Eve: I took that from T.C., and I took it from Liz, and I took it from Aunt Irma, and I even took it from the girls. But I cannot take it from you, Julian. How could you call me a whore after everything that we've been through together, after everything that we've meant to each other? It's like you never really loved me at all.
Julian: Oh, good God! I worshiped you! I was blinded by your beauty, your voice, your heart, your -- you knew that and you took advantage of it. You used me. You loved me for my money. See, I was your ticket to a life far from what a poor girl like you could ever have achieved on her own. You seduced me with your voice and with that body, but you never loved me.
Eve: Julian, if you really believe that, then how could I have ever loved anyone like you?
Theresa: Hey. I wondered where you disappeared off to.
Whitney: Um, yeah. Sorry about that. I was looking for Chad. He left without saying anything to me. I called his phone, it's going straight to voicemail, so he must have it turned off.
Theresa: What about work? You know, I actually had Jared go over there and check on some reports, so maybe he just went back to work.
Whitney: Yeah. No. I called Crane. He's not there. And Valerie's already gone for the evening, so, you know, I can't talk to her either.
Theresa: Ok. So maybe he just went to go spend some alone time with Miles.
Whitney: Miles is with the sitter.
Theresa: Well, he probably just had something he needed to take care of, Whitney.
Whitney: No, no. This is about what I was telling you earlier. Chad is keeping a secret from me, Theresa -- a deep, dark secret.
Chad: Hello. No, no, I just got here. How long do you think you're gonna be? No, don't worry. You are well worth the wait.
Paloma: Fancy, stop it. Don't let your pride keep you from being with Luis just because he's having a hard time letting go of Sheridan.
Fancy: It isn't my pride, Paloma, it's my self-respect. I'm not some charity case desperate for any man who will be with me. I'm Fancy Crane. I can have my pick of men. I don't need a man who has to be convinced by his mother and his sister that he should be with me.
Paloma: Mama and I were not nagging him. We were just trying --
Fancy: I don't care, and I don't need your help. I'm gonna find a man who actually wants to be with me, a man who doesn't have to be convinced I'm worthy of him. So even if Luis decides he can't be with Sheridan, I don't care. I've decided I don't want Luis.
Luis: Sheridan, Sheridan, come on. You can't be serious about this. Sheridan.
Sheridan: I'm sorry, Luis. I hate hurting you. But I meant every word I said.
Sheridan: I'm married to Chris. He, James, and I are a family. That's what I want. I want us to stay a family. I'm Chris' wife, and I want to be James' mother. So, I can't be with you.
Luis: Sheridan --
Sheridan: I don't -- I don't -- I don't want to be with you. Luis, I've finally moved on, and there's no turning back.
Whitney: I first started noticing things were a little bit different right when we got back together at Rome, but I thought it was just my imagination -- we hadn't been together in a while, you know, but maybe I was wrong about that.
Theresa: Ok, earlier, when Chad was on the phone, I could sense that you were a little tense. So if it wasn't about work and if it wasn't about Miles, what is it about?
Whitney: I was trying to tell you earlier, but you passed out from the fever. You didn't hear what I was saying, so --
Theresa: Oh, honey, I am so sorry, I'm sorry.
Whitney: No, it's not your fault you're sick. Don't worry about it.
Theresa: No, no, no, you're always here for me. Come on, sit down and talk to me. Tell me everything. I'm awake right now, Whitney, and I am all ears, all ears.
Whitney: Ok, well, it's just a feeling, you know, and it's not like I have any kind of proof or anything, but I think Chad's having an affair.
Chad: I love Whitney. I really do. It's why I feel so damn guilty about all this.
Chad: Just not guilty enough to stop.
Valerie: What am I doing? Asking for trouble is what I'm doing. Getting involved with him when he works here.
Jared: So, the rumors are true.
Julian: What are you waiting for, Eve? We're finished here. Go home to T.C. and empty his drool cup and clean up the mess he's no doubt made in the bathroom. Those are considered acts of love in the middle class, aren't they?
Eve: God, I'd forgotten how cruel you can be.
Julian: Oh, come now. You've done some of your best work on your hands and knees.
Eve: God, Julian.
Julian: Which reminds me, I've yet to pay you for your services rendered this evening. Would a check be all right? I think I'm short of cash.
Eve: You always did go for the jugular and especially when you were hurt.
Julian: You cannot hurt me, Eve. Not anymore.
Eve: I'm sorry that I ever did hurt you. I never meant to. I loved you, Julian, not your wallet. And I never used you as a meal ticket back in Boston any more than I used you as a distraction from my hum-drum middle-class life with T.C. and the girls. I wanted to be with you just like I thought you wanted to be with me.
Julian: You say that now, but if you wanted to be with me, why did you choose T.C. over me, over us?
Eve: You know why, because he had a stroke. He almost died, and you were so good about it when it first happened. It just made everything that you did afterwards just inexplicable to me.
Julian: That you couldn't see the problem is inexplicable to me. When you love someone, you put them first, above all else, consciously, subconsciously. As it turns out, I was never first with you. I was, at best, what, fourth behind T.C. and the girls and your patients?
Eve: No, Julian. That's not true.
Julian: It is my truth.
Eve: But T.C. -- he was all alone.
Julian: Will you just stop lying to me, Eve? Stop lying to yourself and just admit that you really want to be back with T.C.
Paloma: I mean calm down. I know how you feel about Luis, and I know he cares about you.
Fancy: But Luis is still in love with my Aunt Sheridan. I shouldn't have to compete with that. I'm not going to.
Paloma: Forget you versus Sheridan for a minute and look at the big picture. Luis being slow to give up on Sheridan is a good thing.
Paloma: Because it shows that he's not an easy-come, easy-go kind of guy. And you want a man whose love can last forever.
Paloma: Yeah, and Sheridan said that she was going to let him go.
Paloma: It might take time, but you and my brother could end up sharing a wonderful life together.
Luis: Please, Sheridan, we don't have to go back. You know, like I said, we can start over.
Sheridan: We can't, Luis. We can't pretend that Marty never existed. Our son, he died a horrible death. And my baby with Chris died, too.
Luis: I understand that you blame me for what happened.
Sheridan: It's not blame so much as just a realization that things are truly different now. I don't know when that turning point was, and I'll probably never know. But we can't go back. We can't start over. Things are over for us, Luis, for good.
Luis: No, they're not, Sheridan. They're not over, ok. I refuse to accept --
Luis: Oh, my God. Things really are over, aren't they? It's really different this time. You don't want to be with me anymore. You want to be with Chris and James.
Sheridan: I really mean it this time. It's over. I've moved on, and you need to move on, too.
Valerie: I'm sorry, I don't really have time for this.
Jared: Of course. You don't want to keep your co-worker waiting.
Valerie: Oh, my God. You know.
Jared: Valerie, everyone knows that Dr. Russell walked in on you and Mr. Crane completing a merger on his desk.
Valerie: Oh, that.
Jared: "Oh, that." What did you think I was talking about?
Valerie: I wasn't sure.
Jared: I get it. So you're taking care of business with more than one co-worker.
Valerie: I didn't say that.
Jared: I knew you were an ice princess, but I had no idea you thawed out so easily.
Valerie: Look, Jared, I don't answer to you about work or my personal life, so if you'll excuse me.
Jared: You know, I was talking to a friend of mine today about a secret he's having trouble keeping.
Valerie: Your point?
Jared: Well, my point is, Valerie, you have to be careful, very careful. Because some secrets, like the one my friend is keeping, could hurt a lot of people if it came out. Now, you can relate to that, can't you, Valerie?
Eve: Julian, you might think that this situation is due to my past with T.C., but it's not. This is because you don't trust me or my love for you.
Julian: You're right, I don't. You know why? Because I have watched you pull away from me and draw closer to T.C. I saw that you didn't love me enough to put me first in your heart.
Eve: How can you say that?
Julian: If you loved me enough, we would still be together.
Eve: God, I can't believe my ears.
Julian: What was it that made you realize that you couldn't be with me? What was it? Were you afraid of the stares that interracial couples get, even now, in this day and age?
Eve: If I didn't care decades ago, Julian, why would it bother me now?
Julian: Well, then, it's as I said. You didn't love me enough. You never loved me enough.
Fancy: I can honestly see us making a go of it, but Luis' head isn't where mine is yet.
Paloma: Well, my brother is definitely worth waiting for, right?
Fancy: Right. Yeah, Luis is wonderful, so I will be patient and wait till he's ready to move on.
Fancy: I just wish I knew how long I'll have to wait for the real thing.
Paloma: The real thing?
Fancy: Yeah. Luis and I had a couple of false starts, which confused things, at least for me. But you and your mom talked to Luis, and I talked to Aunt Sheridan, so I wonder how much longer it'll be before your brother and my aunt finally end things.
Luis: It just doesn't seem possible that this is it for us.
Sheridan: It has to be.
Luis: I just never thought it would end like this. I always thought one of us would die or the world would come to an end. Not like this, it just seems so nice and -- I don't know -- neat.
Sheridan: I think it's best that way, don't you think?
Luis: Well, sure beats yelling and screaming. I don't know. Losing you, it's just --
Sheridan: Sometimes things are better left unsaid.
Sheridan: It's Chris. I left, I didn't tell him where I was going. Hello.
Chris: Hey. Where did you disappear to?
Sheridan: I didn't disappear, I had to run an errand.
Chris: Oh. Can you come home as soon as possible?
Sheridan: Why? What's going on? Is James all right?
Chris: Well, I suppose that depends on you.
Sheridan: I don't understand.
Chris: You will as soon as you get home.
Sheridan: All right, I'm on my way.
Sheridan: I have to go.
Sheridan: Luis, I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry.
Luis: Sheridan, wait.
Chad: Whitney called a few times. She didn't leave a message, so it must not be important.
Chad: Instead of waiting around here, I should jump in the shower. I have a bed to share with Whitney at home. God knows I love her. It's just not enough.
Whitney: Ever since we've gotten back from Rome, Chad's just a different person.
Theresa: Ok, different how?
Whitney: I don't know, he's just different. Like, the other day, I was going into Ethan's office, and Chad and Ethan were talking, and Chad was just really uneasy around me. And tonight, just now, he was so distant, you know, and preoccupied with something -- or maybe it's someone.
Theresa: Ok, hold on, maybe he feels caught in the middle of this whole thing going on with Ethan and Jared.
Whitney: No, Theresa, that's not what it is. I'm telling you, my instincts are telling me that something is wrong with Chad. He's seeing somebody else.
Theresa: I think you're totally off base here. Let's just say that he is seeing somebody else. Who could it be?
Jared: All right, you got it.
Valerie: Jared, I really need to go, but I'll keep what you said in mind.
Jared: Well, it looks like neither one of us are going anywhere. That was Hong Kong and it seems that the documents that you sent over to our office in Asia were second drafts and not the final version.
Valerie: Oh, I must have been distracted when Dr. Russell --
Jared: Of course you were. Anyway, Hong Kong caught the mistake, but we still need to get the final versions over to our office at Crane Asia so that they have something to work with.
Valerie: Damn it.
Jared: Yeah, it shouldn't take too long.
Valerie: I know, it's just frustrating.
Jared: Especially when you're keeping someone waiting.
Valerie: What if I am?
Jared: Look, Valerie. About you getting mixed up with someone at work --
Valerie: Look, I know I might be making a mistake, but I can't seem to stop.
Jared: Well, just remember there are other people involved. You have to be really careful with this.
Valerie: I know what's at stake, Jared, and I will be careful.
Eve: Telling me that I didn't love you enough -- on what scale of 1-10, Julian? Or were you using letter grades?
Julian: Well, neither, Eve. You see, it was your actions. The choice has made it perfectly clear that I just didn't mean to you what you meant to me.
Eve: So, then, we're back to my not deserting T.C. after his stroke.
Julian: You put him ahead of me countless times.
Eve: You know, that you can even give a voice to thinking this way shows me that you never considered my feelings.
Julian: I put you on a pedestal.
Eve: Yes, like you put Valerie on your desk and had your way with her.
Julian: You drove me to Valerie.
Eve: Drove you?
Julian: Yes. You weren't here, you had to be with T.C. I had needs that had to be fulfilled.
Eve: You did not sleep with Valerie to fulfill any needs, Julian. You had sex with her to hurt me because I had hurt you by being devoted to T.C.
Julian: If you knew you were hurting me, why did you keep putting T.C. first?
Eve: Because it was never a competition. Because I could love you, and I could take care of T.C.
Julian: You say you love me, but why do you always have to put someone or something ahead of me, ahead of us? "Julian, I love you, but I have to take care of T.C." "Julian, I love you, but my patients need me." "Julian, Julian!"
Eve: Yes! everything you said is true. Yes, it's all true. I do love you, and I do have responsibilities and patients who need me. I just don't understand why that is so hard to understand.
Julian: Understand? What I don't understand is that you always seem to put something or someone ahead of your love for me.
Eve: So, then, it's just -- it's all or nothing.
Julian: You tell me.
Eve: Well, I guess given that choice, you don't want to be with me.
Julian: I guess. So that's it, then. We're finished. Our relationship is over.
Sheridan: This doesn't change anything. We're finished as a couple. We have to be. I have to go home to my husband and his son. I wish you the best, Luis, always.
Luis: Yeah, always?
Sheridan: Paloma, Fancy, wow. I didn't expect --
Fancy: Paloma and I were working out at police headquarters.
Paloma: Yeah, and we came back to study our manuals.
Fancy: Why are you here?
Sheridan: I came to do what needed to be done. I let Luis go. He's free.
Sheridan: Luis is free, but he's in a world of pain because of me. He needs someone with him. He needs you, Fancy. You'll be here for him, won't you?
Luis: Sheridan! Sher --
Eve: So, if that's what you want, Julian, if you want our relationship to be over, then fine. Then it's over.
Julian: You agree with me?
Eve: Oh, that's always been kind of the bottom line of our relationship, hasn't it -- that I agree with you. That's ok. If that's what you need, yes, I agree with you because it's obviously proven futile not to.
Eve: Not that it makes any difference to you now, but I want you to know that I loved you. And my love was deep, and it was abiding, and it was heartfelt. You really were the light of my life.
Eve: Julian, yes, really. The way you're looking at me right now just makes it hard to believe that you ever felt anything for me at all.
Luis: What are you two doing here?
Paloma: We finished our workouts at the station, and we came here to study our training manual.
Fancy's voice: Poor Luis, he's hurting because I insisted Aunt Sheridan end things with him once and for all.
Paloma: How's Mama?
Luis: She's fine, I guess. She's at church.
Paloma: Luis, you look tired. Maybe you should go to sleep.
Luis: I'm fine. In fact, I have never felt better.
Paloma: Look, Luis is not going to open up to me about Sheridan. You know, he thinks he has to keep up his strong, big brother image, so I'm gonna go.
Fancy: What? No, Paloma. You can't leave me here alone with Luis.
Paloma: Well, you don't have to stay if you don't want to, but I think you should. Like Sheridan said, you have to be here for him.
Fancy: This is all my fault. I pushed Aunt Sheridan into cutting things off with Luis. He's hurting because of me.
Paloma: No. You did the right thing. He will work through what happened. Just make sure you're here for him while he does, ok?
Fancy: That's the least I can do, considering I set all this in motion.
Paloma: Luis, I'm going to bring this in, so if you need anything, just let me know, ok?
Luis: Yeah, sure. I will.
Luis: Fancy, you don't have to stay here on my account, you know. You should go study your cadet manual with Paloma.
Fancy: I saw Aunt Sheridan just before she left. Is it really over between you two?
Luis: Yeah, yeah, it's really over.
Fancy: I'm sorry, Luis. I know this is hard for you and Aunt Sheridan both.
Luis: Yeah, it's -- it's hell. Pure hell.
Sheridan: It had to be done, for all our sakes. I just wish it didn't hurt so much.
Chris: Hi. I thought I heard you come in.
Sheridan: Chris, you were so cryptic on the phone before. What's going on?
Chris: It's about our future together, Sheridan, our future as a family. What happened tonight changes everything.
Whitney: It's Valerie. Oh, my God, Chad is having an affair with Valerie.
Theresa: Valerie? Really, Whitney?
Whitney: Yes, Chad slept with her before when Chad and I stopped seeing each other.
Theresa: Right, but that was a long time ago, and like you said, you guys weren't even together. Honey, I still don't understand why you think that Chad is actually cheating on you.
Whitney: Look, all I know is that he's acting strange. You know, like he's guilty of something. Of course he denies it, but I know I'm not just imagining this. My gut is telling me that something is really wrong.
Theresa: Well, I'm not one to dismiss gut feelings, Whitney, because I go with mine all the time.
Whitney: Exactly. Like, what about tonight? I mean, where is Chad right now? Where did he go?
Theresa: Look, Jared is at the office, so why don't I call him and have him look around and see if he sees Chad? What do you think?
Whitney: Ok, that's fine, but don't let Jared know that I'm suspicious of Chad or anything like that.
Theresa: Not a problem.
Jared: Jared Casey.
Theresa: Oh, hi, it's me.
Jared: Hi, Tess, how you feeling?
Theresa: So much better. The whole fever thing is over. So, how are things there?
Jared: Good. I should be getting back to you soon.
Theresa: Oh, that's great. Listen, before you come back here, I have a little question for you. Can you look around and see if you can find Chad there by chance?
Jared: Sure. Is anything wrong?
Theresa: No, no, nothing's wrong, not at all. Just Whitney and I have a little question for him. So if you find him, can you just have him call me or Whitney, please?
Jared: Sure, Theresa. I'll see you soon.
Valerie: Ok, so I e-mailed the revised documents to all Crane offices in Asia. If there's nothing else you need me to do, I really need to get going.
Jared: That was Theresa calling. They're looking for Chad, so if you happen to bump into him before I do, tell him to check in with Theresa or Whitney.
Valerie: Sure. No problem.
Sheridan: Chris, please, cut to the chase. What's happened tonight that changes everything?
Sheridan: Oh, wow! I am surprised and confused. What's going on?
Chris: Well, actually we're celebrating.
Sheridan: We are?
Chris: Yeah. While you were out, the papers that I had drawn up for you to officially adopt James came by messenger.
Sheridan: Oh, my.
Chris: And after you sign those papers, you'll officially be James' mother.
Sheridan: Oh, Chris, what's happened tonight really will change everything.
James: There's two pages, see?
Luis: Yeah, it's over. It's finally over. I saw it in Sheridan's eyes. We don't have a future together.
Fancy: I'm sorry, Luis. Sorry for you and Aunt Sheridan both.
Julian: I loved you more than you could possibly know. That's why when I lost you years ago, I was so hurt and angry, I drank myself into oblivion. I treated my wife and children so horribly, I used women. I took pleasure out of other people's...pain. And when I got you back, it was a dream come true. But I never really got you back, did I? You were using me and my love for you. Your heart stayed with T.C.
Eve: No, Julian, that's not --
Julian: I really do not want to hear this. I now see you for the shameless opportunist you really are.
Eve: How dare you, Julian.
Julian: Shut up. Shut up and go back to your boring bourgeois life. When that life is over, you can go straight to hell.
Fancy: Can I get you anything, do anything for you?
Luis: Well, nothing will change the fact that Sheridan and I are over. We're finished forever.
Sheridan: Chris, you have no idea what it means to me to be adopting James, and the papers couldn't have come at a better time.
Chris: Why's that?
James: You're gonna be my mommy.
Chris' voice: Even if I'm not really James' father.
Sheridan: Yes I am, sweetheart. As soon as I sign those papers your daddy has for me, we are gonna be a family forever.
Chris: So that nobody can tear us apart.
Sheridan: Thank you, Chris. I know as long as the three of us are together, we'll always be happy.
Chris: Well, James and I will certainly do our part. Won't we, son?
Sheridan: From now on, you two are the most important men in my life, bar none.
Theresa: Chad and Valerie, huh? You know, I think your imagination's working overtime, all right? I don't see Chad ever being untrue to you.
Whitney: Really? Because Chad was married to Latoya and didn't tell me about it.
Theresa: I know, but he thought that they were divorced, Whitney.
Whitney: Yeah, but that doesn't matter. Look, Chad wasn't honest with me about his past before, and my gut is telling me that he's not honest with me now. God -- Chad's having an affair.
Chad: Hey. I'm glad you finally made it. Look, I'll be right out.
Chad: Can you make me a drink, too?
Chad: I didn't think you were ever gonna make it.
Chad: Mm, you smell good. Come here. Give me some.
On the Next Passions:
Julian: You can't let anyone or anything stand in your way, especially not Miguel.
Theresa: I'll tell Ethan the truth, that little Ethan is his.
