Kevin: That's right, Lauren. I know all about you. I know that this whole night was just a big setup. Our first date was nothing but a lie.

Lauren: Where is this coming from? I mean, why would you think that I--

Kevin: All right, just drop the act, okay? I'm not stupid. You were hoping that I would say something, incriminating myself and prove that all those ugly rumors were true. Tell me, who put you up to this, huh? Who else is in on this with you? It doesn't matter. I fell in love with you. You knew that I cared, and it meant nothing to you.

Lauren: Kevin...

Kevin: How could you do this? How--how could you do this to me?

Raul: You know who hurt Brittany?

Paul: I think it's possible I'm on the right track.

Bobby: Don't think. Either you know or you don't know.

Paul: I have a strong theory. It's a little out there.

Bobby: All right, tell us.

Paul: Think about it-- someone who used to be on the payroll, someone with big-time problems, someone with a big-time grudge, not to mention the know-how to make it happen-- Kevin Fisher. Mr. Twisted himself.

(Doorbell rings)

Michael: Victor.

Victor: What the hell are you doing here? Do you realize what time it is?

Michael: Yeah, it's late. I'm sorry.

Victor: Come in.

Victor: Is this an emergency or what?

Michael: Well, yes and .. The emergency's all mine. I'm sure you could care less about it, and yet, uh...

Victor: And yet what?

Michael: I couldn't think of anyone else that I could talk to about this. Is that weird or what?

Victor: This about business?

Michael: Not even remotely.

Victor: So it's personal.

Michael: Yeah.

Victor: Well, sit down. You want a drink? Tequila?

Michael: Yeah, but I didn't mean to barge in and suck up all your liquor, but, yeah, I'd love a tequila.

Victor: So what's the problem?

Michael: Well... I have a brother. I have a brother. Actually, he's a half brother. Kevin Fisher. It's him. Maybe it isn't him. Maybe it's me. I don't know.

Victor: I don't know what the hell you're talking about, but I think you'd better have this one.

Nick: All right, I call.

Sharon: You sure?

Nick: She's asking me if I'm sure. Yeah, I'm sure. Let's see 'em.

Cassie: Come on, Mom.

Sharon: Okay, two pair, thank you very much.

Nick: Oh, man!

Noah: Wait, Mom, is this good enough to beat?

Cassie: Three aces and two 10s. Noah wins again.

Nick: Yeah, that's good enough. Yeah, just take all the money. Leave your old man with nothing. I'll be all right.

Noah: Okay.

Sharon: My son, the card shark.

Nick: Well, since I have no more money, it's time for you two to go to bed.

Noah: Oh, do we have to?

Sharon: Yeah, honey, you should have been in bed hours ago.

Cassie: But we're having so much fun.

Nick: Hey, we'll do it again real soon.

Noah: You promise?

Nick: Yeah, we'll make it a weekly thing.

Sharon: Yeah,we'll have family night.

Noah: This has been the best night ever, Mommy.

Kay: You've been avoiding me.

Jill: What the hell is going--what are you doing?

Kay: Waiting up for you.

Jill: My god. Where did you get this?

Kay: Oh, Jill, you didn't call every liquor store in town, for heaven's sakes. No, I, um... obviously, you did try, but I still found one that would take my money, and they would deliver.

Kay: Oh, dear. You think I was stupid enough to buy only one bottle? You know, if I want more, I can always get more.

Jill: What the hell are you thinking of? Are you crazy? Why are you looking at me like that?

Kay: Yes, why, indeed?

Kay: You really don't know.

Jill: Don't know what? What are you talking about?

Kay: Nothing.

Jill: Oh, no, no, no, no. No, you are not gonna say something like that and then just drop it.

Kay: Please, I don't want-- please, I don't want to argue. I'm in no mood.

Jill: No, you're not in any mood to do anything but drink, are you?

Kay: Well, yes, I guess not.

Jill: So are you gonna ask me about my day?

Kay: What about your day?

Jill: I don't know what about my day, but that's what mothers and daughters do. They say, "how was your day, dear?" 'Cause obviously I don't have to ask you about yours.

Jill: Mother, what is it? Is something wrong?

Michael: Victor, you're a man who's all about family, right?

Victor: Some people say I'm not.

Michael: When someone is related to you, does that automatically give them a right to your protection, to your concern?

Victor: You're talking about your half brother. Is that it?

Michael: Yeah, I won't go into the truly sad story of his lousy childhood.

Victor: Uh-huh. Did you grow up together?

Michael: We overlapped. I was older, different fathers. It was an ugly scene.

Victor: And he turned out to be the bad apple?

Michael: We both did. Bad apple--I guess I'm the one you can still make into an apple pie, but as far as Kevin is concerned, I don't know. Well, he may be a lost cause.

Victor: So he's in trouble now. Is that it?

Michael: There are people after him, and people he may well have harmed. They're going through gymnastics now trying to get him to incriminate himself.

Victor: He's not dealing with the law, is he?

Michael: Not yet. But they are trying to entrap him, you know? If these people were the law, they wouldn't be allowed to do what they're doing now.

Victor: So what can I do to help?

Michael: It's just absolutely ridiculous to come here in the middle of the night asking you these existential questions, but you know, I need to understand. What am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to let nature take its course? Just let Kevin fall into this trap they have prepped for him? Or am I supposed to step in and act like a brother?

Victor: Do you actually know what it means to feel like a brother?

Lauren: I understand why you'd be upset.

Kevin: You understand nothing, Lauren, okay?

Lauren: Help me understand. Talk to me.

Kevin: The day we met at the boutique... the minute I saw you... I thought you were so beautiful. I couldn't take my eyes off you. I just assumed you'd ignore me, you know, like everybody else does, but you didnít. You were so nice to me. Yeah, you were warm. You were friendly. Do you remember any of this?

Lauren: Oh, of course I do. You were very sweet.

Kevin: You told me how rare it was to find somebody in this world that was actually kind, and then you said that the older people got, the less likely they were to judge somebody before they really got to know them.

Lauren: Yes, I did.

Kevin: So was any of that true, or was it just a bunch of empty words?

Lauren: No, that was sincere. That's the truth.

Kevin: Because you didn't know who I was then. Then I told you my name. You probably heard all the stories, you know, and you just assumed they were true. And you never even gave me a chance.

Lauren: I want to give you a chance now. Come on; let's work through this, please.

Kevin: No, no, no! There's no way that's gonna happen, not after you made a total fool out of me.

Lauren: Kevin, just--

Kevin: No, no, no! Okay? That's enough. No more games! It's gonna end here now tonight!

Bobby: Fisher-- you think he did it.

Raul: That never would have occurred to me in a million years.

Paul: All I know is that he had the motive and the technical smarts to pull it off.

Bobby: All right, get real. The guy's a bookkeeper.

Paul: He was an electrician's apprentice for a good many years.

Raul: You're kidding.

Paul: And from what I understand, he had a real aptitude for it.

Bobby: Then he could have wired up that pole himself.

Paul: All right, listen to me. When you fired him, did he make any threats?

Bobby: Oh, sure. It was big talk. I didn't think much about it. Why should I?

Paul: Anything specific?

Bobby: Yeah, when he got canned, he wanted to know who did it, like it had to be somebody else's fault.

Paul: And?

Bobby: Well, first, he thought it was J.T. Then he brought up Brittany. He called her a name. I told him to shut his mouth.

Raul: Well, I'm sure Kevin knew you had a thing for her. You don't exactly hide it.

Paul: All right. Anything else?

Bobby: Yeah, he made a crack that he understood why everybody was trying to shut me down. I wasn't exactly shaking in my boots.

Raul: So this was his way of getting back at you, by hurting Brittany.

Paul: Look, it fits the pattern. He has a beef with a man--

Bobby: Coward's too much of a chicken to face anyone head on, so he looks for the nearest girl.

Raul: How convenient, since he was already mad at her.

Bobby: It's so obvious now, looking back on it.

Raul: Okay, so what do we do with this information?

Bobby: What do we do? We find Fisher. We twist his arm back, break it in a couple places and make him cough up the truth.

Kay: All right, Jill, I will bite. Tell me, how was your day, daughter dearest?

Jill: Very long.

Kay: So I gathered. Anything interesting?

Jill: I saw mama.

Kay: Elizabeth is back in town?

Jill: Yes, I was surprised to hear from her, too. I thought that she'd gone back to England, but she'd been spending time with Greg out west.

Kay: Well, why doesn't she come visit with me? You told her that I'm drinking again, right?

Jill: Well, she remembers only too well what that was like, and she said she couldn't bear it. Mother, what happened today that you can't tell me?

Kay: Nothing.

Jill: I don't believe you.

Kay: Then don't believe me!

Jill: I thought you were making so much headway with this battle.

Kay: And I told you not to set your expectations too high.

Jill: That's right. You did. And then I told you that I was proud of you, thinking that that might count for something, but evidently not.

Cassie: Noah's right. It's been a long time since we all spent a whole evening together, I mean really together, enjoying our family.

Sharon: You're talking about me, aren't you?

Cassie: Well, I mean, you've been kind of out of it lately. Sometimes I talk to you and I don't even think you hear me.

Sharon: Baby, you're right. I have been preoccupied lately, and I'm so sorry if you felt neglected.

Cassie: You just look so worried all the time.

Sharon: Well, I have been caught up in some grownup stuff, but that's over now. And we're gonna spend lots of time doing stuff together as a family. I promise.

Nick: All right, that's enough stalling. You guys get upstairs and get in your P.J.s.

Sharon: Good night.

Noah: Good night.

Cassie: I love you, Mom.

Sharon: I love you, too, sweetie.

Cassie: Good night.

Sharon: Good night.

Nick: Good night, sweetie.

Cassie: Good night.

Nick: So, Mrs. Newman, isn't it time for some adult games?

Lauren: I agree. There's been enough deceit.

Kevin: Oh, really? Are you sure? 'Cause how much is enough, Lauren?

Lauren: You know, now that I've spent this time with you, I realize there is just-- there's so much more to you than people know. I've seen a side that they havenít. If you want to start fresh, you know, I really want to do that. Please.

Kevin: If you only knew how proud I was...

Kevin: Walking into that club with you tonight. It was the best moment of my life.

Kevin: Now here we are a couple hours later and this is the worst.

Lauren: I'm sorry.

Kevin: No, and everyone there knew, didn't they? That's why they were all being so polite. They knew I was being set up... by you, my first real love. And now you've betrayed me.

Lauren: I'm so sorry. I mean, you have to believe me.

Kevin: No, no, no, no, no! You know what? I will never ever believe anything that you say to me again ever!

Kevin: How crazy is this? Look at this. This is the love of my life, and she's scared out of her wits trying to get away from me! God, have you ever seen anything so pathetic?

Lauren: Oh, my God.

Paul: Look, none of us should act on this information. It's all just hearsay. We don't know any of it for a fact.

Bobby: Come on, Williams. It all adds up.

Raul: The list just keeps getting longer and longer. First Lily, then Colleen and now Brittany. And these are just the victims we know about.

Bobby: How long we gonna let him get away with it, till someone else gets hurt?

Paul: Hey, I'm with ya. I want Fisher to pay for every slimy thing he's ever done. If you want to see it through, if you want to see this guy in prison, we cannot afford to do anything rash.

Raul: Okay, so then what are we missing? What's it gonna take to get this guy arrested?

Paul: Well, look, the case I've built is all circumstantial.

Bobby: Yeah, I know guys in Walworth. That's all it took.

Paul: It's true, but it is much easier to get a conviction with physical evidence.

Raul: Smoking gun.

Paul: Exactly. And I will find it, and we are very close. I can feel it.

Bobby: If there's anything I can do, let me know.

Paul: You two will be the first.

Bobby: Fisher.

Nick: Well, that's a good idea. A nightcap.

Sharon: You want to tell me what's been bothering you?

Nick: What do you mean, what's been bothering me? Tonight was an awesome evening.

Sharon: Yeah, but a few times you seemed distracted. Anything to do with your father?

Nick: I guess. I offered to be a character witness at his sentencing hearing. He turned me down flat.

Sharon: Oh, hon, I'm sorry.

Nick: Yeah, me too. There's one other thing bothering me.

Sharon: What's that?

Nick: Cameron Kirsten.

Kay: Proud of me for what?

Jill: For trying.

Kay: I haven't given up.

Jill: No, that's why you're sucking down that booze after managing to stay sober for one whole day, Katherine.

Kay: Jill, you cannot control my drinking. Don't you understand I am the only one who can do anything about this?

Jill: Right, and God forbid you'd never stop on my account, would you?

Kay: No, no.

Jill: Did somebody come to see you today?

Kay: I want to talk to you about that. No, no, now I told you to leave him out of it, but no, no, no, no. You had to talk to him, you had to meet with him, and you had to ask him to help me.

Jill: So are you saying that he came here? He was here?

Kay: Yes, Jill, he was here! Why couldn't you just leave it alone?

Jill: What, did you argue with him?

Kay: He feels like he can't trust me anymore.

Jill: What did you do to make him feel that way? What was it, the liquor?

Kay: It has nothing to do with the liquor.

Jill: Well, then what?

Kay: I don't want to discuss it! Come on, now that's the end of it. I mean it!

Jill: Oh, my God. Sometimes you can the most aggravating woman in the world!

Kay: Like mother, like daughter. (Doorbell rings)

Jill: Are you expecting someone?

Kay: No, no.

Jill: I'll get it.

Kay: Whoever it is, tell them to go away, because I'm in no mood.

Jill: Oh, my goodness. Oh, how wonderful to see you, Arthur.

Lauren: Kevin... I want you to listen to me.

Kevin: Why should I?

Lauren: It doesn't have to be this way. Whatever you're feeling right now, however bad it may seem, things are okay. You're still in control. There's no need to make them worse.

Kevin: Worse? This is it. This is rock bottom.

Lauren: No, Kevin.

Kevin: Yes, Lauren. You know... in a way, it's kind of freeing, knowing that there's nothing left to be afraid of.

Lauren: I'm begging you. Throwing a life away is not the answer. A gun is not the answer.

Kevin: Make no mistake, Lauren. I'm gonna use this gun tonight. Believe me, I'm gonna use it.

Kevin: What I haven't decided is who I'm gonna use it on.

Victor: I think family is about loving the essence of a person. We do not love someone for what they've become, but for what we know they are.

Michael: Is that a recipe for forgiveness?

Victor: Well, that depends. Do you think you can help your brother?

Michael: Not if he finds out how they've been treating him. Every bad thing he's ever thought about himself will be confirmed in spades. He's gonna feel like a man who has nothing to lose. And believe me, that's just not a good place.

Victor: And is the trap being set for him now?

Michael: As we speak.

Victor: Well, I'm sorry to hear that. But if you really want to help him, Michael, then you better do it right now. Don't waste another minute. All right?

Michael: Yeah.

Victor: Good luck to you.

Michael: Yeah.

Sharon: What about Cameron?

Nick: You remember how I told you I was gonna go talk to the police; see if they've learned anything new about his disappearance?

Sharon: Have they?

Nick: They're being very tight-lipped. Detective Weber won't tell me a thing.

Sharon: Well, what do you think that means?

Nick: It could mean they're onto something. I don't know. It just doesn't make any sense. Cameron's head of this huge software company. He has tons of employees, and nobody's heard a thing. Wait a minute.

Sharon: What?

Nick: Cameron's not married.

Sharon: So?

Nick: So maybe he has a girlfriend. That would make sense. I wonder if the police have checked out that angle.

Sharon: He never mentioned anyone he was involved with.

Nick: Yeah, but the point is if that someone does exist, then maybe she's heard from him.

Sharon: Surely the police have thought of that possibility.

Nick: Well, it's worth mentioning it to them anyway.

Sharon: Honey, I'm sure Detective Weber is covering all the bases, and what I don't understand is why are you so concerned about this? I mean, Cameron Kirsten is not your responsibility, and you two weren't friends.

Nick: Sharon, the deal he and I were working on together was huge. It would have been a major feather in my cap if I'd have put it together. It would have proven to everyone that I am a player in the big business world. Newman Enterprises is in a real crisis right now. And I need all the help I can get. I mean, Cameronís fate could have a huge impact on all of us. Sharon, what's wrong? What is it?

Jill: Look who came back.

Kay: Yes, so I see.

Jill: We were just, um, talking about you, Arthur. Weren't we, Mother?

Arthur: Oh, really? Saying what?

Kay: Well, I didn't expect to see you back here, at least not so soon.

Arthur: I haven't changed my mind, Katherine. But I wanted you to know my decision. I didn't want to keep you in the dark. You see, I know how that feels, being shut out.

Jill: Look, obviously, you two have things to sort out, so I'll leave you alone.

Arthur: Don't go. Please stay. Your mother and I do have a great deal to talk about, but I'd like you to be here.

Nick: I've upset you. I'm sorry. All this talk about Cameron... I shouldn't lay my worries on you.

Sharon: Well, I can think of a way you could make it up to me.

Nick: Oh, yeah, what's that?

Sharon: A kiss would help.

Nick: No problem.

Nick: A toast... to my beautiful wife.

Sharon: You know, I'm sure the kids are asleep by now. This couch is pretty comfortable.

Nick: Well, I have a better idea.

Sharon: Yeah, what?

Nick: Why don't we get the cards, go upstairs and play a few more hands?

Sharon: You thinking about strip poker?

Nick: Mm-hmm. Or we could just forget the cards, get right to it.

Sharon: Mmm. That works for me. Why don't you go upstairs and take your shower? And I will clean up down here.

Nick: Okay. Promise me you'll hurry.

Sharon: (Whispers) I promise.

Paul: Hey.

J.T.: Hey.

Paul: Been waiting long?

J.T.: A few minutes.

Paul: Did you ring the bell?

J.T.: Yeah. Nobody answered.

Paul: Really? You'd think Lauren would be here by now.

J.T.: When I left her, she was still hanging out at the dance with Kevin.

Paul: How'd they seem?

J.T.: Fine. Yeah, she had him eating out of her hand.

Paul: Great. I'm glad to hear things were going so well.

J.T.: You don't sound like it.

Paul: Well, now it's late, and I just hate to see her spending one minute more than she has to with that guy.

J.T.: Yeah, I hear that. I got off pretty easy myself tonight, you know? All I had to do was avoid the jerk, have fun with Colleen.

Paul: Yeah. No messages.

J.T.: So did you make any progress?

Paul: Yeah, I found out all kinds of interesting things.

J.T.: Like what?

Paul: Well, suffice it to say, when I put all the pieces together, it looks like Fisher may be responsible for zapping your friend Brittany.

J.T.: No way.

Paul: Turns out he had training as an electrician. So he definitely had the knowledge to rig up an accident.

J.T.: Yeah, you know, and he was ticked at Brittany and Bobby Marsino. Damn. Yeah. Of course it was him. Well, so what? Do we go to the police now, or what?

Paul: We need proof. Listen, J.T., We need solid evidence so we can prove that it's Fisher.

J.T.: Yeah, he covered his tracks with Lily and the fire.

Paul: Listen, he cannot know that we are investigating this. He is too clever, and he's too thorough. So if there is something linking him to the electrocution attempt, something physical, he would just dump it.

J.T.: Oh, man. I just thought about something.

Paul: What?

J.T.: Colleen and her friends broke into Kevinís apartment.

Paul: What? When did this happen?

J.T.: Right before the dance. Lily has a key. And believe me, I read her the riot act, but the thing is, she said she saw some stuff.

Paul: What kind of stuff?

J.T.: Like a tool box, styrofoam, duct tape-- all lying there in his apartment.

Paul: All right. That's not 100% conclusive.

J.T.: Yeah, but if any of that stuff was used at Marsino's, like from the same brand or batch or whatever... I watch "CSI" all the time. They talk about this stuff.

Paul: Yeah, there are definitely materials that would come into play if you're jury-rigging something electrical.

J.T.: So maybe this is it. Maybe this is the break we're looking for.

Paul: If Lily was right about what she saw, we have to move on this immediately.

J.T.: Man, wouldn't this be a trip, if this was all over tonight?

Paul: Yeah. It's after midnight.

J.T.: Too late to get a search warrant?

Paul: For Fisher's apartment? No, not necessarily. But you know what? I'm starting to worry about Lauren, though. She should be home by now.

J.T.: Was she supposed to meet you here after the dance?

Paul: Yeah. Let me call her on her cell and see what's going on.

Paul: Yeah, Lauren, it's me. Hey, what's the deal? You should have checked in by now. Call me as soon as you get this, will you?

J.T.: Who you calling now?

Paul: The Athletic Club. (Telephone rings) (Ring)

Gina: Athletic club dining room. Gina speaking.

Paul: Hey, Gina, it's Paul.

Gina: Hi, Paul. Hey, listen, I missed you at the dance tonight.

Paul: Hey, I wasn't there, but Lauren was. Is she still around by any chance?

Gina: No, she left quite some time ago.

Paul: How long is "quite some time"?

Gina: An hour, maybe more.

Paul: Was she alone?

Gina: No. She was with her date. They seemed pretty chummy. Hey, listen, Paul, is there something to be concerned about?

Paul: No, let's hope not. Thanks, Gina. (Telephone beeps)

J.T.: What's up?

Paul: Lauren took off with Fisher over an hour ago. Something's wrong here, J.T. Something's very wrong.

Lauren: So are you saying that you're gonna punish me for betraying you?

Kevin: That's what my whole life has been, a betrayal. First my rotten parents, then Mikey, my so-called protector, who walked out and left me there with them. You know, I have tried and tried and tried to make something good happen, you know, just one good thing. But people have always gotten in the way, you know? People like Lily and her parents and Colleen and her parents and that idiot J.T. And Bobby Marsino and your precious Paul all treated me with contempt, never giving me a chance, you know? It's like the whole world has been against me, Lauren, and that... a guy can only take that for so long, you know? And I thought that things were never gonna get better. And then I met you, you know, someone I believed in. I thought you were gonna change everything for me. But what do you know? Another lie. Another betrayal.

Lauren: And now you want someone to pay for your suffering.

Kevin: Oh, don't worry. It's not gonna be you.

Kevin: You're the only woman I ever truly loved. I-I wouldn't hurt you. I would never do that.

Lauren: And what about the others? What about the others that you mentioned?

Kevin: Well, they deserve to pay for the way that they've treated me.

Kevin: I won't go after them, either. What would be the point?

Lauren: Well, if you feel that way, then why are you still holding the gun?

Lauren: Oh, Kevin... no.

Kevin: Why shouldn't I? Give me one reason. Please, just give me one reason why I shouldn't do this. My whole... my whole life is just a big failure. I'm just... I'm a joke. I'm a joke.

Lauren: But this is not the way. This is not an option.

Kevin: You don't know what you meant to me. Lauren, you have no idea. You were my last hope. Now I know... I know that things are never, ever gonna get any better. No! Don't you... stay away. Just... just step back, Lauren, okay? Just stay away from me.

(Pounding on door)

Michael: Kevin! (Pounding on door)

Michael: Kevin, its Michael. Open up! Kevin! Come on. Game over! Kevin, open the door.

(Pounding on door)

Michael: Open the door! (Pounding on door)

Noah: This has been the best night ever, mommy.

Sharon: Aah!
