Simone: God, what am I supposed to do now? I -- I thought I found my soul mate, and then Rae was killed. She was the love of my life. And now I'm just drifting. Lord, will you please give me a sign or some type of reason to go on, some purpose to my life?

Simone: Jessica? Jess. Wait, it's me, Simone. Jess, wait up.

Noah: Paloma, I hate to see you so down. Why don't we go for a walk or something or get some pizza or --

Paloma: I'm not much fun to be with tonight, Noah.

Noah: It's understandable. You're heartbroken about your brothers.

Paloma: I just can't believe this is really happening. It doesn't feel real.

Noah: Yeah, none of us can believe it. I mean, it doesn't make sense, it doesn't seem right, you know, the judge making Luis and Miguel go to trial before they could build their case and then sentencing them on the same day. It's just not right.

Paloma: Yeah, it's horrible. They're both innocent.

Noah: You know, you'd think that the media would be covering this story, but they barely even touched it. I mean, a story like this? It's just --

Paloma: Whoever did this, whoever framed my brothers must have more power than we ever imagined.

Noah: I wish there was something I could do.

[Paloma sighs]

Paloma: I became a police officer because I thought there was justice in this world and I wanted to defend it.

Noah: Doesn't seem like there's much justice now, huh?

Paloma: There isn't. Noah, my brothers were railroaded. Miguel is going to be in prison for the rest of his life and Luis is going to be executed and they didn't do anything.

Noah: Yeah, but you should know that Ethan is doing everything in his power to find the people responsible for setting them up.

Paloma: I know he will, but that doesn't make me feel any better. What if he can't find this person? And why can't I think of something I can to do to help my brothers?

Noah: There is nothing to do.

Paloma: I'm so frustrated.

Noah: It's understandable. It's ok to be frustrated. But let's not just sit here and wallow in it, you know? Let's go out, get some fresh air, go for a walk. You can clear out the cobwebs.

Paloma: No, I don't want to leave Mama. She might wake up, and I don't want her to be alone.

Noah: Yeah, ok. But, Paloma, just don't give up hope, ok?

Paloma: Noah, I have no hope. This blackmailer is ruining our lives.

Pilar: Si, mija, but we can't let him do that.

Paloma: Mama, did we wake you?

Pilar: No, no, I wasn't really sleeping. My mind is just spinning with all the "what if" and "why" and "how."

Noah: Pilar, I am so sorry about everything that's happening.

Pilar: Thank you. Thank you, Noah. I heard you trying to get Paloma to go out, mija, and I think you should go. I'll be all right.

Paloma: Mami, I don't want to leave you alone.

Pilar: Paloma, por favor, I don't want you to sit here and just focus on this horrible situation. Go out, try to find some distraction before bitterness takes a hold of your heart and pushes out all your love and hope.

Guard: Ok, you can come in now. Have a seat.

Guard: So, Ms. Canton, you want to become one of us, be a prison guard here?

Woman: That's right.

Guard: Any experience?

Fancy: See for yourself. It's all there in my resume.

Sheridan: Took you long enough. Get in here.

Spike: Yes, ma'am. I got to be honest, I was a little surprised to get your call.

Sheridan: Really? Why?

Spike: I don't know, I just never thought that a mighty Crane would need my help.

Sheridan: Somehow, I highly doubt that, knowing my father and brother.

Spike: Whoa, time-out. Who ever said I worked for Alistair or Julian Crane?

Sheridan: No one. Let's just say you have a reputation for getting things done that no one else will do.

Spike: Well, now, that is the truth. I can get stuff done. But for a price, of course.

Sheridan: Mm-hmm. I know you'll do anything for money. That's why I contacted you. I need something done, something very important.

Spike: I'm standing right here.

Sheridan: Have you worked on what I asked for when I called you?

Spike: Oh, absolutely. I got what you need. But I was just thinking, what is the rush? I mean, really, why don't we have a drink and let's get to know each other better.

Sheridan: Hmm. I'm having wine.

[Tapping on jail bars]

Guard: How's it going, Luis?

Luis: What the hell do you want? Oh, what, you're back for some more fun? You want to use me as a human punching bag?

Guard: Nah. I just realized you didn't get your shower tonight.

Luis: Yeah, well, I'll take one tomorrow.

Guard: No, sir, I believe you'll take one tonight.

Ethan: Where -- where did he go?

Theresa: He got away.

Ethan: Well, we've got to get him. We've got to find him.

Theresa: No, no, it's over, Ethan, it's over, the blackmailer won. And you know what? We can never be together.

Ethan: Why do you keep saying this? That's the second time you've said that. What are you talking about?

Theresa: Because the blackmailer told me that Luis is going to die and Miguel is going to spend the rest of his life in prison if you and I are together.

Ethan: Theresa, he's still in here. I'm going to catch this thing.

Theresa: No, Ethan, let it go.

Ethan: What?

Theresa: It's no use.

Ethan: I'm not giving up. You're going to be fine. Your family's going to be fine. I've just got to catch this freak, ok?

Theresa: God, oh, please, Ethan, get him, please, or we're never going to be together.

Simone: Jessica, didn't you hear me calling you? What's going on?

Jessica: Leave me alone, Simone. There's nothing you can do to help.

Simone: Well, how do you know if you don't tell me what's wrong? What's going on?

Jessica: I just can't take it anymore. I won't let Spike do it. I can't.

Simone: Do what? What does that scum want you to do now?

Jessica: He wants to sell my baby.

Simone: Your baby? Jess... you're pregnant?

Jessica: Yes, I'm pregnant.

Paloma: Mama, you should go back to bed.

Pilar: I can't sleep, Paloma. I can't stop thinking about your brothers in that horrible prison. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Paloma: Not to me, either. Why did this happen to my brothers?

Noah: Look, it was obvious that they were set up. I mean, we just don't know who would do that or why.

Pilar: I know, we all know that Miguel and Luis are innocent of these horrible crimes. But you're right. Noah is right, we can't lose hope, because hope is what's going to get us through this, mija.

Paloma: I know I have to have hope, but it's so hard, Mama. Luis and Miguel shouldn't have to go through this. It's not right.

Pilar: I know. It doesn't make any sense, mija. Doesn't make any sense at all.

Guard: This resume is pretty impressive. It's tough to find people who have this kind of training and experience.

Fancy: Well, then, this is your lucky day. I'm here and I'm looking for a job.

Guard: What I don't understand is with this kind of background, you could have your pick of prisons to work in. Why'd you pick this one?

{Luis: I love you. You're a beautiful, amazing woman. I don't want you -- I don't want you to ever forget that. }

Spike: Oh, I'm just thinking -- you and me, we would make an amazing team, Sheridan.

Sheridan: You're a pretty confident man, aren't you, Spike?

Spike: Hey, when you got it, you got it. You know what I mean? But the thing is life is just so damn short. There's no reason why we can't take care of business and have a little bit of fun, too, right?

Guard: Whoo-hoo-hoo! How you like the service here at our spa? You feeling all clean and pretty now?

Ethan: Give it up, you bastard! When I find you, I'm going to make you pay, I swear to God! There you are, you freak.

Theresa: Catch him! It's our only chance!

Luis: You get out of here. You stay the hell away from me.

Guard: I'm not here to give you grief, Luis. Here.

Luis: Thanks. You friends with Sam or something?

Guard: Give me that wet mattress. Shove it through the bars.

Guard: I'll be back with a dry mattress.

Luis: That guy reminds me of somebody.

Guard: Well? Must have a reason for coming here for a job when you could go just about anywhere.

Fancy: Huh, it's no big mystery. My boyfriend got transferred near here, so I moved with him.

Guard: I wouldn't move anywhere for somebody I wasn't married to.

Fancy: Hmm. Well, I guess I got more faith than you. See, I figured that even if we're not married yet, we will be.

Guard: So you're pretty sure of this fella, right?

Fancy: Yeah, it'll work out, as long as I do everything I can to make it work.

Fancy's voice: And it will work out if I can work here as a guard. That way I can see Luis every day.

Sheridan: You are some kind of man, Spike.

Spike: Oh, that is what I am talking about. Man, we could make some beautiful music together. Don't you think? What the hell -- what the hell are you doing?!

Sheridan: You listen to me, you pig. I want you to do a job and nothing more. Do you understand?

Spike: Man, I'm just trying to be friendly.

Sheridan: Stop it! I don't want to be friends. I want you to do a job. And if you don't do it correctly, I swear you will spend the rest of your life in hell. Do you understand?

Spike: Well, I've already been there, but, yeah, yeah, I got it. You're the boss, lady. But I got to tell you, you don't know what you're missing. The Spike man is real good.

Sheridan: Well, I guess I'll just have to suffer.

Spike: No, what I mean is --

Sheridan: Shut up. Now, I will pay you whatever you want, but I want the information that you have on the prison.

Spike: Whoa, whoa, whoa. This doesn't have anything to do with Luis, does it?

Sheridan: Yes, of course this is about Luis. And as much as I hate to say it, I need your help.

Spike: Hey, wait a minute. If you're trying to tell me you want me to help you bust Luis out of prison, uh-uh, you'd better forget about it. The only people that bust out of prison and get away with it is on TV.

Ethan: Damn it, where the hell did he go?

Theresa: Where is he?

Ethan: Where did he go?

Theresa: Oh, my God, did he run away?

Ethan: I thought I heard his footsteps. I think I lost him. I think he's gone.

Theresa: You've got to get him. Everything depends on catching him, please.

Simone: Jessica, are you sure you're pregnant? I mean, have you seen a doctor?

Jessica: No. But I took one of those home pregnancy tests and it's supposed to be really accurate.

Simone: So it's true. And Spike knows. Oh, my God.

Jessica: I didn't mean for him to find out. He overheard me. And then when he did find out, I thought he was going to beat me up. But then he said he could make a lot of money if he sold my baby.

Simone: So you mean to tell me that he would sell his own baby?

Jessica: He said he's my husband, he owns me. Everything I have is his, including this baby.

Simone: Poor thing. You shouldn't have to go through anything like this. That evil man is the cause of all of your unhappiness.

Jessica: I know. That's why I've decided to just go away, get away from Harmony and just go someplace where Spike can't find me.

Simone: No, you can't do that. Leave town with your unborn baby? That's not the answer.

Jessica: Then what is?

Simone: I mean, I don't know, but running away from the people who really love you, your friends and your family, that just takes away any hope you might have.

Jessica: I don't have any hope, Simone.

Simone: Well, you should, because hope is what life is all about.

Paloma: I made us some tea, Mama.

Pilar: Oh, thank you, mija. You don't have to sit here with me.

Paloma: I don't want you to be alone.

Pilar: I want you to go out with Noah. I want you to -- just try to forget about your brothers, at least for a little while.

Paloma: But will you be ok?

Pilar: I promise I'll be fine. Now go. Get something to eat, get some fresh air. It'll help.

Noah: She's right, Paloma, it will help.

Paloma: Ok, but only if you're sure you're going to be fine.

Pilar: Si, mija. I'm going to drink some tea and then I'm going to try to get some sleep.

Paloma: Ok, but if you need anything, you can call me on my cell phone.

Pilar: Si, just go, huh? Try to enjoy yourself.

Paloma: We'll come back soon.

Pilar: Ok.

Noah: Good night, Pilar.

Pilar: Good night, Noah.

Pilar: Dear God. What's going to happen to my poor sons?

Guard: Here you go.

Luis: Thanks. Hey, you know, you never did say if you were friends with Sam or not.

Guard: Actually, I'm friends with your father.

Luis: My father, Martin? I don't need any help from Martin Fitzgerald.

Guard: I'm not talking about Martin.

Luis: Well, then who are you talking about?

Guard: I'm talking about your heavenly father, Luis. I was sent by him.

Spike: Oh, I'm sorry, lady, but if that's what you're asking me to do, I'm saying no. I'm not helping you break Luis out of prison. Uh-uh. So I guess this little meeting is over. And thanks for nothing.

Sheridan: Wait. That's not what I want you to do. It's something else.

Spike: Something else?

Sheridan: That's right. And if you know what's good for you, you'll do it, or I will make you regret it for the rest of your life.

Spike: Ok. Ok, what do you want me to do?

Ethan: Careful.

Theresa: Thank you.

Ethan: I lost him. You know, I was so close, I could've grabbed him, and he just disappeared into thin air. How does someone do that?

Theresa: I don't know, Ethan. I told you, he won. The blackmailer always wins.

Ethan: No, no, he didn't win. Quit saying that. Please don't give up hope. We're going to catch this freak.

Theresa: What if it's too late? You know, what if we catch him after Luis is executed?

Ethan: I told you, I'm going to delay the execution. I'm going to get an appeal, I promise you.

Theresa: What if every judge in the country is in the blackmailer's pocket?

Ethan: Then we -- we go to the press. We expose Judge Reilly and the governor for the weak-kneed politicians that they are, we put them on trial in the world of public opinion. That's what we do.

Theresa: You know what, if I thought that would've worked, I would've already been on every network shouting it to the world.

Ethan: Hey. We are going to catch this guy or girl -- whatever it is -- I promise you that.

Theresa: You know what? I'm not going to take the chance. The blackmailer told me that Luis and Miguel would go free if I just did what he wanted.

Ethan: You mean go back to Jared. Well, that's not going to happen. You should tell him how we feel about each other. He'll have to accept it and he'll let you go.

Theresa: Ethan, he -- he doesn't just want me to go back to Jared. There's something else that I need to do.

Ethan: What? What else does he -- she want you to do?

Theresa: He wants me to have Jared's baby.

Noah: Do you know where we are?

Paloma: The wharf.

Noah: Yes, but not just any part of the wharf. This is a very special part of the wharf.

Paloma: It is?

Noah: Yep.

Paloma: Why?

Noah: Because, when I was a little boy, this is where my mom used to bring us when we had some kind of problem, when we were working something out. She'd bring us here and we'd look out over the water and we'd wait for her to come up with a solution.

Paloma: Did she always find a solution?

Noah: Most of the time.

Paloma: Just looking at the water?

Noah: Mm-hmm.

Paloma: Well, I don't think it'll work for me, Noah. My problem doesn't have a solution. Unless the blackmailer is found and he confesses, Luis and Miguel will be lost.

Noah: Look, I know you feel hopeless, but, Paloma, I have seen much worse situations than this turn out ok.

Paloma: Worse than this?

Noah: Absolutely.

Paloma: Two innocent men in prison, one for the rest of his life and the other on death row? Worse than that?

Noah: Even worse than that.

Guard: Ok, everything looks in order here. And since we're short-staffed, I'm sure I can let you know right away whether you're hired or not.

Fancy: Great, thanks.

Guard: Just need to run your paperwork and check with the warden. Be right back.

Fancy: Oh, take your time. I've got nowhere to be right now.

Guard: Well, well. Who's this?

Fancy's voice: Oh, no. He was one of the guards at Luis' trial. Please, God, don't let him recognize me.

Guard: Don't I know you from someplace?

Spike: I mean, hey, when you had me checking out that prison, I had no idea that this is what you wanted me to do.

Sheridan: Well, now you know.

Spike: Listen, Sheridan, baby, look, please be reasonable, ok? I just don't think I can make this happen.

Sheridan: Wrong answer, Spike baby. You will make it happen or you'll answer to me.

Spike: Ok, ok, I'll make a few calls. I'll see what I can do. I'll try, ok?

Sheridan: See, that's why you get paid the big bucks, Spike man.

Spike: I said I'd try.

Sheridan: Ok. Make your calls, and make it happen as soon as possible.

Luis: So, what, you're an angel?

Angel: I'm here to tell you that you are very loved, that so many people are praying for you. I'm here to give you hope, Luis, to give you strength.

Luis: Hope, huh? Yeah, I could really use some of that right now. Ok, so what am I supposed to do?

Angel: Just keep doing what you've been doing, being strong, selfless. Be a good son, a good brother, as you were to me.

Luis: To you? What do you --

Luis: Antonio?

Ethan: Let me get this straight, just so I understand -- this nut case, this half woman, half man thing has ordered you to have Jared's baby?

Theresa: Yes.

Ethan: Well, that's not going to happen. There's no way that's going to happen, and you're not going to give into this maniac, all right?

Theresa: No, I don't have a choice. The blackmailer's got the power, Ethan, and it's my fault. If I would've just stayed away from you like he wanted, Luis and Miguel, they would be fine.

Ethan: Luis and Miguel do not want you to sacrifice your happiness for them. Give this some time. This blackmailer -- he's going to screw up, and when he does, I'm going to be there and we are going to catch him. We will.

Jessica: I'm sorry, Simone, but I don't see how I can have hope for anything now.

Simone: Sure you can, but not if you run away. You have to stay here and let your friends and your family help you through this. You've got to have a hope that you can be happy again, Jess.

Jessica: I wish I could be hopeful. I just feel like my life is over.

Simone: No, it's not. You're young, and pretty soon you're going to have a wonderful little person to care for. A baby could give you such focus, Jess. It could be the best thing that ever happened to you.

Jessica: Yeah. Maybe you're right. Maybe everything could be all right.

Paloma: Tell me the story, Noah, about a situation worse than my brothers' situation.

Noah: Well, um -- you know I've had kind of a shady past, right?

Paloma: You were a crook?

Noah: No, I wasn't a crook, I was a gambler. It's kind of different. But when you do that stuff, you come in -- well, you don't always interact with the most respectable people.

Paloma: Yeah, I can imagine.

Noah: And so there was this guy, and he was a normal guy and he was a nice guy, you know, and he got pulled into this closed-door poker game.

Paloma: Which means the stakes were really high.

Noah: Exactly, high stakes. And so he's playing this game, and he's actually doing kind of well, until these guys bust through the door, these two guys, and they start shooting up the place.

Paloma: Oh, dios mio.

Noah: Yeah, and they kill everybody there except for our guy.

Paloma: They killed everybody?

Noah: Everybody, except for our guy.

Paloma: And why didn't they kill him, too?

Noah: Well, they got the great idea to set him up.

Paloma: What?

Noah: To frame him for the murders, you know? And so they took the gun and they made him hold it so, you know, he got his fingerprints all over it, and then, you know, they held the gun to his head and they said if he ever tried to fight the conviction that they'd murder his entire family. And then they took the money and they left.

Paloma: That's horrible. Why didn't he tell the police what happened?

Noah: Well, he tried to, right, but they didn't believe him because, you know, they had the gun with the fingerprints and that's all the evidence they needed to convict him.

Paloma: So he was convicted?

Noah: He was, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

Paloma: For something he didn't do.

Noah: Exactly.

Paloma: Just like Miguel.

Noah: Exactly.

Paloma: Ok, but you said the story had a happy ending.

Noah: Mm-hmm.

Paloma: How did the guy get out of prison?

Noah: Well, first of all, he never gave in to despair, right, and he never lost hope.

Paloma: Mm-hmm.

Noah: And, well, what happened was eventually one of the guys was arrested for this other crime and he tried to make a deal with the police. Ok, either he's going to do some other crime and he's going to get arrested for it or someone close to him is going to implicate him. You know, the truth always comes out.

Paloma: Do you really think that could happen?

Noah: Absolutely. And that is why you can never give up hope.

Paloma: Wait a minute. That story is a lie, isn't it? You made up the whole thing.

Guard: You look familiar. Do I know you?

Fancy: Uh, I don't remember you, but that doesn't mean we haven't met.

Guard: You ever been to the Pig Sty? It's a bar where we all go hang out.

Fancy: No, I don't think so.

Guard: No, Arliss, you don't know her. She just moved here. Meet Faye Canton. She wants to hire on as one of us.

Arliss: Is that right?

Arliss: We've got to talk.

Guard: Sure.

Arliss: Outside.

Fancy: Oh, God! If he recognized me, I will never get to be close to Luis again.

Spike: You know I know what I'm talking about. Thanks, man. Pop!

Sheridan: Well?

Spike: Yeah, I told you I was good.

Sheridan: Do I get what I want or not?

Spike: Yeah, but we have to leave right now, though.

Sheridan: Why are we wasting our time talking? Come on, let's go.

Luis: Antonio? My God, is that you?

Angel: Stay strong, Luis, for everyone. Stay strong.

Luis: What is this? What's going on here?

Guard: Who are you talking to, Luis?

Luis: I -- nobody. Was talking to myself.

Guard: Talking to yourself? Didn't take you long to go nuts, did it? Hey. How'd everything get dried out so fast?

Luis: I don't know. Guess it's the dry air in here.

Guard: Dry air? Whatever.

Luis: What the hell is going on? Maybe he's right. Maybe he's right, maybe I am losing it.

Luis: Maybe it was all just a dream.

Theresa: You know I love you. And I will always love you, but I do need to go be with Jared.

Ethan: No, no, you don't.

Theresa: No, I do. No, I have to be with my husband to save my brothers.

Ethan: You don't have to do this.

Theresa: Ethan --

Ethan: You don't have to do this.

Theresa: I need to give you up forever.

Jessica: I don't know what I was thinking. Everything just seemed so messed up. All I could think of was running away.

Simone: But you know that wouldn't help, right? You need to stay here with the people who love you, your friends and your family. We'll be here for you. You know I'll be here for you.

Jessica: But what about my dad? He hates Spike. He even talked about how horrible it would be if I got pregnant by him.

Simone: Well, your dad has a lot of reason to hate Spike, but if he knew you were pregnant, I think that the only thing that he could think about is how wonderful it'll be to have another grandchild. Sam Bennett is a good man. He'll love your baby just like you will.

Jessica: You think so?

Simone: Of course I do. Sam loves you, and if you just trust in that love, you'll be fine.

Jessica: Thank you, Simone. You're such an amazing friend and I am so lucky you were here to stop me from leaving.

{Simone's voice: Can you give me a sign, lord, a purpose to my life? }

Simone: Actually, I don't think luck had anything to do with it.

Pilar: Dios Santo. How many years I lit a candle for Martin to come home. I never gave up on him. And he did come home. And my Antonio. How I prayed for my Antonio's return. He, too, came home. But now Martin and Antonio are gone. Even if I had them for a short time, at least they came home. I pray for my other sons now. I pray for my Luis and my Miguel. They are good boys, dear God. They don't deserve this. Please, please, dear lord, do not let Miguel spend the rest of his life in jail and don't let them murder my Luis. Please, God.

Paloma: That story wasn't true, was it? You made it up.

Noah: No, no, I heard it from somebody who knew somebody.

Paloma: Noah, don't lie to me. I can tell when you're lying. Your mouth does that funny little twitch.

Noah: Ok, I'm sorry, I was really just trying to make you feel better.

Paloma: I knew it.

Noah: No. Please don't be angry with me.

Paloma: Noah, I'm not angry with you. I want to thank you for telling me that story.

Noah: Thank me?

Paloma: Yeah. I know why you told me the story. You were trying to give me hope, and you did.

Noah: I did?

Paloma: Yeah. And you're right, as long as there's hope, there's always a chance for justice.

Noah: Hmm.

Paloma: I love you, Noah, for telling me that story. Thank you.

Fancy: Ok, Fancy, calm down and just pray that guy didn't recognize you.

Fancy: What's going on, guys? Is everything all right?

Guard: I'm sorry, Ms. Canton, but there's a problem.

Fancy's voice: Oh, no. Now I'm never going to get close to Luis.

Guard: Lopez-Fitzgerald, wake up. I got another roommate for you.

Luis: What the hell? What the hell do you want this time?

Guard: Shut up. Just face the wall again.

Guard: You two have fun now.

Luis: All right. Now, just so we're clear, you stay the hell away from me and I won't have to kill you.

Ethan: Can't do this. You can't do this... not after everything we've been through. You hear me? Theresa?

Theresa: I have to go, ok? Before I change my mind. Goodbye.

Ethan: Theresa? Theresa, don't do this!

Theresa: Goodbye.

On the Next Passions:

Luis: I know that I'm new to prison life, but what the hell happened to shaking hands when you first meet someone?

Fancy's voice: They know I'm Fancy Crane, heiress, not Faye Canton, prison guard.
