Natalie: I think I'm on your side of the bed.

John: Hey, you know something? I think you're right.

David: You canít keep me here forever, no matter what John Mc Bain says!

[Knock on door]

Dorian: Who is it?

Adriana: Itís me, mom.

Dorian: Oh. Hi, sweetheart. Come on in.

Adriana: Are you all right?

Dorian: Oh, I'm fine. Yeah. Yeah, I'm just -- I'm fine. I just didnít sleep very well last night, and I'm having a little trouble getting motivated this morning.

Adriana: Really? You, having trouble getting motivated? You're really upset, mom. Just admit it.

Evangeline: Well, I would much rather be at the gym than at the hospital this early in the morning.

Cristian: Yeah, I know, but this is going to be good for you. You know, this counselor is going to teach you how to deal with things now that --

Evangeline: Now that what? You can say the b word, Cris. I know I'm blind.

Antonio: No, i canít come over there right now. Look -- the night manager probably took the keys home with him accidentally. Look, wake him up, and do me a favor -- call him first next time. Hey. Hi, Evangeline.

Evangeline: Hey, Antonio.

Cristian: What are you doing here? Is everything all right?

Antonio: I donít know. We're supposed to get the results of the paternity test today.

Tess: This is it, Brennan. After today, things could change for us forever. What is it?

Nash: I'm leaving.

Antonio: I just want to know once and for all. I just hope I donít regret saying those words.

Evangeline: Well, knowing has to be better than this -- limbo.

Cristian: This whole thingís crazy. I mean, it wasnít too long ago you were fighting to keep Jamie -- now this?

Antonio: Yeah. And thereís a hell of a lot more at stake now. I mean, itís not just who -- who the father was. You know, I mean, once we -- we find that out, then we're going to find out who it was when Brennan was conceived.

Evangeline: Jessica might not be the mother.

Antonio: Yes, thatís a possibility, and if -- and if sheís not, she may never see her again.

Tess: You're leaving? We're finally getting the paternity test back, and -- all of a sudden, you have somewhere else better to be?

Nash: No. But I canít go with you.

Tess: Why? Why not?

Nash: This isnít going to be easy for you to hear, Tess.

Tess: Oh, my God. My God, whatís happening?

Nash: Tess, I'm going to -- I'm going to be honest with you.

Tess: Just say it, Nash.

Nash: Reston threatened you and Brennan.

Tess: Wait, he threatened us? How did he threaten us?

Nash: Heís going to kill you.

Tess: What? Him? Heís a crotchety old man.

Nash: Heís a crotchety old man who almost had me beat to death. Have you forgotten about that?

Tess: No.

Nash: Good.

Tess: I havenít, and I wonít forget about that, but now we know what we're up against.

Nash: What we're up against is a dangerous man whoís angry and dead serious. Look, if it was just you and me, I might chance it, but I canít. I canít put our babyís life at risk. You wouldnít want that, either.

Tess: Ok, ok. Then we'll just -- we'll call the cops.

Nash: No, no, we canít call the cops. The only way for me to protect you and Brennan is for me to give Reston what he wants.

Tess: And that is?

Nash: Tess, I got to leave town, and I canít come back.

Adriana: What happened, mom?

Dorian: Um -- nothing. Really. Nothing -- hey. This has been a horrific week for our entire family.

Adriana: Yeah, but you're usually at your best in a crisis. Itís something else.

Dorian: I -- I went to see David, in jail.

Adriana: You want to talk about it?

Dorian: Itís just seeing him there, locked up behind bars. He looked so vulnerable and helpless.

Adriana: Is it true? Did he kill Michael and Johnís father?

Dorian: It would explain a lot, and yet it explains nothing.

Adriana: Whatís going to happen to him?

Dorian: I donít know.

Adriana: He could confess.

Dorian: David? Plead guilty?

Adriana: If he did it, it would be the right thing.

Dorian: He asked me to help him get out of jail.

Adriana: Legally?

Dorian: Any way possible -- I mean, this is David that we're talking about. I told him that I would help him get a lawyer.

Adriana: That was very generous of you.

Dorian: I was in love with him once. I almost married him once. And he just looked so lost.

Adriana: You're right. That doesnít sound like David. The more lost he feels, the more cocky he acts.

Dorian: But, you see, itís this guilt that he has kept buried for so many years, and now itís taken over his life. Well, I'm not going to let it take over mine. I mean, really, I am doing everything that I possibly can already.

Adriana: Yeah. I mean, you canít break him out of jail.

Dorian: Well, that goes without saying.

Thomas: Freeze!  Donít do this, kid.

Natalie: John?

John: Hmm?

Natalie: You ok?

John: I'm fine.

Natalie: Was it a bad dream?

John: Something like that.

Natalie: Is this how itís going to be, John? Because, you know, we've been there once, and I wonít go back there.

John: When?

Natalie: We made love all night. We were getting close, and then you get out of bed, get dressed, and shut down.

John: Thatís not what this is.

Natalie: Really?

John: This is new for both of us.

Natalie: No, not really. We were lying in each otherís arms, and you have a nightmare.

John: What, we're going to start fighting about dreams now?

Natalie: No, no, honey, we're not fighting because, frankly, I wonít have this fight again. You had a bad dream, and then you -- you get up and you get out of bed and you're gone. Even when you're here, you're gone, and that scares me. Fine, you arenít going to say anything. Good.

John: I'm sorry.

Natalie: Do you know what for?

John: For shutting you out. I know you want this to be different than it was the last time. So do I.

Natalie: You know, Roxy says that tigers donít change their spots.

John: You know as well as I do tigers donít have spots.

Natalie: She just thinks that I should be careful with my heart.

John: And what do you think?

Natalie: I think that Roxy is wrong a lot.

Dorian: Well, what do you think?

Adriana: Itís -- itís beautiful. Is it new?

Dorian: Yes. Yes, it is, but you know, I'm not entirely sure that itís just right for what I have in mind today.

Adriana: You know, we were talking about David.

Dorian: Yes. And now I'm finished talking about David, ok? Because I'm not the sort of woman to dwell on things that, you know, I canít do anything about.

Adriana: You loved him, mom. I never saw you happier than when you two were together.

Dorian: Oh, really?

Adriana: You glowed. And, you know, when you're in love, everything just looks better, more perfect.

Dorian: Yes, but that comes from within you. It has nothing to do with the man. Sweetheart, I was happy before I met David, and I'm going to be happy again.

Adriana: I know. But it doesnít mean you're weak if you worry about him.

Dorian: Right, right. Look at the time. I have to get to work. I'm really late. But thank you.

Woman: Evangeline Williamson?

Evangeline: I donít see any other blind women in the room.

Woman: Neither do I. I'm blind, too.

Evangeline: Oh, I -- I'm sorry.

Woman: Forget it. I'm Anne. I'll be your counselor.

Evangeline: Evangeline Williamson -- officially your worst nightmare.

Anne: Hardly. And you are?

Cristian: I'm Cristian Vega. We're friends.

Anne: And the other man?

Cristian: Wait a minute. How'd you --

Anne: Trade secret. Evangeline will be doing it soon enough.

Antonio: I'm Antonio Vega. I'm Cristianís brother.

Anne: Hmm. If you gentlemen donít mind, we need to get started. Come with me.

Cristian: I'll wait for you in here.

Antonio: I think Evangeline is going to be fine.

Cristian: Yeah. Yeah, I know. Once she puts her mind to something, look out.

Antonio: Damn it. Nash and Tess are late. We're supposed to be in the genetics lab in a few minutes.

Tess: Well, we'll show Reston. We'll just -- we'll all go. I mean, we -- I hate it here. I feel like a prisoner. Itís -- we donít belong in a mansion with all these servants around. This is so not us. I mean, the Buchanans donít even want us here really, anyway.

Nash: Tess, you're not hearing me. I need to keep you safe.

Tess: I am safest with you. Please donít let them do this. Donít let them split us up. We're a family.

Nash: We always will be.

Tess: Then stand up and fight for us!

Nash: How? I canít run. I canít buy him off, I canít kill him. I canít go to the cops -- they canít protect us. What do you want me to do?

Tess: You canít leave me here alone. The Buchanans, everybody, the whole town -- they want Jessica back, and she is sitting and waiting and watching.

Nash: Tess?

Tess: If you leave, she'll come back.

Nash: No. You're stronger now. You can stop her from coming back.

Tess: What if I canít? I want to raise our baby. I want to watch her grow up with you.

Nash: You think I donít? So do I. But thatís not going to happen if we run.

Tess: We're not running, Nash. We're just -- we're taking our life back, back from Claudia and the Buchananís and her vigilante father and everybody else who is making bets on when Jessicaís coming back.

Nash: Look, if Brennanís ours --

Tess: She is ours.

Nash: I think so, too. But we got to find out for sure. I mean, if --

Tess: What if we're wrong? Hmm? Antonio is just waiting for his chance to snatch her back up from us, and Viki and Clint -- they're all waiting for that envelope to open and find out that they've won the Brennan sweepstakes, and I donít need a D.N.A. test to know that she is our kid. You say we need to be safe, ok? Well, letís just go. Letís run. Letís never look back.

Nash: Tess, thatís not how it works. I leave alone or you and the baby will die.

Tess: No. No. This is crazy talk. I mean, Reston is all talk. We have no reason to be afraid of him.

Nash: Reston was here in this room, or more likely one of his goons were here.

Tess: What, in -- in the nursery?

Nash: Yeah, in the nursery. I -- I found this in her crib -- in her crib. It was leaning up against her.

Natalie: So I have to go home and pack for Harrisburg. I told you, right, that uncle Bo arranged for me to shadow a forensics tech at the state crime lab?

John: About a hundred times. What I canít figure out is if you're excited about it.

Natalie: Yeah, very funny.

[Knock on door]

John: Oh, Dr. Lord. What a pleasant surprise.

Dorian: Detective. May I come in?

John: What can I do for you?

Dorian: I need some information.

John: Oh, is this information you couldnít have gotten down at the station?

Dorian: I want the truth, not some official story. How solid is your case against David?

John: I'm sorry -- why would I give you this information?

Dorian: Because David and I were very close, and I may be able to tell you something that would strengthen your case, some tidbit that maybe you havenít stumbled across yet.

John: Ah. Well, I can say itís an ongoing investigation.

Dorian: 25 years, huh? I'll say itís ongoing, but do you have any tangible evidence against him?

John: We have some credible leads. I'm sure there will be more.

Dorian: And you're willing to let him rot in jail for something that happened 25 years ago?

John: Are you suggesting I let him walk because heís gotten away with it for so long?

Dorian: What if he were to express remorse? Would that make a difference?

John: Letís cut to the chase, Dr. Lord. Did David tell you he killed my father?

Guard: Visitor.

David: Adriana. Hi.

Adriana: Hey.

David: Is everything all right at "Craze"?

Adriana: You're about to be charged with murder and you're worrying about if everythingís all right at "Craze"?

David: Well, what are you doing in a dump like this? I'm a loser, kid. Why even bother?

Adriana: Well, thatís what I came to ask you. Should I care about you, David? Are you worth it?

Evangeline: You're not really blind, are you?

Anne: Completely, since I was 15. Car accident.

Evangeline: Oh, thatís terrible.

Anne: It is what it is.

Evangeline: You made it all the way down the hall, onto the elevator, and into this room without hesitation.

Anne: I work here. I know my way around.

Evangeline: What, are you reading?

Anne: Braille. Havenít you ever seen a Helen Keller movie?

Evangeline: Yeah, I just never thought I would be in one.

Evangeline: What, are you typing?

Anne: What you donít know about being blind could fill a big, fat Braille book, couldnít it?

Evangeline: Yeah, well, I wasnít planning on losing my sight.

Anne: Well, now that you have, do you want to opt for a full, productive life, or are you planning to spend the rest of your life wallowing in self-pity?

Evangeline: This is not self-pity.

Anne: What is it, then?

Evangeline: Itís terror.

Tess: Some monster put his hand on our child?

Nash: It was just a warning. It was a threat. He wants us to know that we're being watched.

Tess: I'll kill him.

Nash: Yeah, thatís great. You kill him, and now Brennanís got to grow up without a mommy. We just got to play this thing out, Tess.

Tess: I canít do it alone.

Nash: Yes, you can. You can. You have to. You are stronger than you think. You just got t to take care of her until I get back.

Tess: I thought you werenít coming back.

Nash: I'm coming back. You really think I could just walk out on the two of you?

Tess: Why not? I'm damaged goods.

Nash: No, you're not. Donít say that. Donít you ever say that again. You are my wife. In every way that counts, you are my wife, and I'm going to protect you, but to protect you, I got to leave again, all right? We just got to work together on this. Come on -- stay.

Tess: What is the matter with Reston? You're not even with Claudia. You're never going to go back to her.

Nash: He -- he sees his daughter. Sheís still messed up, and he blames me for that.

Tess: Well, he should look in the mirror.

Nash: I can fix this. All right? I'm going to take care of the Restonís.

Tess: I canít -- I canít lose you. You're my life. You and this baby, you make me real.

Nash: No, no. You make you real. With your will and your heart, you've made you real.

Jessicaís voice: I can help you, Tess. I can take care of things.

Tess: No.

Jessicaís voice: Reston doesnít want me. If you and Nash are gone, Brennan will be safe. Let me take care of our little girl.

Nash: You just got to trust me, Tess. All right? I'm going to take care of the Restonís, and then I'll be back as soon as I can. You can do this, you're strong enough. You just got to take care of Brennan until I get back.

Tess: You have to go. Itís the only way.

David: Adriana, thereís something that you ought to know about me. People say that I'm egocentric and vainglorious, but I have bad qualities, too.

Adriana: Huh.

David: Underneath this seemingly perfect exterior, I'm just a con man.

Adriana: Because thatís the way you let people see you.

David: Adriana, that is me.

Adriana: No, itís not.

David: You see the good in everybody.

Adriana: You're my friend, and thereís plenty of good in you. I wouldnít be here otherwise.

David: You could almost convince me, but I know the truth.

Adriana: Did you shoot John and Michaelís father?

David: Your mother was here.

Adriana: Yeah, I know. Sheís pretty upset.

David: "Breaking dishes" upset or just "buying new shoes" upset?

Adriana: Well, sheís acting like she doesnít care what happens to you. But when sheís alone, itís like she canít think about anything else.

Dorian: David didnít confess anything to me.

John: You're not together anymore, so tell me again why you're protecting a murderer?

Dorian: I would have to see proof in order to believe that. We live in the United States of America. For the moment, the concept of innocent until proven guilty still stands.

John: Why are you here again?

Dorian: I need to know your plans for David.

John: The D.A.ís preparing to file formal charges, so when the grand jury convenes --

Dorian: Oh. In other words, you're holding him without cause.

John: I wouldnít say that. As soon as the Cochran mess is cleared up, the D.A. will be able to present his case.

Dorian: If David hadnít found Margaret Cochran, Todd would be dead. Doesnít that make a difference?

Natalie: No. John saved Toddís life, nobody else.

Antonio: Tess, itís Antonio. I'm at the hospital. Where are you? Damn it.

Cristian: No answer?

Antonio: No, and Nash isnít answering, either. I know thereís something going on.

Cristian: Look, maybe they're just having a rough time getting here. They have the baby, remember?

Antonio: Look, donít you think I know that? I mean, thatís what this whole thing is about. Cristian, they've run off before, and depending on what that test says, this could be their last chance. I mean, they may take the baby and disappear.

Cristian: I donít think they would do that, itís too risky.

Antonio: Yeah, well, I'm not wasting any more time. You call me if they show up.

Nash: Tess, you got to believe in me. You believed in me up to now. Donít stop believing in me.

Tess: You wonít be here.

Nash: Yes -- yes, I will. I'll be right there. I'll be right there in the baby. All right? You and I are both a part of her. I love you, and I will do anything to protect you. This is just the beginning of our life. Please say you still believe in me.

Tess: I never stopped, and I never will.

Nash: All right, I'll be back.

[Tess cries]

Nash: Donít, donít, donít. Hey, I'll be back. I will be back.

Tess: Ok.

Nash: All right?

Tess: Tell her -- tell her goodbye. Tell her exactly what you told me.

Nash: Daddy loves you. You take care of your mommy till I get back, ok? Sheís going to need you. Ok.

Nash: Tess?

Tess: Be safe.

Nash: You're going to be all right.

Tess: Please, just go.

Nash: I love you.

Jessicaís voice: Itís ok, Tess. You did the right thing.

Anne: You had five senses, and if you're like most people, you relied on your eyes for almost everything. I did. Itís a loss, but you can handle it. You have to learn to use the tools you were born with.

Evangeline: At the end of the day, I'm -- I'm so tired of listening to every little thing that I pass out like a stone. And then I start to dream, and I can see -- until I open my eyes.

Anne: I know.

Evangeline: Are your dreams like that after all these years?

Anne: They're beautiful. But they're dreams. Thatís no excuse for not living.

Evangeline: Yeah, well, not to diminish what happened to you, but you were a kid. You know, I'm an adult, I have to take care of myself. I'm a lawyer, and I have to read peopleís faces. What if I'm not good at that anymore? Not to mention I -- I have to take care of my sister and my friends --

Anne: Ok, get over that crap right now. You're blind. Itís a fact. But it doesnít change who you are, just how you do things.

Evangeline: How I do things is who I am.

Anne: Type a, arenít you?

Evangeline: How'd you guess?

Anne: You'll be fine. Drive me crazy trying to be perfect on the first day, but I'll deal. You're not the first, and who knows? Maybe you'll be a better lawyer when you learn how to listen.

Evangeline: Hey -- no lawyer jokes, please.

Anne: The man you came with --

Evangeline: Cristian?

Anne: Is he your boyfriend?

Evangeline: No. But we're -- um -- close.

Anne: Were you close before you lost your sight?

Evangeline: Yeah, but in a different way. Uh -- heís unexpected, the way he takes care of me, and -- I donít know, I guess I just never thought I would feel that way again, you know?

John: I believe you two know each other.

Natalie: Ah. You know the reason thereís no statute of limitations on murder? Itís because of the people who are left behind, because they never get over it. John and Michael grew up without a father because David did something stupid, and maybe he thought it was a mistake, but the Mc Bainís -- well, it changed their lives forever.

Dorian: Well put, but the damage has been done.

Natalie: They're not going to get over it until David gets what he deserves.

Dorian: You're displaying admirable devotion. But, John, I know how much you have suffered. I am just asking you to please be fair.

John: And I'm just a cop, lady. My understanding of fairness doesnít extend beyond catching criminals, trying to put them in jail.

Dorian: Have you never made a mistake? If David did do this horrific thing, if he really did shoot your father, it was when he was a boy -- yes, a very young and stupid boy who -- who was trying to prove something to someone, but he has suffered for it. It has haunted him all of these years. It has kept him from becoming the kind of man that he could've been.

John: Thatís very nice, but I'm not very big on excuses.

Dorian: We're not talking premeditated. This was an accident, and if David really was responsible, he has suffered for it. Please, detective, be fair to him. Donít let this be personal.

Natalie: Itís his father.

Dorian: Thank you for the reminder, Natalie. Do I need to remind you both there was -- there were extenuating circumstances --

John: All right, ok, I think we're done here. I think we're done here. David will have his day in court. I suggest you save your circumstances for a jury.

Dorian: Thank you for your time.

Natalie: Oh. Did she get to you?

John: No, not at all.

David: Seeing Dorian here the other day was like seeing an angel. Sheís not a saint, mind you, but of all the people I didnít expect to see --

Adriana: Do you still love her?

David: She still love me?

Adriana: You need to ask her that.

David: What about you? What do you think about me -- now?

Adriana: I love you. I love you very much, and I always will.

David: Why?

Adriana: So many reasons. And I want to believe the best in you, David. But a man died, and I know if you were responsible, you didnít mean it. It just happened, but he was a father and a husband, people loved him, too. And if it is your fault that he died, you need to face it. If you did that, I could still be proud of you again -- if that matters.

David: It does.

Adriana: Momís going to get you a great lawyer, and the rest is up to you.

Tess: Mama loves you so, so much.  I know, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. I just donít know to protect you. But you donít have to be afraid, sweetie. Because you have got a big family, and they all love you so much. And they're -- they're good people. They're just not me. Because I'm your mom. I know that now. And Nash is your dad, and heís never, ever going to leave you. I love you two so much. I love you more than my own life, and I want you to have everything, everything good. Thatís -- thatís why I have to go -- so you can have a life. But I canít promise that I'll be back, but I can promise that I'm going to try as hard as I can to get back to you. I promise. But you have to do me a favor. In case we donít see each other again, you -- when your daddy comes home, you have to make him feel how much I love him. And you have to let him know that I fought really, really hard, I fought as hard as I could. Ok? I fought as hard as I could.

Anne: You're going to do fine, Evangeline. You're a lot like me, and I can do anything anybody else does -- I just canít see myself doing it. And I'm going to kick your butt till you get it right. Sheís all yours.

Cristian: I didnít even knock.

Anne: I'm psychic. Ask her. I have a meeting. Sign up for those classes today, so your boyfriend can spend more time taking you nice places and less time getting you there?

Evangeline: Well, Cristian, she either is psychic or her hearing is amazing.

Cristian: This whole session was like that?

Evangeline: Yeah.

Cristian: Wow.

Evangeline: Yeah, sheís pretty scary, and -- and sheís inspiring.

Cristian: Yeah, I got that. So, you told her I was your boyfriend?

Evangeline: Oh -- no.

Cristian: Hmm. Maybe she is psychic.

Natalie: My train doesnít leave for a few hours, so if you still want me to go with you to your fatherís grave --

John: Yeah -- uh -- not today, though. Soon.

Natalie: Ok. Just let me know.

John: Ok.

Natalie: So I'll call you when I get to the hotel.

John: Thereís something I want to say to you -- about earlier, I didnít mean to shut you out. I'm sorry.

Natalie: I'm sorry, too. I shouldnít have badgered you. I mean, I've had my share of bad dreams.

John: So we're ok?

Natalie: Yeah, we're ok.

John: Yeah?

Natalie: Yes.

John: Thanks.

Thomas: Freeze! Freeze! Donít do this, kid. You got your whole life ahead of you. Look, itís Christmas. I got two boys waiting at home for me. Letís make this easy on both of us.

David: I'm sorry.

Nash: I'll come back to you, Tess, I promise.

Antonio: Tess? Jessica.

On the next "One Life to Live" --

Nash: I was waiting for you.

Claudia: Why?

Nash: So I could do this.

Jessica: Antonio, are you the father?

Bo: Margaret, say hello to Todd Manning.
