One Life to Live Transcript Friday 1/20/06

Evangeline: Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, your job is an easy one. And the reason it's so easy is because Mr. Hughes did not prove his case.
Hugh: Is that a fact?
Evangeline: I'm just getting warmed up.
Hugh: You're wasting your time. The jury's going to find Todd Manning guilty.
Evangeline: Is that a fact?
Hugh: Even his fiancée thinks he did it. And she's supposed to be in love with the guy.
Evangeline: Blair never said that Todd was guilty.
Hugh: She didn't have to. Did you see the look on her face when I asked her? The jury did, too.
Spencer: Bad time?
Blair: No, I just went out after the court and tried to drink somebody off my mind. I have a little bit of a hangover.
Spencer: Looks like more than a little, but lucky for you, I happen to be a doctor.
Asa: So, what happened on your date with Dorian? Did you get anything out of her?
Clint: Why do you ask? I thought the two of you were allies now.
Asa: Well, I'll tell you, being an ally doesn't mean I trust her. For all I know, she and Truman could be setting me up.
Clint: Yeah, I know that you think that Truman is after us. And maybe you're right.
Asa: There's no maybes about it, Clint.
Clint: Does this have anything to do with what happened to you on New Year's?
Asa: Nothing happened to me on New Year's Eve, except I had too much bourbon and not enough branch water.
Clint: Well, you told Bo and me that somebody broke in here.
Asa: Clint, I was three sheets to the wind.
Clint: Maybe that's why your story keeps on changing. Pa, what is it you're not telling me?
Nash: Sorry to barge in on you, but some guy named Nigel said I could find you here.
Asa: Clint, who the hell is this?
Clint: This might be the father of your next great-grandchild.
Jessica: It never gets any easier. Finding myself in a new place, a strange city. I don't know how I got there or why. It's frightening.
Viki: I know it is, sweetheart. It's as if you have absolutely no control over your own body.
Natalie: Hey, I'm just glad you're back and you're ok. You know, I should have known Tess was going to pull some stunt like that.
Natalie: I finally met her.
Jessica: Huh. A piece of work, isn't she?
Natalie: Well, she's got enough of you in her that she's not totally awful, but I didn't like it so much when I caught her in my wedding dress.
Jessica: She seriously did that?
Natalie: Yeah, right before she accused me of still being in love with Cristian.
Carlotta: Thanks for your help, Cristian. There's a big check waiting for you at the end of the week.
Cristian: I don't want your money, Mami, or Antonio's, so stop offering.
Carlotta: You -- you and your pride. You're just like your father. But I do wish there was something I could do for you.
Cristian: There is. Help me figure out a way to get Natalie back.
Asa: So you're the one.
Nash: Um -- "the one?"
Asa: Yeah, the one -- causing all the problems for poor Jessie.
Clint: This is my father. Pa, this is Nash Brennan.
Asa: Oh. Oh, the pleasure's all yours.
Clint: You'll have to excuse him. I think he left his manners outside with his boots.
Asa: Clint, you may find one of my boots where the sun don't shine. And I tell you something, boy, I don't take kindly to people causing problems for my family.
Clint: You know, we've got that conference call to Tokyo coming up. You might want to look at your notes.
Asa: Oh, yeah, Tokyo, notes. You got it. I'm going. Maybe old Brennan here might do us the same favor.
Nash: Love him, so far.
Clint: He circles the wagons when he feels that his family's threatened.
Nash: Yeah, well, I can't blame him. I mean, it's not every day that you meet your granddaughter's alter's boyfriend.
Clint: Oh. Glad you got a sense of humor about it.
Clint: Why don't you sit down for a minute. So, what brings you over here?
Nash: I -- I wanted to tell you myself what happened when I found Tess in New York yesterday.
Clint: Yeah, at that rehab clinic where Claudia Reston is.
Nash: Yeah, yeah. Claudia -- well, she dumped on her pretty bad, especially when she found out that she was pregnant. She had a lot to say about me, too, made me out to be some kind of a monster. And Tess got upset, and Jessica came out.
Clint: Yeah, I know. I heard about that, too.
Nash: You know, you know a lot more about this D.I.D. thing than I do. Is it possible that -- that Tess believed everything that Claudia was saying and then let Jessica come out just so she could get away from me?
Jessica: Natalie -- oh, I'm sorry. I am so sorry that Tess did that to your wedding dress.
Natalie: Oh, my gosh, it's ok. It's not like you did it.
Viki: You didn't, you know, sweetheart. When Tess is in control, you are in no way responsible for the things she does.
Natalie: And it doesn't matter, anyway. I donated my dress to charity.
Viki: You gave away your wedding dress?
Natalie: Yeah. So what? Cristian and I are divorced now.
Viki: Well, your father and I are divorced, but I still have the dress that I wore when I married him -- both of them, in fact.
Natalie: I always forget that the two of you got married twice.
Jessica: Yeah. Sometimes the first divorce doesn't always stick.
Viki: Especially when two people are still in love with each other.
Natalie: Ok, I'm going to tell you both what I told Tess. I am not in love with Cristian anymore. And no matter what he thinks, I don't think we're ever going to get back together.
Cristian: I'm getting Natalie back, no matter what I have to do.
Carlotta: Cristian, you can't make somebody love you. Love is a gift. It has to be given to you, the way I gave that gift to your father, and the way he gave it to me.
Cristian: A gift, huh?
Cristian: What do you do when the other person doesn't want it?
Carlotta: Well, then there's nothing you can do. But you can try again, though, the same way your father did with me.
Cristian: You turned my dad down?
Carlotta: Six times.
Cristian: Well, what made you change your mind?
Carlotta: Diego tricked me. He told me that his dog was dying and that he wanted me to take a look at him because he couldn't afford the vet.
Cristian: And so you did?
Carlotta: Yeah, he kept stalling and stalling, trying to charm me.
Cristian: And it worked, or I wouldn't be here.
Carlotta: The supposedly sick and dying dog came leaping out from the back and jumped on my lap, and that's when I knew what he was up to. But by then it was just too late. I was already falling for him. But I was glad that he didn't give up on me.
Cristian: I need your help, mom. I need you to tell Natalie that my dog is sick.
Carlotta: You don't have a dog.
Cristian: I know, but I have something better -- you.
Spencer: Here we go -- Dr. Truman's magical miracle hangover cure, patent pending.
Blair: Oh -- uh-uh-uh. Why does it always have to be green?
Spencer: That's that spirulina algae that's in it. It's the active ingredient. That's what makes it work.
Blair: Oh, no, that's nasty.
Spencer: No, look, you have to finish it.
Blair: That is so nasty. Ooh!
Spencer: Where did you go on this bender of yours exactly, anyway?
Blair: The usual. Rodi's. That's where Todd and I first fell in love. I tried to exorcise him from my system.
Spencer: Did it work?
Blair: I don't know if it'll ever work, but I can tell you this much -- we're over.
Spencer: Even if you still love him?
Blair: How could I be in love with a baby killer, Spencer?
Margaret: Todd is so desperate to see me. It says so right here in the --
Spencer: Are you sure you're clear on the plan, Margaret?
Margaret: Yes, crystal. But it still seems dangerous.
Spencer: It is. But no risk, no gain. Right, Peggy?
Evangeline: How are you doing? You hanging in there?
Todd: Is it too late to change my mind?
Evangeline: About what?
Todd: I think I want to plead guilty.
Clint: Just because Jessica has come back, that does not mean that Tess has given up on you.
Nash: Oh, but you didn't hear what Claudia had to say about me or see how Tess reacted.
Clint: Yeah, I know that. I -- I know what you're going through, though. You know, there are reasons why Viki's alters kept coming and going -- a lot of reasons, and all of them complicated.
Nash: So -- so you think there's still a chance Tess might come back?
Clint: If you're asking me if this is over -- no, not even close.
Nash: I'm so worried about Tess, you know? I wish I knew what was going on with her, but I just -- I don't think it's a good idea to go over to the house.
Clint: No, no, no. That would not be a good idea, but I'm on my way over there, and I'll let you know what's happening.
Nash: Thank you. And thank you, sir, not just for that, but also for not running me out of here.
Clint: Well, you don't need any more trouble, do you?
Nash: No, I do not. I have troubles up to the eyeballs right now . My winery is falling apart. I had to let go of my apartment in New York, and now I got this crazy landlady who's busting my butt over rent.
Clint: You're staying at Roxy's hotel, aren't you?
Nash: Yeah. Well, not for long. She's going to kick me out soon.
Clint: Yeah? Well, can you blame her?
Nash: No, I got no money. It's all invested in Napa.
Clint: Oh. Well, why don't you move in here?
Natalie: So we were talking about you, Jess. Not me, not John, not Cristian.
Jessica: I don't know where to start with me.
Viki: Well, you said that you were beginning to become much more aware of things when Tess is in control.
Jessica: It started when I was getting the amnio.
Jessica: And then I remember her being at the hospital, and I tried to stop her from destroying the sample, but she did it, anyway. Now I don't know what to do.
Natalie: Well, why don't you just take the test again?
Jessica: It's too risky, Natalie. We're just going to have to wait and see who the father is -- and the mother.
Viki: Sweetheart, either way, you are the mother, no matter who the father is.
Jessica: I love this baby so much.
Viki: Oh, I know you do. I know.
Natalie: Oh, hi, Carlotta. How are you?
Carlotta: Not too good. Um -- I feel like I'm coming down with something. The diner is swamped. I -- I hate to ask you, and I wouldn't if I wasn't shorthanded, but I --
Natalie: You don't even have to ask. I'll be right there.
Carlotta: Thank you so much, my dear.
Natalie: Hey, guys, I hope you don't mind, but Carlotta just called me, and she's not feeling well, so she needs some help at the diner. I'm going to go.
Viki: Go, absolutely. Tell her I hope she feels better.
Natalie: I will.
Viki: Bye, babe.
Natalie: Bye. And, hey, hang in there, ok? It won't be too much longer.
Viki: She's right, sweetheart. You know, I know it seems like an eternity before you find out who the father is, but the time will pass quickly.
Jessica: You know, even if I do get integrated and Tess is out of my life, what am I going to do about Nash if he's the father?
Nash: You're inviting me to stay here?
Clint: Well, why not? You could do a whole lot worse.
Nash: I've been doing a whole lot worse. Nice place. But honestly, look, I -- I wasn't fishing for an invite. I --
Clint: Yeah, I know that. And I also know what you're going through, and if there's anything I can do to make it a little bit easier, I will.
Nash: It's a kind offer, sir, but I -- I really think --
Clint: Hey, look, if this is a pride thing, get over it. We've got too much of that around here as it is.
Nash: Well, then you don't need any more of it.
Clint: No. Son, you can't keep doing what you're doing. You need a little help, ok? So why don't you get your things together, and I'll go check up on Jessica.
Nash: Thank you, sir.
Spencer: It must be difficult loving someone who could commit such a heinous crime.
Blair: It's not difficult. It's impossible.
Spencer: I understand. More than you think. If you just stick to the plan, everything will be fine.
Margaret: Well, are you absolutely sure? Because if there was anything that was going to happen to me or to Todd Jr. --
Spencer: There is absolutely nothing to worry about. We are both going to get what we want out of this, trust me.
Margaret: It's time to go see daddy at the lake, sweetheart. Oh.
Blair: Well, I think the green stuff actually is making me feel better.
Spencer: Well, that's why I make the big bucks.
Spencer: Hey, is that a smile -- a partial smile? I guess it does work, doesn't it?
Blair: I think it takes a little magic these days to make me smile.
Spencer: Did you happen to see the paper this morning?
Blair: I made a conscious effort not to look.
Spencer: Because I thought you wanted me to --
Blair: Yeah, I did. I wanted you to stick around and report to me.
Spencer: But I won't if you don't want me to.
Blair: No, you know what? I -- i don't want you to, but I know that I should for my kids.
Spencer: Well, Todd testified that he was out on the lake in the boat with Margaret, and she jumped overboard. He dove in to try to save her, but was unable to, and --
Blair: Same story he told me.
Spencer: You think there's any truth to it, or is it just a story?
Blair: Margaret was strangled. And I know he paid off that creep, Denton, to keep the truth from coming out -- which means that he did it. He strangled Margaret and he threw her body into that cold, dark lake. How could he do something like that? How could he kill his own baby? And how could I have believed him for so long? Well, you must think that I'm a complete idiot.
Spencer: No, no, no.
Spencer: I think you're a very loving, very caring woman. And I, for one, happen to find that very endearing.
Evangeline: Where is this coming from, Todd? Why would you want to plead guilty all of a sudden?
Todd: I had this dream last night. And they had me in the electric chair. And I was just sitting there. You know, I was just -- I was sitting strapped into the thing, and I was just waiting for them to pull the switch on me. And I knew it was all over, I knew my life was over. And I thought what can I do? I have a minute -- I have a minute left in my life, and I thought, what can I do to make that minute worthwhile? I can't do anything. I can't do anything. There's nothing I can do.
Evangeline: Ok, ok. Ok. Todd -- Todd, you know I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that doesn't happen, right? Ok.
Todd: Can you guarantee it? I think I -- I think I want to take the deal that Hughes made. I think that -- I think I'll take life. I'll take life.
Evangeline: Todd, I can talk to Hugh, you know? I can see if the offer still stands. But I'm telling you, if we do this, that's it. There is no going back. You will never see Blair -- not on the outside, anyway.
Todd: She doesn't seem to want to have anything to do with me, anyway.
Evangeline: Ok, you're never going to see your kids again, either, Todd. You will spend the rest of your life in prison. That's the best case scenario. And your kids are going to spend the rest of their lives believing that you killed that baby. Is that what you want?
Todd: But I'm innocent. I'm going to stick to that.
Evangeline: Are you sure?
Todd: No. But I'm telling the truth. For once in my life, I'm telling the truth. Even if Blair doesn't believe me.
Bailiff: All rise. Superior Court of Llantano County is now in session. Judge Terrance Mc Clellan presiding.
Judge: You may be seated.
Evangeline: What's wrong?
Todd: Oh, I didn't think that Blair would be here, but I thought Viki would be for sure.
Viki: You know, my guess is that Tess is frightened that the baby is not Nash's, and that's why she destroyed the sample. Or she knows something that we don't know.
Jessica: Mom, thanks for trying. But knowing Tess, she was probably just angry at Nash, and she panicked over losing him.
Viki: Either way, there's nothing you can do about it.
Jessica: But wait. Wait to find out who this baby belongs to.
Viki: Honey, the baby belongs to you. And hopefully, you will be integrated by then.
Jessica: I'm working so hard with Dr. Jamison, and it feels like I'm getting better, but the second I get close to remembering something, it just goes away.
Viki: You are getting closer, ok? You've said it yourself. Because things are starting to change. You are becoming much more aware of what's going on when Tess is in control.
Jessica: I just want this to be over. I want it to be over. I want this baby to be mine and Antonio's, and I want Nash and Tess out of my life forever.
[Knock on door]
Clint: Hello. Oh, sure does smell good in here. Hope you made some for me.
Viki: Good morning.
Clint: Good morning.
Viki: You'll have to excuse me. I'm going to run to the courthouse. I don't want Todd to think I've forgotten him, ok, baby? Goodbye.
Jessica: Wish him luck for me.
Viki: Yes, I will do that. I think today he's going to need about as much luck as he can have.
Cristian: Sorry, guys, but we're closing, so you got to go. Sorry. Sorry, you got to go now, please. Thank you very much. Let's go.
Denton: No, what are you doing? It's not even 12:00 yet.
Cristian: Yeah, it's a private party.
Denton: Let me get my paper.
Cristian: Really, we got to go.
Denton: Hey, hey -- I don't like this. I'm going to call my attorney.
Cristian: Have a good day.
Cristian: Bye-bye. Guy's a nut. All right, mom. So, you can head out, too. Go home, put your feet up, and enjoy the rest of the day.
Carlotta: I feel terrible about lying to Natalie.
Cristian: Yeah, well, you won't feel so bad if it's what gets us back together.
Carlotta: I don't know what you're up to, but good luck, Mijo.
Cristian: Whew. Ok.
Natalie: Hey. Where's your mother?
Cristian: Natalie, hey. She went home.
Natalie: Um -- I guess everybody else did, too? What the hell's going on here?
Denton: Don't worry. I'll be there. Late.
Judge: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. We're here to begin final arguments, starting with the prosecution. Mr. Hughes?
Hugh: Thank you, your honor.
Hugh: Good morning. Margaret couldn't be here today. Margaret Cochran cannot be here to tell you what happened that night of September 19. And her son, Todd Jr., will never be born. But the evidence that has been gathered tells us the story of what really happened that night. You have heard testimony from both expert and character witnesses, some people who know Todd Manning, many people o never even met him. Some who possibly had an ax to grind, but most with no interest in harming the defendant at all. But every bit of that testimony leads to the same conclusion. Todd Manning murdered Margaret Cochran and his unborn son. So the D.N.A. linked manning not just to the paternity of the baby, but also to evidence found at the lake by Commissioner Bo Buchanan and Lieutenant John Mc Bain. Now, the medical examiner testified that Margaret Cochran died by strangulation, most likely at the hands of a strong man. Mr. Manning's story about Margaret jumping into the lake and drowning is merely the fabrication of a desperate and guilty man trying to save his own life. Noted physician Dr. Spencer Truman testified that he treated Todd Manning previously for a stab wound -- a stab wound inflicted by Margaret Cochran when manning attempted to kill her once before. Victoria Davidson, sister of the defendant, is one of the most respected names in this community. She stood up for her brother on countless occasions. She even tried to here in this courtroom. But there is no defense for what her brother has done. Ladies and gentlemen, Todd Manning was in a desperate situation. Some of you may understand him. Some of you may even sympathize with him. But you know that what he did was wrong, and not just morally -- legally. He had the means, the motive, and the opportunity to commit these murders, so he did! When Todd Manning wrapped his hands around Margaret Cochran's throat and choked the life out of her, he knew she was pregnant. This was not done in the heat of the moment. The defendant meticulously plotted and executed the murder of his own flesh and blood! He knew he was killing an innocent baby! No matter what you might think of Ms. Cochran, that baby did not deserve to die. It is now your responsibility to see that justice is served and make sure Todd Manning is found guilty as charged. Thank you.
Asa: I want you to find this woman.
Man: She's -- she's really beautiful. Who is she?
Asa: Never mind that. You just find her. Now, here's everything you need. Copy that photo, and I'll keep this myself.
Man: Anything else?
Asa: Uh -- yeah. I -- I had a funny thing happen to me at the lodge New Year's Eve. Somehow, I was -- I was knocked out. When I came to, I found this picture. Now, I want to know who left it and why.
Man: I'll get right on it.
Blair: I -- I appreciate you helping me with my hangover. But I better get my act together for when my kids get home.
Spencer: Yeah, I got to go, too. Listen -- this will be over soon, Blair. It will. No matter what happens, whatever the outcome in court, it'll all be over, and you'll be able to move on with the rest of your life. Hang in there.
Blair: What is my life without Todd?
Evangeline: Mr. Hughes did not prove Todd Manning guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. And so according to the law, you must find him not guilty. Mr. Hughes did his best. He did do his best to confuse you with a lot of circumstantial evidence, but that's all it is. He presented absolutely no concrete proof, not one single shred of evidence that directly links Todd Manning to this crime. Todd Manning is innocent. He is an innocent man, and he is defined only by his love for his family. And his life is in your hands. It is up to you to make sure that he is not punished for crimes he did not commit. It is up to you to see that justice is served. And it is up to you to end this nightmare that he and his family have suffered. Thank you.
Natalie: Your mom said she wasn't feeling well and that she needed my help at the diner because the place was packed!
Cristian: She lied.
Cristian: Because I asked her to. So don't blame her, blame me.
Cristian: Whoa. Well, where are you going?
Natalie: Why should I stay?
Cristian: A cup of coffee? I just made a fresh pot just for you.
Natalie: Your coffee sucks.
Cristian: Not if you put a lot of cream and sugar in it.
Natalie: And then what?
Cristian: We talk.
Natalie: Cristian, this isn't going to work.
Cristian: 15 minutes, no tricks, no strings. Once the coffee's done, you could walk out that door and go right back to hating me. Whatever's happened with us, huh, we loved each other, we were married. Can you give me one cup of coffee?
Natalie: Start pouring.
Jessica: 21! Whoo-hoo!
Clint: Ah, how many is that now, Jess?
Jessica: Well, you're a good teacher.
Clint: Yeah, even though your mother never, ever approved.
Jessica: Well, I was 8.
Clint: Well, it taught you how to add, didn't it?
Jessica: It sure did.
Clint: Educational tools. Oh -- I should tell you that, earlier this morning, Nash stopped over at Asa's.
Clint: Well, he was worried about you.
Jessica: No, he was worried about Tess.
Clint: I think he's worried about the both of you. And he needed somebody to talk to.
Jessica: Dad, Antonio is my boyfriend. You should be on his side.
Clint: Honey, I'm not on anybody's side.
[Clint knocks on table]
Clint: Hit me.
Jessica: Well, maybe he's just using you like he did Claudia Reston.
Clint: I think he's genuinely sorry about that.
Jessica: Gosh, dad. If you like him so much, why don't you live with him?
Clint: Well, since you brought it up, I offered Nash a place to stay.
Asa: What the hell are you still doing here?
Nash: Well, your son, Mr. Buchanan -- Jessica's dad -- said that I could stay here just for a couple of days.
Asa: Clint had no right to do that. This is my house, not his.
Nash: Well, maybe you should have a talk with him.
Asa: Ah, hell, I guess he wants you to stay here, keep an eye on you. Well, that's his problem. But if you got anything in your head, like a brain, you will steer clear of me.
Nash: Yes, sir.
Natalie: Never seen these cups before.
Cristian: They're new. Sorry. I didn't leave enough room for the cream. You just have to wait a few more minutes for it to cool.
Natalie: Well, it's ok. It's your 15 minutes.
Cristian: Are you hungry? Do you want a pastelito? Remember when you tried to make those when you put together that Puerto Rican dinner for my mom, trying to impress my mom?
Natalie: Yeah, I remember.
Cristian: And how we danced that night up on the roof?
Natalie: Hmm. I had no idea what I was doing.
Cristian: Hey, you learned in time for the wedding. That's what's important. I didn't think you'd make it, though. And every time I tried to teach you, well, we ended up --
Natalie: We are not going there, ok?
Cristian: What? I was going to say watching that ballroom video. What'd you think I was going to say?
Todd: I tell you, you sure know how to work a jury. You had them right where you want them.
Evangeline: Yeah. Well, Hugh was good, too. It could go either way. And Blair not being here doesn't help.
Blair: Why did you just tell Denton that you murdered Margaret Cochran?
Todd: I'm not in this mess by accident. I was set up. I'm sure of it.
Denton: It's you.
Spencer: Yeah. It's me.
Spencer: My thanks for a job well done.
Cristian: How long were we lost that day?
Natalie: Hmm. I don't know, but I didn't think we were going to make it home because you wouldn't ask for directions.
Cristian: Hey, it wasn't a total waste. We would've missed that meteor shower.
Natalie: Yeah. That was the most amazing thing I've ever seen.
Cristian: Not me.
Natalie: Well -- it's all gone, so I -- I'm going.
Cristian: We should do this again sometime.
Natalie: I don't think so.
Cristian: Ok, well, if you change your mind, uh --
Natalie: I won't.
Denton: It was cake making Blair Cramer, that delicious piece --
Spencer: Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Denton: Anyway, it was easy making her think that Todd Manning copped to killing the Cochran broad. I almost feel guilty taking this -- almost.
Spencer: You just remember -- not a word about this.
Denton: Whatever you say,
Denton: Whatever you say, boss. I'm just curious, though -- what's in it for you?
Spencer: Let's just say I have a vested interest in taking Todd Manning out of the equation.
TV announcer: Closing arguments have concluded in the Todd Manning case. His fate is now in the hands of the jury.
Judge: Take Mr. Manning back to his cell. This court's adjourned.
[Judge pounds gavel]
Bailiff: All rise.
Todd: So what do we do now?
Evangeline: Well, there's nothing we can do but wait.
On the next "One Life to Live" --
Evangeline: Now that I've seen you with Natalie, I'm starting to wonder if you're capable of loving anybody.
Spencer: I will still be here for you. That hasn't changed.
Todd: I don't care what that jury says about me. I'm going to come home to you.
Bo: The verdict's in.
Viki: I think everything is about to change, isn't it?
