? The poor kid. She just wants her dad to love her.
Nick: Good luck with that.
Victoria: (Sighs) I know. I-I should call her and check on her and make sure she's okay. Abby, hi, it's Victoria. Um... I'm sorry about what happened to day. Call me, all right?
Victoria: Do you think we made a mistake going up against Dad?
Nick: Vick, Dad has lied to us and used us and manipulated us since the day we were born. We finally get sick of it and stand up for ourselves. You know what? We didn't make a mistake. We're just surviving.
Victoria: Do you think we will?
Nick: I'm not giving up, if that's what you're asking.
Victoria: (Sighs) Okay. All right. So what next?
Nick: Well, first we should probably wait till we hear from Leslie. Or I could just go and beat the crap out of Adam.
Michael: These original?
Victor: Thank you, Hillary. If I need anything else, I'll let you know.
Michael: All right, these are all signed by Adam during his time here. They're dated. Two are notarized. That should be good enough for Judge Phelps.
Man: I'll deliver this to Judge Phelps right away.
Michael: Right. We will be waiting top hear from him. Thank you very much.
Michael: All right. The deposition is set for tomorrow. Be ready. I don't have to tell you what's at stake.
Adam: No, Michael, you donít.
Victor: Judge Phelps will render his decision promptly. When that has happened, I shall go to the police and tell them what I know about Skye Lockhartís death. Then you and I both get what we want.
Adam: I don't know about that. Sharon knows what I'm doing.
Victor: You secured her freedom.
Adam: But it's the way that I'm doing it that bothers her. The look on her face was that of utter shame.
Victor: Mm-hmm. She'll be grateful in the long run. Trust me.
Adam: Not everyone's like you. The ends don't always justify the means.
Victor: Son, not everyone is like me. But you are.
Adam: I'll see you tomorrow.
Victor: You have done a good deed, Adam.
Victoria: Well, hi.
Sharon: Um, would you mind if I come in?
Victoria: Uh, no. Come on in. Sure.
Nick: Did Adam send you?
Sharon: I came here to apologize for my part in this.
Nick: Dad sending you to do Adam's dirty work?
Sharon: I came to tell you that I don't agree with what Adam's doing, and I'm gonna do everything I can to stop him.
Sharon: Because it's right for everybody.
Nick: Dad's not gonna like you interfering.
Sharon: I know. I have to go. I know you're worried that Victor may have won. But this isn't over.
Ashley: Abby, you have every right to be angry with Jack, but you have to take responsibility for your own choices.
Abby: So you're saying that I got what I deserved, is that it?
Ashley: Well... (Sighs) Honey, I don't ever want to see you get hurt. But did you learn something from this?
Abby: I did. I did. I learned never trust anybody.
Ashley: Honey, what about trusting yourself? When you wanted to get out of the lawsuit, you should have.
Abby: Yeah. Yeah, you're right. I should have. I should have. Everything wouldn't be messed up with Victoria or Nick or Uncle Jack or Dad.
Ashley: It's not to late to fix things.
Abby: (Scoffs) I wouldn't even know where to begin. Well, you're not gonna tell me?
Abby: (Scoffs) It's as good a time as any to start acting responsibly. It actually just sent chills up my spine saying that.
Ashley: Good luck, Honey.
Jack: Hey, Kiddo, how's it--
Jack: Abby upset with me?
Ashley: Not half as upset as I am.
Jack: You two break this together?
Ashley: I know you pushed her into the lawsuit, Jack.
Jack: I advised Abby. I saw how Victor had manipulated and controlled Victoria and Nicholas' life. I didn't want to see that happen to your daughter.
Ashley: You were not looking out for Abby! You wanted to screw Victor! So just admit it.
Jack: And what if that was the case? I can't think of anybody who deserves it more. We finally had a chance to beat him at his own game.
Ashley: And now what, Jack? Now he goes after you, right? Every time the two of you go at it, somebody gets hurt, and this time, it could have been my daughter! And is it really worth it? Just so you could bring Victor down?
Jack: This wasn't just about Victor! This was about Jabot!
Ashley: What are you talking about?
Jack: I was finally C.E.O. again, running the company, just the way Dad envisioned it. And I promised myself I would do whatever I could to see that that didn't change.
Ashley: So how does pushing Abby into a lawsuit with her father help you keep your job? Tucker put us in charge. He agreed that we would run the company. Remember that?
Jack: No, he agreed that you would run the company. Me? If I didn't deliver Beauty of Nature, your boyfriend said that I would be relieved of my duties. So, yes, I advised Abby to sue her father, because Tucker wanted Beauty of Nature, and that's the one way I knew I could get it.
Victoria: Abby, hi.
Abby: Hey. Hi. A gift for my Goddaughter.
Victoria: Another one?
Abby: My not-so-subtle way of finding out if you still want me to be the Godmother.
Victoria: Of course I do.
Abby: I couldn't help but think of what Dad said. You know, that you only picked me to help you win the lawsuit.
Victoria: You are Lucyís Godmother no matter what happens with the suit.
Nick: Dad was just doin' a number on your head, and it won't be the last time.
Abby: I just keep hoping he'll change.
Victoria: He wonít. But you know what? Neither will we, and you'll always be our sister, no matter what happens with the suit or in the future.
Nick: We're family, all right? You better get used to it.
Abby: Well, then in that case, I will totally help you plan Lucyís christening.
Victoria: You will?
Abby: I will. I have so many ideas. (Laughs)
Victoria: Thank you. (Laughs)
Nick: I have no ideas.
Victoria: He never does. Hey, why don't we do it over a family dinner? Are you up for a family dinner?
Nick: On one condition.
Nick: No lawsuit talk.
Abby: Oh, deal. Yeah, deal.
Victoria: (Laughs) Easy. I'll open this at dinner.
Adam: (Sighs) Look, I don't know what's goin' on. I... I-I wasn't sure if I should pack my things or--or what. I thought you'd be here when I got back. Where'd you go?
Sharon: I went to see Nick and Victoria.
Adam: Why'd you do that?
Sharon: I needed to talk to them.
Adam: About what?
Sharon: I told them that I would get you to recant your story.
Jack: Oh. (Sighs) A friendly face.
Phyllis: (Sighs) Um, why didn't you tell me that you were the one who talked Abby into filing a lawsuit against Victor?
Jack: Oh, see, can-- can I just have a drink first, please? (Sighs) Okay, so tell me what a rotten bastard I am for using my niece to get at Victor only so I could... get Beauty of Nature to keep my job.
Phyllis: Oh. Okay, so Tucker's behind this. Jack, why didn't you tell me?
Jack: I didn't want to get you involved.
Phyllis: But I am involved. We're involved. That's how I thought it was.
Jack: No, it--it is...
Phyllis: It is?
Jack: How it is. I...
Phyllis: Well, when two people are in a relationship, they communicate about things.
Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah. Can we do that from now on?
Jack: Can we maybe start right now?
Phyllis: Okay, let's start now.
Jack: I got suspended from my job because I didn't deliver Beauty of Nature for Tucker.
Phyllis: That's horrible. I'm sorry. Is there anything else you want to communicate to me?
Ashley: So... (Sighs) Is there anything you want to tell me? You know, about Jack and Abby and Beauty of Nature?
Tucker: What do you want me to say?
Ashley: I don't know. I guess I-I'm hoping that you're gonna tell me that what Jack said isn't true. But then, I know Jack, and I don't really know you, do I?
Tucker: (Sighs) Listen, gettin' Abby to sue Victor was Jack's deal.
Ashley: You proposed to me. We were planning a wedding. I mean, we were planning a life together. And the whole time, you were using my brother and my daughter just to get one up on Victor?
Tucker: You wanted Beauty of Nature, too.
Ashley: Not at the expense of my family! Don't you realize they mean more to me than anything?
Tucker: I do. I know that. They mean a lot to me, too.
Ashley: Oh, God.
Tucker: This was just business.
Ashley: Oh, no, donít. Don't say that to me. Don't tell me it was just business. You sound just like Victor. Please. You're not just like him, are you?
Ashley: I mean, do you just use people no matter who they are? You don't care how you hurt them, just so you get what you want? Are you just like him? Really? Are you gonna try and tell me that you can tie it up into a nice little box and--and somehow, none of this affects us?
Tucker: It doesn't change the way I feel about you.
Ashley: It changes the way I feel about you.
Tucker: McCall, Unlimited is my life's work. It's not my life. You are. If I don't have you, all of it-- the money, the power, all the material things-- they don't mean anything. You believe that, don't you?
Ashley: I don't know.
Phyllis: Mm, don't stop.
Jack: I have no intention of stopping.
Phyllis: No, no, going after Beauty of Nature. Don't stop that.
Jack: Oh, wait, are we really gonna talk about business right now?
Phyllis: Yeah, I can multitask.
Jack: I canít.
Phyllis: I can. Everybody knows that Adam is lying, and if we prove that, Victor will lose the lawsuit for sure.
Jack: Yeah, and Newman will have to go public.
Phyllis: Yeah, exactly. And you'll get your hands on Beauty of Nature again.
Jack: Or Adam will get away with lying in court all over again.
Phyllis: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Adam: Oh, Sharon. You shouldn't have told Nicholas and Victoria you were gonna convince me to recant.
Sharon: I thought you said I made you want to be a better man.
Adam: You do.
Sharon: Well, then do the right thing.
Adam: That is what I'm trying to do right now.
Sharon: By admitting to a crime you never committed?
Adam: If it gets these charges against you dropped, then so be it.
Sharon: No, no. You don't have to do this.
Adam: My father said that he will testify for you if I do this.
Sharon: It's not worth it!
Adam: Sharon, there are charges being brought up against you for murder, okay? Murder. All because you tried to help me, and I'm just trying to make that right.
Sharon: Not this. You don't have to resort to being the old Adam who lied and schemed to get what he wants.
Adam: Even if it means getting your freedom?
Sharon: Especially if that's what you want, because I don't want it like this. I know you're better than this.
Adam: You seem to be the only person who thinks that nowadays.
Sharon: Well, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks. And it doesn't really matter what I think. What matters is that you believe in yourself. Stop hating yourself for the man you used to be. Just start being the man who I know you are.
Adam: It's too late, anyway. I already told the judge that I signed the damned documents myself.
Sharon: (Sighs) Then just go-- go back there and tell them the truth. At least then, you can hold your head high. You can be proud of yourself.
Adam: (Sighs) Sharon, don't you see? I'm just trying to help you.
Sharon: Help yourself. Tell them you lied.
Victor: Just give me the quarterly reports, all right? Continue production. Thank you. Thank you, Sir.
Abby: (Clears throat) I called ahead, so we have a table. Oh, there it is.
Nick: Little sis has got pull in all the hot spots.
Abby: Mm-hmm, I am the Naked Heiress.
Victoria, Well, just so long as you keep your clothes on tonight.
Abby: (Scoffs) Oh, you guys are so boring.
Victoria: We are boring. Very boring, and old, and... (Sighs)
Next on "The Young and the Restless"
Victor (to Billy): Rumors of my company's demise are greatly exaggerated.
Spencer: Why are you lying to your mother?
Meggie: (To Deacon) Maybe you should just dig and come through, get it?
Deacon: (Whispering) What do you want me to do, bust you out?
