Ivy: What is it?
Sam: I'm sorry, too.
Ivy: What for?
Sam: You're not the only one who made a colossal mistake. I brought you into my home and into my bed far too soon after Grace left to be with David.
Ivy: You think that was a mistake?
Sam: It was selfish and short-sighted of me. By hooking up with you romantically, I've cheated my children out of the attention that they so desperately needed and deserved.
Ivy: Don't blame yourself, Sam.
Sam: I do, even more than I blame you. I mean, what was Jessica supposed to do after Grace left? She's the youngest. She and Grace were so close. Of course she's going to act out on her feelings of abandonment, but was I there to help her through them? Talk to her? Get her counseling? No. I was too busy reliving my youth with you.
Ivy: Not all that was between us, Sam.
Sam: Maybe. Maybe not. Everything just happened so fast, I'll never know.
Ivy: Sam, I --
Sam: If I'd only been wise enough to take it slow, maybe we could've worked out.
Ivy: Sam -- no! Please, it could still work out if you'd just let it.
Mrs. Wallace: Come on, come on. Bethie, would you turn your phone on, unless you want to end up sleeping with your own father!
Alistair: Good girl, Beth. She instinctively knows that a good defense is a strong offense.
Beth: I just -- I couldn't believe it when I saw that knife in her hand.
Sheridan: My hand? You were the one with the knife in your hand!
Beth: She actually sounds like she believes what she's saying. She -- she would've killed me if you hadn't gotten here in time, Luis.
Sheridan: She's lying! She's trying to turn this whole thing around so that she looks like the victim.
Beth: Yeah, because I am the victim when it comes to you, Sheridan. I know you want my son, but to try to kill me so you can take him? You should be locked up so you're not a threat to anyone.
Sheridan: What? You would've stabbed me if I hadn't knocked that knife out of your hand!
Beth: Oh, come on! I never saw that knife until you came at me with it!
Sheridan: I don't believe this. She is lying through her teeth and it's all because I figured her out. It's because I know that she is the one who kidnapped me and locked me in her basement, Luis.
Beth: You know what? I came here to have a quiet drink, to try and put all of this out of my mind, and guess who I run into -- this mad woman hell-bent on trying to kill me!
Luis: Beth -- calm down.
Beth: No, that's the last thing I am going to do! You know, I have given the benefit of the doubt to you two over and over. Well, I'm done. I am not going to roll over for this psycho woman ever again. I mean it, Luis.
Rebecca: Did you hear what your ex, that floozy, just said? I mean, here Gwen is bending over backwards for peace, and Theresa won't even listen.
Ethan: She'll listen. If you don't accept Gwen's offer, you're going to be making the biggest mistake of your life.
Theresa: And how is that?
Ethan: Just as I said, I will seek custody of Jane.
Theresa: No, you won't. I know you too well. It is not in you to be that cruel.
Ethan: You know, it's funny after all this time how we can still underestimate each other. You see, I -- I didn't know how cruel and heartless you could be, either. But I guess if you can do it, I can do it, too.
Rebecca: You go, Ethan.
Ethan: Listen to me -- you know what the sad part about this is, is I only ever saw the good qualities in you. I never saw this side of you. I only saw how -- how loyal you were and how brave you were and how loving you were.
Theresa: Which is why I'm such a good mother to both of my children.
Ethan: Yes, oh, I know you're capable of that, but after seeing this side of you, I just don't think I want my daughter raised by someone like you at all.
Theresa: Now, that's not fair, Ethan. I have been backed into a corner.
Ethan: If you feel like you're in a corner, then you have put yourself in that corner. Gwen has been generous enough to offer you a way out of this, but your resistance to this can only be seen as self-serving and vindictive. Huh -- two qualities I don't really want in my baby's mother.
Theresa: Now, why don't you just please stop, Ethan.
Ethan: I, on the other hand, will make sure that Jane is my first priority, number one. Make sure that she is safe and protected and happy all the time.
Theresa: Well, I would do that, too, Ethan.
Ethan: You can't do that! You won't have the time to do that because you'll be too busy pressing charges against my wife. You won't have time for little Ethan or Jane. Here's the fact, Theresa -- the D.A. does not have a case against Gwen without you. It's all up to you. So here are your choices. You can either choose to fight Gwen tooth and nail your whole life, or you can choose to be a mother to your son and to our daughter.
Theresa: I'll drop the charges against Gwen, on one condition.
Ethan: What is that?
Theresa: You let Ethan go, Gwen. You divorce him so that he can be with me -- the woman he really loves. Would free up more personal time?
Chad: You know, I am sick and tired of everybody telling me what I can and can't do with Whitney.
Julian: Chad, she --
Chad: She's my half sister -- yes, like I don't realize that, like I don't think about life's little nasty joke every minute of the day. But, you know, this isn't about anybody else but that little baby. And as his legal father, I want to give him the best shot he can possibly have. Now, I feel I can be a damn good single father, but it'd be even better if he had his mother, too. So I don't see why we can't be a nontraditional family and raise our son together.
Whitney: Please, Fox. I really don't want to talk right now, ok?
Fox: Whitney, I don't care, all right? Because you owe me -- you owe me an explanation.
Whitney: An explanation.
Fox: Yeah! Yeah, about our son that you threw away without telling me about it?
Whitney: Look, please. Look, I've already tried to tell you I don't feel comfortable raising a child by myself.
Fox: "Raising a child" -- Whitney, I proposed to you! I got down on my knee! I proposed to you because there's nothing I ever wanted more than to be with you and to raise our child! Now, you tell me -- I want to know. When did you fall out of love with me? When did that happen, huh?
Whitney: I don't know what more you want me to say.
Fox: My -- I want the truth, Whitney! Just tell me the truth, all right, because no matter how you feel about me, I can't -- I'm -- I'm still in love with you. It's not easy for me, all right? I want the truth! Now, just tell me. Tell me what happened. You can tell me anything. I want to help you -- just tell me.
Gwen: You want me to divorce Ethan so you can be with him.
Rebecca: I told you she is pathologically selfish.
Theresa: You heard me, Gwen.
Rebecca: You know, for once in my life, I am at a loss for words.
Gwen: Oh, honey, I would love to hear what you have to say about this one.
Theresa: Yeah. What do you have to say?
Ethan: Theresa is living in a fantasy world, ok? I've made my choice. It's been very clear -- I want to stay married to you. I wouldn't let you divorce me if you wanted to. I would fight you all the way on that.
Gwen: Well, gee, Theresa, then I guess the answer is no. I am not going to divorce my husband.
Theresa: I think you should give that a little bit more thought, Gwen, because if you don't divorce Ethan, then you're going to spend the rest of your life in jail, so being married to him -- that's not going to mean a whole hell of a lot.
Sheridan: I swear, Beth pulled that knife on me. If you hadn't gotten to us in time, she would've killed me!
Beth: What? You're crazy, certifiably crazy. Luis, come on! She spent time in a psych ward. She sees clowns. You're really going to believe her over me?
Luis: All right. Now, put yourself in my position, ok?
Sheridan: Look, Luis, how many times do I have to tell you? Marty is my son!
Beth: You see? She can't even try to be rational -- why? Because she's completely out of her mind! I -- oh, oh, what about that gas leak at my house?
Luis: Yeah, I remember that gas leak. Sheridan almost died because of it.
Beth: She tried to kill herself. If that's not proof of mental instability, I don't know what it is.
Sheridan: That's not true. I know now -- I bet you caused that gas leak.
Sheridan: You wanted me dead even then!
Beth: Paranoid, too.
Sheridan: No. No, it's true -- you wanted to kill me so that you could have Marty all to yourself and then get back with Luis.
Beth: Oh, god! Right, right! Sheridan's totally right! I'm guilty. Come on, Luis -- arrest me for attempted murder of Sheridan. Come on, Luis.
Luis: No, I can't.
Beth: You're a police officer, do it!
Luis: No -- Beth? I cannot do that.
Sheridan: Why not? Oh, my god. You don't believe me. You think she's telling the truth and I'm lying.
Sam: Ivy --
Ivy: No, please -- shh. Don't. Don't say anything. There is nothing wrong with you finding comfort in my arms -- not after Grace left and not now. I can still offer you that at least.
Sam: No. Look, Ivy, I -- I misled you once and I'm not going to do it again. As hard as it's going to be for both of us, I think we need to take the time we should've taken before.
Ivy: Fine. Fine, go ahead -- take all the time you need. I'll still be here waiting for you.
Sam: No. I don't want you to do that.
Ivy: Yeah --
Sam: Grace and I were married for over 20 years. We had a life together, created a family. I can't ask you to put your own life on hold while I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with mine.
Ivy: But if I don't mind --
Sam: Ivy, you are still young and beautiful. You deserve to be happy with someone who's going to make you his first priority.
Ivy: I don't -- I don't think I can be happy without you, Sam.
Sam: Ivy, you're going to have to try. I need to make a clean break and so do you.
Mrs. Wallace: Oh. Yoo-hoo. Hey, yoo-hoo!
Bartender: Yeah, what'll it be, lady?
Mrs. Wallace: Davey? Davey, is that you?
Bartender: I'm sorry. I don't believe we've --
Mrs. Wallace: Tsk, tsk.
Davey: Edna? Easy Edna?
Mrs. Wallace: Shh. Don't spread that around, honey. Leave that to me.
Davey: Hey, you look just the same, baby.
Mrs. Wallace: Oh.
Davey: Except maybe for the walker.
Mrs. Wallace: Well, I'm no spring chicken, honey, but it beats the alternative, right?
Davey: You got that right. Here. Let me buy you one on the house, huh?
Mrs. Wallace: Oh.
Davey: For old times' sake.
Mrs. Wallace: Oh, thank you. Aren't you a doll, huh? Ooh, listen -- Davey, have there been any young women in this place tonight?
Davey: Not tonight, not in a blue moon. Who are you looking for?
Mrs. Wallace: Oh, my daughter and her date. She's got this dark hair, short and it sticks out.
Davey: Nobody under 60's been in here, date or no date.
Mrs. Wallace: Oh. Well, I'm not surprised. Alistair Crane wouldn't get caught dead in a place like this.
Davey: I'm sorry, I didn't hear you. My hearing's not what it used to be.
Mrs. Wallace: Ha! You and me both, honey. Look, the guy that's with my daughter -- he likes live music, ok? Do you know any place or club in town that has live performers?
Davey: You might try that jazz club over on Maple -- the Blue Note.
Mrs. Wallace: Blue Note -- oh, yeah. Ok, good. Thanks, honey. Hey, give me a call sometime, would you? I'm in the book.
Davey: You bet, Edna.
Mrs. Wallace: Ok. Bye-bye. Oh, I've got to stop my daughter before she makes the biggest mistake of her life!
Sheridan: It's true, isn't it? You believe Beth's story over mine. You -- you think that I went after her with a knife?
Luis: I didn't say that.
Sheridan: You don't have to. It's obvious that you trust Beth more than you trust me.
Alistair: That girl's as smart as she is sexy. I'm liking her more and more. Yeah.
Sheridan: I don't believe this. I mean, I -- I really -- I really do feel like I'm losing my mind now, because the man that I trust with my life is taking the word of an attempted murderer over mine.
Luis: Sheridan, listen to me. I want to believe you, ok? I really do. It's just that the D.N.A. Test proved that --
Sheridan: No, those D.N.A. tests are wrong! Ok? How many times do I have to tell you? Somehow or someway -- I don't know how. Maybe Beth fudged them somehow!
Beth: What? How could I do that, Sheridan? I don't have the money or the influence to pull off something like that. I'm not a Crane like you.
Sheridan: Oh, my god. That's it. My father. I figured it out. My father's the one who's helped you with all this. That's who my father was on a date with earlier -- Beth!
Beth: Oh, god. Give me a break. Ok, you're really grasping at straws now, Sheridan.
Sheridan: No, no. That's what -- that's what happened. You were here celebrating with my father the fact that you still have Marty. That's it, where is he?
Beth: I don't know!
Sheridan: Oh, no. No, he was sitting right over there. I know it now. You two were plotting together.
Beth: Wow. Luis, do you see what I'm -- I'm saying now? I was not talking to Alistair, ok? I don't have Sheridan's baby. And I have never dressed up in a clown outfit -- although, I do feel like a fool for tolerating miss looney-tunes until now. I mean, the nicer I am to you, the crazier you get. I'm done, Luis. Done!
Luis: Now, come on, honey, let's go.
Sheridan: No, no. I want my son back. Oh, I am not finished with you yet.
Luis: Sheridan -- I'm really sorry. Ok, look -- don't hold this against her, ok? I'm going to make sure that she gets the help that she needs, ok?
Beth: You'd better.
Sheridan: No! I don't want to go home!
Rebecca: You heard her. Theresa wants Gwen to spend the rest of her life in jail.
Ethan: I would never have believed that you could be this vengeful.
Theresa: It's not about that.
Rebecca: Oh, please! Oh, that is such bull. Look, she is hoping that once Gwen is in jail, you will become so lonely that you will turn to her. That's all she's ever wanted. And that's because she's just that kind of a gal.
Ethan: Is it true? Is that your plan? You want to put Gwen behind bars so you can get me back? Is that it?
Chad: Look, no hard feelings, ok? I know you guys think you give me advice I need. But I'm not in the market for it. Now, thank you for helping me with the baby. Good night.
Eve: All right, if that's the way you feel about it.
Julian: If you -- if you need any help with anything, anything at all, just --
Chad: Yeah, will do. Shh, shh.
Chad: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. It's ok. It's ok. They're gone. Hey.
Fox: Whitney, I'm going to stand out here all night until I get an explanation.
Whitney: Fox, I've told you everything I can. Please accept it.
Fox: You didn't tell me everything you could.
Ethan: Is that why you wanted to press charges against Gwen? So you can lock her up in prison and have me to yourself? Are you kidding me?
Theresa: It's not as simple as that.
Rebecca: See? She's not even denying it.
Ethan: Listen to me. If there's any truth in what Rebecca is saying right now, you can forget it. Forget about it, ok? I'm not leaving her. Not for you, not for anyone. I happen to love her.
Theresa: Then why did you kiss me?
Ethan: You kissed me. I was a little too surprised to pull away, Theresa.
Theresa: You know what, Gwen? If you believe that, then you're dumber than I thought. Ethan loves me, no matter what he says. And you know what? He's always dreamed of fathering his own children and raising his own family, so why would he choose to stay with you when he can be with me, the mother of his child?
Mrs. Wallace: Excuse me. Hi, cutie. Ooh -- thank you. I'm looking for Alistair Crane.
Bartender: Oh. Well, you just missed him. He left a few minutes ago.
Mrs. Wallace: Tell me he was alone, huh?
Bartender: Are you kidding? That man's always got some sort of arm candy by his side. Tonight's no different.
Mrs. Wallace: Oh, no. God -- tell me what the girl he was with looked like.
Bartender: Um -- kind of cute. Different from his usual type. She was young. She had short black hair.
Mrs. Wallace: Oh, angels of mercy. Ok, were they drinking?
Bartender: Yeah, they went through two bottles of my best champagne.
Mrs. Wallace: Oh! Ok. Thanks, son.
Mrs. Wallace: Hmm, hmm. Lordy, lordy, Beth is going to be sleeping with her own father. I got to stop her. Oh. Ah! Ok. Ooh.
Beth: Alistair, stop. The room is spinning.
Alistair: You haven't seen anything yet.
Beth: I can't believe I'm in Alistair Crane's bedroom.
Alistair: Why not? I've admired you for years, Beth. And I've never been as turned on as I am tonight. Huh? I like a woman who reminds me so much of myself.
Ethan: Do not speak to my wife that way.
Gwen: Honey, it's all right. I can defend myself. You know, Theresa, you can call me whatever you want. But the truth is, I am the one with Ethan. And you heard what he said. He wouldn't divorce me even if I asked for one.
Theresa: He's being noble, Gwen, yet again. Always saying what you want to hear. But the truth is he doesn't want to be married to you, he wants to be with me.
Ethan: All right, all right. Where are you getting this? Don't you back me in a corner like this. I told you what I would do.
Theresa: You're not going to take Jane away from me. You're bluffing.
Ethan: Are you sure? You want to test me on this? I'll give you one more chance. Drop the charges.
Theresa: Only if you grant her a divorce.
Ethan: That is not even on the table, Theresa.
Theresa: Then I guess we'll see how warm your nobility keeps you at night, huh, while Gwen's doing time in jail for the next 30 to 40 years.
Sam: Ivy -- where are you going?
Ivy: I'm not sure. I'm not sure.
Sam: Well, there's no reason you can't stay another night -- pack your things and leave tomorrow.
Ivy: No. I don't think I could spend the night in that house with you. I think that would be a little too painful. Um -- I think it's best we do it your way. A clean break.
Sam: But where are you going to stay?
Ivy: I'm nothing if not resilient, Sam. Remember that? I'll be fine.
Julian: You know, Chad's right. We -- we've been treating him like a child.
Eve: He's acting like a child if he thinks he can still have a relationship with Whitney.
Julian: It's not so easy to stop loving someone.
Eve: They do, don't they? I mean, love each other.
Julian: I'm afraid so, god help them.
Julian: My other son.
Eve: Fox -- what happened to your hand?
Fox: Nothing, my hand is fine, thank you.
Julian: Well, it doesn't look fine.
Fox: No, it's fine. You know what? Don't start acting like you give a damn, huh? You want to do something? Why don't you go visit Chad, the bastard who stole my son away from me.
Eve: Fox, your father cares about you. Now, let me see --
Fox: He cares about me? He cares about me? You want to help me? Help me understand why Whitney turned her back on me and gave my son away.
Chad: That's right. You and me need to get some rest if we're going to be hanging together. You know, we got a lot to look forward to. Like, you know, seeing if the Sox can do it again this year. What's that? Oh, come on, now. Don't sell them short. They can do it again. Huh? Hmm.
Whitney: Oh. My baby. My son.
Luis: Just try and get some sleep, all right? And we'll talk in the morning.
Sheridan: No, Luis, there is nothing else for us to talk about, ok? You believe Beth more than you believe me -- the woman that you supposedly love and want to spend the rest of your life with.
Luis: Come on, that's not fair, ok?
Sheridan: No, you know what's fair is two people in love that trust each other more than anyone else in the world. I told you that Beth tried to kill me tonight, and you sided with her.
Luis: Yeah, well, it's -- it's not that simple, Sheridan. You know, I don't even know what to believe about anything anymore.
Sheridan: That's exactly my point. And the fact that it's even an issue -- that just tells me that we have a really big problem.
Luis: Sheridan, please, sweetheart, would you --
Sheridan: No, Luis, don't condescend to me, ok? You think I'm crazy? So what? I don't care. I can't sleep.
Luis: Sheridan --
[Door opens and closes]
Mrs. Wallace: Boy, I hope Alistair and Beth are here, because I have checked everywhere else. And as evil as they are, even they wouldn't want to do the deed if they knew they were father and daughter. Huh. Or would they?
[Mrs. Wallace gasps]
Alistair: What's wrong, my pet?
Beth: Um -- I don't know. I just -- I can't help wondering if this is really a good idea.
Alistair: Of course it is. I like you, you like me. What's to stop us?
Beth: I don't know. Something just doesn't feel right.
Alistair: Are you thinking of Luis?
Beth: No, it's not him.
Alistair: What? My age? No, trust me, darling. Young men would die for my virility.
Beth: No, it's -- it's not your age, either.
Alistair: What is it? There's nothing standing in the way of us doing what we want to do.
Beth: Well, couldn't we just go a little slower, please?
Alistair: No. No, we can't!
Beth: Oh --
On the Next Passions:
Ethan: Because of you, the whole world found out that I was Sam Bennett's son.
Sheridan: If you can't be on my side, then get out!
Mrs. Wallace: Alistair and Beth cannot do the down-and-dirty! He's her father!
Alistair: Come to Papa.
